SINO Johnson the johnson

Unread post by Vrede too »

Asshole, the first and defining title.

Who is Mike Johnson, the new speaker of the House?
A crash course on the Republican Louisiana legislator who is now third in line to the presidency.

 If Joe goes down Kamala will have to get a new VP installed in record time, just to be safe.
... Johnson, the new speaker of the House, is a product of conservative evangelicalism and Deep South Republican political culture....

Johnson got a law degree at Louisiana State University
 One more reason for billy.pilgrim to despise him.
and spent nearly two decades working mostly for conservative legal groups who focused on issues of importance to religious conservatives....

Johnson argued in favor of a ban on same-sex marriage before the Louisiana Supreme Court and has continued to advocate for those views as a legislator.

In his inaugural podcast with his wife, Johnson referred to himself and those like him as “righteous,” as he quoted from Psalm 11: “If the foundations be destroyed, what will the righteous do?”

“That is not a rhetorical question anymore,” Johnson said. “It's something we have to ask ourselves and we have to answer.”
:puke-left: :puke-left: :puke-left:
... He faces skepticism due to his inexperience and his role in spreading lies about the 2020 election and his role in the attempt to throw out the votes of millions of Americans to keep former President Donald Trump in power.

“Apparently experience isn’t necessary for the speaker job,” Sen. Mitt Romney, a Utah Republican, told reporters. “We’re down to folks who haven’t had leadership or chairmanship role, which means their administration of the House will be a new experience for them.”
Election denial was the only qualification.
... Johnson was able to ascend to the speakership because “he has the fewest enemies,” said Rep. Ken Buck, a Colorado Republican, on CNN.
 That's the tragic and shameful state of the vision-less GQP. :(
The reality was always that whoever was named the next speaker would have to negotiate with a Democratic Senate and a White House occupied by a Democratic president.
:laughing-rolling: That will stick in his “righteous" craw.
... Johnson has a honeymoon period now, but if he hopes to be a successful speaker, his collision with the demands of hardliners in his own party will soon be on the horizon.

New House Speaker Mike Johnson Wants Women to Pop Out 'Able-Bodied Workers' to Fund Social Security

... Alas, this is the man who will be presiding over the House moving forward as the threat of another government shutdown looms. This is the man who will be relied on to forge the bipartisan agreements necessary to pass a budget and keep the wheels of our government in motion. You’ll have to excuse me if I’m not feeling overly optimistic about things right now.

Oh good lord.

Who is Mike Johnson, the new speaker of the House?

In the spring of 2022, Rep. Mike Johnson started a podcast with his wife, Kelly Johnson, who calls herself a “pastoral counselor.”

Dems Turn Mike Johnson's First Viral Moment Into Anti-GOP Ad
'NEXT QUESTION'
Democrats are testing whether a moment when Republicans shouted down a reporter for asking about Mike Johnson's efforts to overturn the election will have a political impact.

When House Republicans held an impromptu press conference late Tuesday night to celebrate coalescing around their new speaker nominee, they were in no mood to answer tough questions—or even the obvious one.

So when ABC reporter Rachel Scott asked Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA)—the speaker nominee who has now been elevated to the speakership—about his leading efforts to overturn the 2020 election, Republicans were having none of it.

They drowned out the reporter with boos. Johnson said “next question.” And Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) told the reporter to “shut up!”

Now, a D.C.-based advocacy group, Courage For America, is seizing on the moment to attack Republicans and quickly define the new speaker.

The non-profit group is launching an ad series Wednesday night targeting New York Republicans with the viral moment....

Jimmy Kimmel Nails Exactly What’s Wrong With New House Speaker Mike Johnson
The late-night host zeroed in on why Mike Johnson isn’t even the best Mike Johnson.

... Johnson, he noted, backed Donald Trump’s plot to overturn the 2020 election results and remain in power despite losing.

“Also anti-gay, anti-choice, pro-conspiracy theory, he seems terrific,” Kimmel snarked. “Not only is he not the best choice for speaker, you can’t even definitively say Mike Johnson is the best Mike Johnson they could’ve chosen.”

Kimmel then ticked off a list of better Mike Johnsons, from chefs to athletes to yodelers.

“You could go to the middle of the phone book and pick any of the hundreds of Mike Johnsons. Each one would be a better choice for speaker because not one of them tried to overthrow the presidential election,” Kimmel declared....

I wonder if the Dems are re-thinking their "stay out of it" strategy yet. They could have (a) kept McCarthy and extracted concessions; (b) put in Emmer and extracted concessions or (c) get stuck with a class A loon and get nothing.

SINO McCarthy proved to be too weak to resist anything the other loons demanded and Emmer gave us no reason to believe that he would be any different. Plus, neither McCarthy nor Emmer asked for Dem support. McCarthy just whined about not getting it after the fact. With an eye to the rapidly approaching 2024 elections, why not have the looniest as a posterboy? Anyhow, the Dems had no choice once GoCubsGo and I weighed in ;)

It's incredible that an absolute nutjob can be elected speaker, the more we learn the nuttier he becomes. As the nation knew nothing about him I wonder what the semi sane Republicans in the House that voted for him knew at the time.

He's a dream to run against in the 2024 cycle, the ads are being written already.

He won't be able to advance his agenda beyond the house, but damage can be done by what he won't do, such as a budget, aid to Ukraine etc. in the name of his causes.

Fortunately (thx McCarthy? ) the debt ceiling is covered until 2025.

Not his nomination so much but the fact that the "fatigued" Republican congresscritters folded like a cheap suit without a cheep.

I gave them too much credit.
