When 10000 barrels of crude oil roll down your street

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Or don't roll into your province...

Latest right-wing Premier passes his promised "turn off the tap" bill. BC sues.
Alberta has threatened to squeeze energy sources going into BC until/unless BC stops fighting the pipelines. Alberta seems to want to be OPEC of the North.

And they could have done something about the BP oil spill, or the bigger one that is still leaking, but didn't. Thanks lil bush for the bs permit and saving the Gulf walruses, thanks Obama for letting BP be the only ones to measure the oil and for allowing them to illegally sink the oil where it will stay until disturbed.

Blame Canada:
The company behind the Kentucky explosion is also behind the worst inland pipeline accident in US history

A gas pipeline explosion in rural Kentucky early Thursday killed one person and sent five others to the hospital. The blaze also set homes on fire and destroyed railroad tracks.

The pipeline is owned by Enbridge, a Canadian multinational company whose fuel networks crisscross all over the United States and Canada....

The explosion in Kentucky is not the first Enbridge incident this year. In January, an Enbridge natural gas pipeline on the same system exploded in Ohio, igniting a fireball that injured two people and damaged homes. In November 2018, a ruptured Enbridge natural gas pipeline ignited a fire that evacuated part of a First Nations territory in British Columbia, Canada.

But Enbridge also moves liquid fuel, and has been behind some of the biggest pipeline accidents in US history, including the catastrophic Kalamazoo River spill. In 2010, an Enbridge pipeline burst, spilling roughly 1 million gallons of thick, sticky Alberta tar sands crude oil into the river ecosystem near Kalamazoo, Michigan. Tar sands crude oil is nothing like its conventional crude oil counterpart; it is thicker and heavier, and must be diluted with a cocktail of chemicals that often include benzene and other carcinogens in order to flow through pipelines. That spill took years and more than a billion dollars to clean up, making it the largest and most expensive inland oil spill in US history.

In 2012, an Enbridge line spilled more than 50,000 gallons of crude oil in Wisconsin, which required 17,000 tons of contaminated soil to be removed. The same year, an Enbridge line spilled and more than 58,000 gallons in Alberta, Canada.

A report published by the environmental group Greenpeace found that between 2002 and 2018, Enbridge averaged a rate of one hazardous liquid pipeline accident every 20 days, for a total of 307 spills and 2.8 million gallons released into the environment. Thirty of those incidents reportedly contaminated water resources, including 17 incidents that were reported to contaminate groundwater....

There are more than 2.7 million miles of pipeline for oil, natural gas, and other chemical transport snaked across the US. The US currently employs roughly one federal pipeline inspector for every 5,000 miles of pipeline.
Funny, we have "Three Strikes Laws" which put mostly Black men behind bar for life, but when it comes to a more destructive and deadly pipeline company . . .

BC has been fighting for year to keep them away, and unfortunately it looks like it's a losing battle.

It doesn't help that the newly elected Alberta Premier is a Trump-type right winger whose policy is to "turn off the tap" of oil to BC if he can't run his pipeline through. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton ... -1.5118039

Legally, perhaps, but don't underestimate the power of both resistant bureaucracy and citizen action, especially when they can claim the backing of the people of BC, at least as represented by its government and probably also in fact.

Email from Stand.earth, thought you'd be interested:
This time, the oil industry and pro-oil politicians have taken things way too far.

For the past couple of months, I’ve been facing an onslaught of vitriol and online attacks, all thanks to Trump-style politics north of the border. The attacks are designed to intimidate and deter the Stand.earth team from our climate advocacy — in particular our campaign against the controversial Trans Mountain tar sands pipeline.

With your continued support, we can make sure this dirty and dangerous tar sands pipeline never gets built....

But let me back up a bit, and explain the roots of this complicated Orwellian drama.

Earlier this spring, Alberta – the home to Canada’s tar sands industry – elected a far-right, pro-oil politician to lead the province, Jason Kenney. Just a few weeks after getting elected, the new Premier Kenney stood onstage in front of a crowd of supporters and announced a $30 million ‘war room’ to attack environmental groups from speaking out about the climate impacts of oil and gas development.

Before giving his speech, he was introduced by a pro-oil industry advocate who held up my face on a giant poster, labelling me an “enemy of the oil sands.” In the weeks since then, I’ve received death threats and sexist, violent attacks on social media.

Image

Why? Because I, along with the rest of the team at Stand.earth, say out loud what even industry insiders will admit: we need to stop *all* new fossil fuel production if we want a chance at keeping the planet below a dangerous level of warming.

Let’s get one thing clear: these vicious Trump-style attacks are no more than a distraction, intended to pull us away from our important work stopping the Trans Mountain pipeline and preserving a liveable climate.

We have no intention of letting these ridiculous tactics slow us down – but we need your help....

The Canadian government thinks Trans Mountain construction will start in just a few weeks' time – but we know better. Our team at Stand.earth, working together with amazing allies, is ready to spring into action to delay construction, organize mass mobilizations and keep this project in headlines across North America.

I know we can stop this pipeline.

However, we’re up against the Canadian government, wealthy oil companies, and the $30 million war room that Alberta Premier Kenney is creating to intimidate us from speaking out, so we need to ramp up even more. We need to be ready to respond to anything and everything they throw at us....

As part of the Stand.earth community, you’ve already played a huge role in delaying construction for years — construction that could restart as soon as September. You’ve stood with us before, and we hope you’ll stand with us again as we enter the next phase in the fight to stop dirty oil expansion.

Thank you,

Tzeporah Berman

Keystone dumped 383,000 gallons in North Dakota wetlands. I didn't know North Dakota had wetlands, but apparently so.

Second Keystone spill in two years.

Jordan Cove Energy Project

The Jordan Cove Energy Project is a proposal by Calgary-based energy company Pembina to build a liquefied natural gas export terminal within the International Port of Coos Bay, Oregon. The natural gas would be transported to the terminal by the Pacific Connector Gas Pipeline.

Support and opposition

The Jordan Cove LNG project has been long opposed by impacted communities, including landowners, Tribes, commercial fishermen, and more across Southern Oregon for over a decade. In 2018, a poll found 57 percent either strongly opposed or leaned toward opposing the Jordan Cove Energy Project, versus 22 percent who either leaned toward supporting or strongly supported the project.

US Senator Jeff Merkley and US Representative Peter Defazio publicly oppose this project.

Pembina Pipeline was the sole source of funding for a unit of the North Bend police department, and trained them to wage propaganda battle against protesters.

Dakota access pipeline: court strikes down permits in victory for Standing Rock Sioux

... In his ruling on Tuesday, the federal judge James Boasberg, an Obama appointee, said the environmental analysis by both the companies behind the pipeline and the corps was severely lacking.

The abysmal safety record of the pipeline parent company, Sunoco, “does not inspire confidence”, he added.

The court-mandated EIS will be more in depth than the assessment already completed by the corps – and could take years. The court will next decide if the pipeline should be shut down until the EIS is done....
