The Cinema Thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Speaking of chrisofascists, this looks important and well made:
God & Country is a 2024 American documentary film directed by Dan Partland and produced by Rob Reiner. The film discusses the emergence of Christian nationalism and its close relationship with far-right politics in the United States, exploring its perceived threat to democracy and the politicization of Christianity. The documentary is partly inspired by Katherine Stewart's book The Power Worshippers (2019). It is distributed by Oscilloscope Laboratories. The film was released on February 16, 2024.

That has to be organized crybaby xtians spamming the site. All the more reason to see the doc.

Shame on me for waiting so long to watch this:
Invictus is a 2009 biographical sports film directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon, making it the third collaboration between Eastwood and Freeman after Unforgiven (1992) and Million Dollar Baby (2004). The story is based on the 2008 John Carlin book Playing the Enemy: Nelson Mandela and the Game That Made a Nation about the events in South Africa before and during the 1995 Rugby World Cup. The Springboks were not expected to perform well, the team having only recently returned to high-level international competition following the dismantling of apartheid—the country was hosting the World Cup, thus earning an automatic entry. Freeman portrays South African President Nelson Mandela while Damon played Francois Pienaar, the captain of the Springboks, the South Africa rugby union team....
Tomatometer 76%, Audience Score 75%
IMO: 3/5 as a sports movie, 5/5 as a political history drama.

A Simple Favor (2018 film)

A Simple Favor is a 2018 American black comedy crime thriller film directed by Paul Feig from a screenplay by Jessica Sharzer, based on the 2017 novel of the same name by Darcey Bell. The film stars Anna Kendrick, Blake Lively, Henry Golding, Andrew Rannells, Linda Cardellini, Rupert Friend, and Jean Smart and follows a small town vlogger who tries to solve the disappearance of her mysterious and elegant friend.

A Simple Favor was released in the United States on September 14, 2018 by Lionsgate. Critics praised the plot twists, and the performances of Kendrick, Lively and Golding. The film grossed $97 million worldwide on a $20 million budget....

Critical response

On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 85% based on 236 reviews, with an average rating of 6.98/10. The site's critical consensus reads, "Twisty, twisted, and above all simply fun, A Simple Favor casts a stylish mommy noir spell strengthened by potent performances from Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively." On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 67 out of 100, based on 40 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews". Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "B+" on an A+ to F scale, while PostTrak reported filmgoers gave it a 76% positive score.

Amy Nicholson of Variety magazine wrote: "The film feels a lot like the Serge Gainsbourg number that Stephanie dances to in the kitchen: jazzy, a little sleazy, and worth a cult following."

I watched this segment live, not the entire show. I wasn't sure if this "review" was real or if it was entirely a Kimmel bit, but leaned towards the former.

:laughing-rolling: either way, but it is real. Articles:
Donald Trump roasted Jimmy Kimmel on social media during the Oscars. Then the host read it on air.
WATCH: Jimmy Kimmel Fires Back at Donald Trump After Harsh Oscars Review — 'Isn't It Past Your Jail Time?'

Perfect. They don't call him Dolt .45 for nothing.
Donald J. Trump
@realDonaldTrump

Has there EVER been a WORSE HOST than Jimmy Kimmel at The Oscars. His opening was that of a less than average person trying too hard to be something which he is not, and never can be. Get rid of Kimmel and perhaps replace him with another washed up, but cheap, ABC “talent,” George Slopanopoulos. He would make everybody on stage look bigger, stronger, and more glamorous. Also a really bad politically correct show tonight, and for years - Disjointed, boring, and very unfair. Why don’t they just give the Oscars to those that deserve them. Maybe that way their audience and TV ratings will come back from the depths. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

"give the Oscars to those that deserve them." Sounds like a White supremacist dog whistle to me. What do you think?

Payson High invites Kevin Bacon for ‘one last dance’ in celebration of “Footloose” 40th anniversary

On Feb. 17, 1984, Payson, Utah started dancing again.

This weekend the now-iconic 80s classic, “Footloose,” starring Kevin Bacon, will be celebrating its 40th anniversary. Though Bacon wasn’t the only star of the show. Payson High School set the scene for the movie, cementing its history not only in Utah but in Hollywood as well.

To celebrate, students and faculty at Payson High have been working so hard and punching their cards to eventually cut loose and kick off their Sunday shoes.

It’s been a Footloose kind of year at Payson High with events, dances, and even assignments centered around the 80s film. While the events have been a fun celebration of the movie, they hope to cap it all off with Kevin Bacon’s return to the famous high school for one last dance at prom on April 20 before the school is torn down and rebuilt....

The school’s social media team has posted several fun videos and photos with the hashtag #BacontoPayson using a cardboard cutout of Kevin Bacon enjoying life in the Utah County city. One English teacher created an assignment for her argumentative unit for students to write letters trying to convince Bacon to come back and the drama department reproduced the Footloose Musical to great success....

The school has been working with Kevin Bacon’s humanitarian foundation, Six Degrees, which the actor is very actively involved in. To celebrate the movie’s anniversary the organization has set a goal to build 40,000 essential resource kits. Payson High and Six Degrees will be teaming up on the day of the prom to build 5,000 of those kits, all of which will be donated to local charities selected by the Payson High student body....
I was just watching Today do a long segment on the #BacontoPayson campaign, capped off by Kevin Bacon facetiming live that he is indeed coming to prom in a month!!! "Let's dance," he said.

 It was.

I didn't look at the comments
What about Shawshank Redemption, Schindler's List, or Dances With Wolves? All fantastic movies.
Agreed x 3!
Fascinating list. You missed a few-

Se7en
The Usual Suspects
Heat
Unforgiven
Braveheart
Schindler's List
Fargo
Saving Private Ryan
The Insider
Pulp Fiction
Crimson Tide
The Hunt for Red October

and for a less obvious one-

ill call it proof of just how many better movies than half of this list were made in the 90s.
I've seen all of those and agree they're great. I won't get into whether better than the article's list or not.

12 Monkeys
Thelma & Louise. And I remember the audible gasp in the theater when Brad Pitt hit the screen. Geena Davis was gorgeous but Brad was prettier 😆
There's one movie that shouldn't be on the list, because we don't talk about it...
Looks like Mel Gibson is still being shunned and for good reason as well, that said, Braveheart probably belongs on the list.
Great movie. Asshole.

Scent of a Woman
Die Hard 2 & 3
From Dusk to Dawn
Casino
Heat
Enemy of the State
Terminator 2
American Beauty
A Few Good Men
Jerry Maguire
How is it the "Big Lebowski" did not make the list!!! Every scene had a quotable moment - This aggression will not stand!
:D

The Fifth Element
Starship Troopers
Saving Private Ryan
The Full Monty
The Green Mile
True Lies

Okay, enough Comments reading for me. 90s cinema rocked!
