Da Vinci, Science, and Religion...

Unread post by Ulysses » Thu Mar 26, 2020 4:18 pm

Ran across this passage the other day. It was part of a Da Vinci biography, in a section about his groundbreaking scientific documentation of human fetuses.
"He began scientifically by arguing that the embryo does not breathe in the womb because it is surrounded by fluids. "If it breathed it would drown,"he explained, "and breathing is not necessary because it is nourished by the life and food of the mother." Then he added some thoughts that the Church, which believed that individual human life begins at conception, would have considered heretical. The embryo is still as much a part of the mother as her hands and feet are. "One and the same soul governs these two bodies," he added, "and on and the same soul nourishes both".
Had his drawings and writing on this been published in his lifetime, Da Vinci could have been burned at the stake for heresy.

we should immediately destroy all of his works and all historical reference to him. it will be as he never existed.

Da Vinci went even further, hinting that he believed that the earth orbits around the sun, scribbling on one of his many papers, "The sun does not move"... The same truth that got Galileo into so much trouble with the Inquisition a century or so later.
