This Black Family Ran a Thriving Beach Resort 100 Years Ago. They Want Their Land Back.

... Maybe the county or state have ways to penalize Manhattan Beach if it doesn't do the right thing.
Black descendants of Bruce's Beach owner could get Manhattan Beach land back under plan

The descendants of a Black family that once owned a thriving oceanfront resort in Manhattan Beach could get the property back under state legislation announced Friday.

Backers of the proposal, which will be introduced by state Sen. Steven Bradford (D-Gardena) on Monday, say it is the first step toward correcting a historic injustice when the city seized the resort of Charles and Willa Bruce and forced Black beachgoers out of town 100 years ago.

The bill, if passed, would allow Los Angeles County, which currently runs a lifeguard center on the site, to transfer the property to the Bruce family. State legislation is necessary to lift the restriction that the state placed on the property when it transferred the two parcels to L.A. County in 1995.

"We stand here today to introduce a bill that will correct this gross injustice and allow the land to be returned to the Bruce family," Bradford said Friday. "It is my hope that this legislation will not be the last in a series of actions by the state to address centuries of atrocious actions against Black Americans." ...
 , maybe.
The issue has stirred controversy in this very white city. After hours of heated public testimony, the City Council on Tuesday night voted against issuing an apology, despite many residents urging them to do so. Officials decided, instead, to issue a "statement of acknowledgement and condemnation" of what happened.

Many have said apologizing is an important step forward, while other longtime residents and community leaders have pushed back, arguing that the residents of today shouldn't apologize for something that happened almost 100 years ago. Some have also expressed concern that issuing a formal apology could open the city up to potential lawsuits....

'White Lives Matter' rallies flop as hardly anyone shows up

 Antifa and anti-racist counterprotesters did turn out. Plus:
... Sunday’s round of racist rallies seemed destined for failure, said Megan Squire, a computer science professor at Elon University in North Carolina who tracks online extremism.

The online organizers of the North Carolina rally were uninformed about state law governing protests, including laws that disallowed firearms, Squire said. The organizers were also generally inept at using Telegram, where the event was announced, and unable to identify “obvious trolls in their midst.”

The efforts behind Sunday’s rallies were “haphazard and ill-informed,” Squire said. “They’re not sending their best.”

The “White Lives Matter” rallies were disrupted in several cities after activists infiltrated their online groups and leaked internal chats to journalists. Those chats were reported to have indicated that the events were being planned by the extremist group the Proud Boys and by self-described fascists and Nazis who framed the rallies as peaceful events unaffiliated with known hate groups to recruit more mainstream members.

Organizers in several cities canceled events because of sabotage by antifa activists. Raleigh’s organizer called off a rally Friday, telling subscribers, “It turns out that the 11th is a disaster.”

Two of the largest Telegram channels dedicated to events in Philadelphia and New York City were shown to be traps created by anti-fascist activists. Another local activist tweeted screenshots of the plan's reveal with a warning Saturday to would-be rallygoers: “Given how riddled these chats are with antifascists ... it might be time to rethink whether you really want to trust a bunch of anonymous internet weirdos to show up with you in your city."

... Beyond legal consequences, self-described antifa activists have made it costly to be associated with far-right and racist groups, many of them using online sleuthing to match participants at extremist rallies to their real-life identities and employers....

"home to Florida" - Maybe they want to keep their jail classy. :)

Idk, there's the $7500 bail, plus AZ aggravated assault is a felony and bail jumping is an additional charge. Wouldn't extradition be likely?

3 Men Indicted On Federal Hate Crime Charges In Ahmaud Arbery Killing

A grand jury has charged three Georgia men with federal hate crimes and attempted kidnapping in the death of Ahmaud Arbery, a Black man who was shot while jogging last year.

Gregory McMichael, 65; his son, Travis McMichael, 35; and William "Roddie" Bryan, 51, were each charged with one count of interference with rights and with one count of attempted kidnapping, according to a Justice Department statement.

Travis and Gregory McMichael also face charges of using guns to inflict violence.

The indictment alleges that the defendants used force and threats to intimidate and interfere with Arbery's right to use a public street because he was Black.

The McMichaels chased Arbery through a suburban neighborhood of Brunswick, Ga., yelling at him, cutting off his jogging route with their truck, and threatening him with guns....

Ethnic intimidation charges filed after MLK monument in Hendersonville defaced

Image

A rarely-used ethnic intimidation charge has been levied against the man suspected of defacing a Hendersonville monument that pays tribute to Martin Luther King Jr.

According to authorities, witnesses saw a man scrawling on the image of the civil rights leader last Wednesday and called police. Chief Blair Myhand said suspect Heath Justus, 31, was arrested at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Park....

Justus faces misdemeanor charges, including damage to real property and ethnic intimidation.

Image
Sigh. However, it may not be quite as evil as it appears:
... Myhand said Justus may struggle with mental health issues.

"He knew what he was doing, obviously, but I think that there are some other issues at play that may have made his judgement less than ideal," Myhand said.

The maximum sentence for the charge is 120 days, and Lowrance (Melinda, president of the Henderson County branch of the NAACP) hopes Justus gets the maximum....

Thanks to the Rev. Al Sharpton for the reminder, 99 years ago today:

Tulsa race massacre
Tulsa Race Massacre Survivors Recall Century-Old Horrors During Congressional Hearing

Centenarians who survived the 1921 destruction of a thriving Black district in Tulsa, Oklahoma, told members of Congress at a hearing on Wednesday that they are still waiting for justice.

“By the grace of God, I am still here. I have survived. I have survived to tell this story,” Lessie Benningfield Randle, 106, said in front of the House Judiciary’s Civil Rights and Civil Liberties Subcommittee. “Hopefully now you all will listen to us while we are still here.”

The hearing was timed to align with the centennial of what’s known as the Tulsa race massacre, in which a white mob leveled a Black community called Greenwood in May 1921, razing businesses, killing an estimated 300 Black people and leaving another 10,000 homeless.

Randle was one of three survivors to speak about the atrocities and is part of a reparations lawsuit filed last year against the city of Tulsa, the county of Tulsa, the state of Oklahoma, and the Tulsa Chamber of Commerce for the two-day attack....

Viola Fletcher, 107, was 7 years old when she and her family were forced to flee their home as a racist mob descended upon them in the night, she said. Her brother Hughes Van Ellis, a 100-year-old World War II veteran who served in an all-Black unit, joined her in offering testimony....

Georgia park with giant Confederate carving approves changes

The board overseeing a mountain park near Atlanta with a giant carving of Confederate leaders voted Monday to relocate Confederate flags from a busy walking trail and create a museum exhibit that acknowledges the site’s connection to the Ku Klux Klan.
It's a start.
The moves were part of an effort by the Stone Mountain Memorial Association to address criticism of the park’s Confederate legacy and shore up its finances. The chairman of the association’s board promised more changes.

“We’ve just taken our first step today to where we need to go,” the Rev. Abraham Mosley said at a news conference after the vote. Mosley, appointed by Gov. Brian Kemp last month, is the board’s first African American chairman.

The board did not address the carving at Monday’s meeting, but Mosley did not rule out changes to it in the future. Critics have called on the board to remove the colossal sculpture of Gen. Robert E. Lee, Confederate President Jefferson Davis and Gen. Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson from the mountain’s northern face. Completed in 1972, it measures 190 feet (58 meters) across and 90 feet (27 meters) tall. It is the largest Confederate monument ever crafted and has special protection enshrined in Georgia law.
Its destruction is a must for me.
... Work on the Stone Mountain sculpture languished until the state bought the mountain and surrounding land in 1958 for a public park. Finishing the monument gained renewed urgency amid resistance from Georgia and other Southern states to the civil rights movement and efforts to end segregation.
Of course.
... Former DeKalb County NAACP President John Evans told the Stone Mountain board before the vote that they needed to do more.

“We need to take down the flags. We need to change all the street names and do what we said we were going to do: eliminate the Confederacy from Stone Mountain Park,” he said.

A member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans who spoke at Monday’s meeting said maintaining the carving at Stone Mountain is not racist but a way to honor the soldiers who fought for the Confederacy. Eric Cleveland said he did not have a big problem with the changes the board approved, calling them a “compromise,” but he said they would embolden critics.

“These people will not stop until our history is completely erased,” he said.
:crybaby:
The museum exhibit approved by the board will relate the history of the carving, including its roots in efforts to maintain segregation, said Bill Stephens, Stone Mountain Memorial Association’s CEO. It will also reflect the site’s role in the rebirth of the Ku Klux Klan. The group marked its comeback with a cross burning atop the mountain on Thanksgiving night 1915.

The board also voted to change the park’s logo, which currently features the Confederate carving, and seek federal recognition of a bridge built by a prominent African American.
