This was fast. Good.
NCAA instructs officials to more strictly enforce slide rule after Kenny Pickett fake slides to TD

... NCAA: No more Kenny Pickett fake slides

The NCAA delivered its answer on Thursday via national coordinator of football officials Steve Shaw, who said in a bulletin that plays like Pickett's run should be blown dead as soon as the runner starts indicating a slide.

The nitty-gritty of the ruling:
... Any time a ball carrier begins, simulates, or fakes a feet-first slide, the ball should be declared dead by the on field officials at that point. The intent of the rule is player safety, and the objective is to give a ball carrier an option to end the play by sliding feet first and to avoid contact. To allow the ball carrier to fake a slide would compromise the defense that is being instructed to let up when the ball carrier slides feet first. A fake slide will not be considered reviewable under Rule 12-3-3 – Dead Ball and Loose Ball.
Basically, the NCAA is telling its officials to call any would-be Pickett copycats down if they fake a slide, under its rule saying a ball carrier is down when he "obviously begins a feet-first slide."

It's a ruling that makes sense, because the whole point of calling a ball carrier down as soon as he starts sliding is player safety. The defense shouldn't have any doubt a player is down once it looks like he's given himself up, otherwise you're asking for a lot of flags and potential injuries. Of course, it could be argued that Wake Forest's defenders gave up way more quickly than they should have.

Fortunately for everyone's peace of mind, the game ended up not really hinging on the touchdown. Pitt would eventually win by a convincing score of 45-21, with Pickett going 20-of-33 with 253 passing yards and two touchdowns through the air....
Good rule, but will it be enforced?

cause sometimes rules don't get enforced in the sec when there's money at stake

It may be sufficient deterrent. I had never seen what Pickett did before.

Could he have changed his mind about sliding when he saw he had a chance to run?
I lean towards saying it was intentional, but that shouldn't matter as far as rule enforcement goes.

Ugh, routed. Next year. Go:

Tomorrow night, 8:30 PM EST
Montana St 9-2 > 7 point favorite @Sam Houston 10-0. Kitties rule!

On ESP+ - Grrr....
I guess my cheer should have been more specific. #8 seed Montana St's Bobcats stomped the #1 seed 3TO Bearkats 42-19 in Huntsville, TX!!! Serves them right for only filling 54% of a 14K stadium. 2 weeks ago Montana St filled 90% of a 17K stadium and Montana filled 95% of a 25K stadium in 2nd round games.

I guess the TV lack didn't matter much, it was 21-0 just 36 seconds into the 2nd. I would have quit watching.

In another quarterfinal unseeded South Dakota St. (11-3) beat @#5 seed Villanova (10-3) 35-21. So, on Sat Montana St gets a home game for the semis! Too bad it's not vs a winter-hating southern team.

FCS

#2 James Madison, which stomped #5 Montana, lost to #3 N Dak St last night 14-20  . I'm no James Madison fan, but N Dak St has won 8 of the last 10 FCS championships! So, go #7 4.5 point underdog @Montana St today (2:00 PM EST ESPN2), but if not go #11 South Dakota St > N Dak St.

FBS, go:

11:00 AM EST

Appalachian State 10-3 > 1 point favorite W Kentucky 8-5, 1st CUSA East Division FBS, On ESPN. 24-31 W KY at the half  .

12:00 AM EST
Deion Sanders-coached Jackson State (11-1) > South Carolina State (6-5), On ABC. HBCU Bowl.

2:15 PM EST
11.5 point favorite Fresno St 9-3 > UTEP 7-5, On ESPN.

3:30 PM EST
UAB 8-4 > 6.5 point favorite BYU (13) 10-2, On ABC. Go Satan!

5:45 PM EST
East Michigan 7-5 > 9.5 point favorite Liberty 7-5, On ESPN. Go Satan!

7:30 PM EST

Woo-hoo, 31-17. 1st trip to the Championship game since 1984 - in 3 weeks in Frisco, TX. MSU's QB is a true frosh from Butte. Can you imagine?

Yuck, 38-59. This is impressive, though:
Western Kentucky QB Bailey Zappe sets NCAA single-season records for passing yards and passing TDs

... Zappe entered the game needed 289 yards to pass former Texas Tech QB B.J. Symons for the most yards in a single season. He got more than enough yards to break that record in the first half alone with a prolific passing performance.

That performance continued in the second half as Zappe broke former LSU and current Cincinnati Bengals QB Joe Burrow's TD record in the third quarter. The record-breaking score came when Zappe found Mitchell Tinsley for a 2-yard TD with less than six minutes to go in the period for his 61st TD of the season. He then added another TD in the second half as WKU pulled away.

Zappe came out of the game with WKU leading by four touchdowns in the fourth quarter. He finished the win 33-of-47 passing for 422 yards and six touchdowns, just missing out on becoming the first QB to throw for 6,000 yards in a season at the top level of college football.

Zappe ends his season 475-of-686 passing for 5,967 yards with 62 TDs and just 11 interceptions. He will be an intriguing prospect in the 2022 NFL draft even if he's not one of the first few quarterbacks selected.

Burrow previously set the TD record when he threw 60 TDs in LSU's 15-0 national title-winning 2019 season. Saturday's Boca Raton Bowl was Western Kentucky's 14th game of the season....

The records come in Zappe's only season at the top level of college football. Zappe transferred to WKU from Houston Baptist ahead of the 2021 season as his offensive coordinator Zach Kittley and other teammates also came to Western Kentucky. Zappe and WKU's offense was so good in 2021 that Kittley — a native of Lubbock, Texas — is leaving WKU after one season to be the offensive coordinator at Texas Tech in 2021.

That's OK. Aztecs haven't played a real home game in two seasons. Their stadium is getting replaced, and in the meantime they've been playing "home" games in LA.

Has anyone ever played 2 Bowls? Is it rumored that SDSU would accept?

NCAA says #17 WF "vs TBD".
https://www.ncaa.com/news/football/arti ... nformation

I guess it makes sense, other teams are either disbanded or committed to upcoming Bowls. That leaves canceling the Gator Bowl, another Bowl game getting canceled due to one team's COVID-19, or playing a team that's already won or lost a Bowl. The best of the latter bunch are #13 BYU (loser to UAB), #23 Louisiana (beat Marshall) or #24 SDSU.

It may be wishful thinking on the part of the local sports people, but the Aztec coach was on TV saying they're ready to go if invited. I did see somewhere else that being an East coast school might help. SDSU has the best record of the available - but that may not be a positive since they're apparently also willing to consider teams with losing records.

What's the realistic alternative? If not a 2nd Bowl for some team like SDSU and no other team loses its Bowl opponent to CV-19, then I think it's got to be a team with less than 6 wins. That said, I'm surprised. Rutgers last played on Nov 27, losing to my Maryland 40-16! Can they really get it together in 8 days less time for sobering up, reassembly and travel?

Oh well, if Rutgers actually receives and accepts the Gator Bowl invitation, go Scarlet Knights!

"Requiring" only 6 wins(.500) results in some fairly crappy teams going bowling. To let in 5-7 Rutgers is just ridiculous. My original "no respect" was regarding the Aztecs, but it also applies to Wake Forest. If it turns into a neo-worthy stomp, WF won't get much credit for stomping a weak opponent that hadn't played or practiced much in a month; if Rutgers manages to pull off a win, WF will be humiliated and trashed, which wouldn't have happened if Aggies had taken better care of their players. A loss to Texas A&M isn't the same as a loss to an otherwise unqualified team.

For general holiday bowl fans, we've got the Holiday Bowl on 12/28, with UCLA and NC State playing in Petco Park. Probably most generic fans here would pick that instead of an expensive last-minute flight to Jacksonville, leaving only the players families and some alumni in the Gator Bowl stands. For a moment I forgot the purpose of the bowls is to make money, not necessarily to produce good football.
