The car thread ...

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Gee, one would think that "an honors student (who) scored very high in all (his) college application tests" would have noticed years ago that O Really (English mom) frequently uses British spelling. I guess we found more things that you're lying about, Useless slimeball.

Nice.

I wanted one of those in college.

Couldn't afford to buy one.

Had to wait until a year after graduation to buy an old Plymouth for about $600. That was around 1976. Still have it. Drove it up to Portland, down to LA, and all over the state of California. Has some bear claw marks on the roof, as well as some dents (probably from same bear). Good times.

I'm sure you enjoy hurting butts, but sorry, not interested.

What line were you in when they were passing out wit and a sense of humor?

Did you accidentally get in the butthole line and get an extra one?

Hell, man, that's perfect. Nobody could come out of that car and be anything but clean. If any of us had it today, we'd not be able to stop smiling while just sitting in it. Passers by would think we're tripping.

I don't like it. It looks like a car that would bring bad news. And it looks like a Volkswagen with the engine in front and the room to put it in.

Funny thing about that Metropolitan. My dad, who went through cars fairly quickly, bought the thing as a sort of novelty, and had driven it for about 6 months before he got tired of it. About that time I wrecked my Chevy though through no fault of my own, so I got punished/stuck with the Metropolitan which for a high schooler at that time was about like wearing argyle socks and a "kick me" sign on the back of a Christmas sweater. Drove that sucker about a year or year and a half, I guess. Meanwhile, Pop got himself something else. (like this one, but without the Continental kit)

You see the Metropolitans a lot at car shows now, though. Almost all restored to original, rarely customized. They had a 4-cylinder Austin engine, with a three-speed shift coming out of a hole in the dash that had a habit of locking up. Crappy hydraulic clutch, 0-almost 60 in 5 minutes. Bench seat. Flaky paint.

Funny, my dad was a little car nuts also. He imported a 1967 Simca Berton Bertone for his pleasure.

Oh you're familiar with that sleek pile of trainwreck, eh? Actually that's why Lady O v.1 (the "starter wife") was driving it. Her dad had it and started to hate it because it was so unreliable. She thought it was soooo cool, so "oh please dad, let me have it..." Among other incidents, it damn near got her killed on a railroad track.

The Dauphine's were pretty cool - the 4CV's too. I would have traded the Metropolitan for either of those.

A buddy of mine in college had a faded powder blue 50s something Morris Minor. Near the top of my memories that the battery was about the same size as the motor and the directional signals were pointing arrows that were manually operated by a lever from each door post. "Honey, duck, I need to signal for a right turn."
