I've never been much of a Tiger fan, not because I didn't admire his play, but because of the ridiculous amount of coverage that followed him constantly. F'rinstance it's really annoying to read about some tournament and find up front that "Tiger did this, Tiger did that, Tiger shocked the crowd by putting catsup on his hot dog, Tiger finished 18th. And oh, by the way, some other players showed up and somebody may have won but we don't know because we were following Tiger."
ABC News final report tonight was on his return. It said he is "back on the leader board" at one under par. It did not mention that he's in a 9-way tie for 11th, nor that South Korean Sungjae Im is ahead at 5 under.

Right to O Really's point.

But in this case, he is the story.

I'd disagree. He's A story. He's a BIG story. But he's not THE story. Tonight on CBS news, they did about about 2 minutes on the Masters and Tiger's comeback. Never did get around to mentioning the leader at all. Would it have been so hard to open with "The Masters got underway today and after one round, the leader is S Korean Sungjae Im, at -5. Tiger Tiger Tiger Tiger...

Most likely, day one of the Masters wouldn't even be mentioned on the national news tonight without the Tiger factor.

He was today's story.

You'll get your winner honorable mention on Sunday.

+2 on Friday, now tied for 19th. He makes the cut, but it looks like the story will be that he walked the whole way. Kudos for coming back at all, though.

Actually, I'm with O Really. I'm fine with the Tiger stories, but I think it was disrespectful to him to not mention his standing, and "Rude" to not name Sungjae Im as the leader. I did not watch or read any Friday stories to see what that coverage was like.

If he wins it's going to be a good story.

I understand Tiger's return is a big story. So was Alex Smith's, with a similar injury and similar long odds of ever coming back. But it's the Masters, ferpetesake - bigger than any one guy, and leading or winning is often a career high for players. And TV showed Tiger eating a sandwich behind a bush, instead of covering other players at the time.

Was it the famous pimento cheese sandwich for $1.50?

Good to know you're not alone in mocking the coverage.
‘What next, a bathroom break?’ – Masters fans in hysterics as TV cuts away from golf to show Tiger Woods eat sandwich
But then again.
Woods birdied the next two holes immediately after his sandwich stop
What was in that sandwich?

Golfers around the country need to know.

I'm sensing a follow up.

I like the tiger cozy for his golf club. That merits coverage of its own.

The 2022 wunderkind is leading by 3. Tiger was 21 when he won his first Masters 25 years ago, still the youngest ever.

Tiger is 16 out of the lead and tied for 41st after going +6, "his worst Masters round ever".

This is crap. So Tiger, along with Alex Smith, makes one of the biggest comebacks in pro sports ever, to go from maybe losing a leg - not ever walking to playing even one competitive round in the effin' Masters, and after two decent rounds he shoots a "worst" 78. And the article writer suddenly loses sympathy, empathy, or whatever.

Sure Tiger maybe built and had higher expectations than he might have - all the talk about "he's going there not just to play but to win" - but still. He's accomlished a lot by being there and he and everybody else should be saying "great for him to be able to play, he gave it his best and we can now look forward to seeing more "old Tiger" in other tournaments". They shouldn't be saying things like this crap:
AUGUSTA, Ga. — Thursday morning, Tiger Woods defied belief. Saturday afternoon, reality caught up with him.

Roughly 50 hours after he strode to the first tee at Augusta National riding a wave of cheers from a mass of patrons thousands strong, Woods played like what he is: a man still recovering from a catastrophic car wreck, a man with enough metal in his body to set off TSA sensors, a man who’s held together with duct tape and willpower.

Woods shot 78 on the day, his worst performance ever at the Masters, and the round didn’t even look that pretty. He struggled to place his approach shots anywhere near the flag, and he struggled to get any putt to drop. He used clubs as impromptu canes, and when he left the scoring room to fulfill his media obligations, he visibly limped so badly that even stepping up onto the one-step podium came with risk.

BTW, not golf, but related to comebacks - slightly less than a month after Tony Hawk broke his femur (not cracked, but clean broken all the way through and displaced), he is walking almost normally with a cane, and actually took a gentle roll on a skateboard.
