A Comprehensive Look at Why The Cubs Suck
...

Now on to Cubs analysis. I will start by giving my thoughts on the team in two words.

They suck.

Most recently, they suck because they couldn’t even do what they prided themselves on directly after the All-Star Break. You will recall that they beat up on the lowly Nationals and Reds, then lost two of three the strong Phillies.

Last night, they got straight up run by the Nats, losing by a final of 15-6. Really? The Nationals beat a team 15-6? In fact, it was the most runs the Nationals have scored all season, and they did so against our “ace” Carlos Zambrano.

...
Is anyone surprised?

Yay Cubs!

The Chicago Cubs today narrowly avoided a full sweep by the Milwaukee Brewers. The final score was 2-0, Cubs. But they lost the series, 1-2, to the Brewers.

Cubs overall ratings are 9 wins to 13 losses. A baby step away from the cellar stairs.

Stay tuned.

That was kind, and good-sporty, but really for an adult the thrill would be catching the homer. What's an adult going to do with a random baseball. Good on him to give it to the kid, who'll now have a life-long memory.

 That's a helluva hug.

What's a Toronto fan going to do with a NYY homer ball? Even his friends won't be impressed.

Anywhere else they would've thrown it back.

And in Cubs news... they are now at a 9-14. That's 9 wins to 14 losses. This after losing 1-3 to the White Sox yesterday. Today's game still in progress. Will the Cubs lose again?

Cubs lose again to the White Sox, drop to a near cellar dweller 9 wins to 15 losses for the season.

What's not to like?

Today the Cubs play the NL Central leaders, the Brewers.

What's not to like?

As "news" only because it's unusual, perennial cellar-dwelling Padres find themselves in second place a half-game behind the league-leading Dodgers - actually having won one more game than LA. Padres are a lot like UNC football, though, providing an excellent chance of heartbreak.

In not-news, the A's have resumed their spot at the bottom as pre-season analysts predicted.

Best baseball story continues to be the kid getting the ball and getting to meet Mike Judge. Nate Burleson noted that it's a good thing for baseball when a young fan can become devoted to a player and the player (with team support) actually respond kindly. That was one of the things we enjoyed when we used to go to Blue Jays games pre-season. Players would actually talk to fans.

 Yep, AL West cellar, just 1 1/2 games out of the AL cellar. Funny that no BRDistas thought that the pre-season analysts were correct . . . oh wait . . .

And yet, the Cubs actually have a worse record than the A's, in terms of games won vs. games lost.

The A's are at .400. The Cubs are at .375. And the only thing keeping the Cubs out of the cellar are the atrocious Cincinnati Reds, who have a won/lost percentage of .120. That's 3 games won, 22 games lost. But I'm sure the Cubs are more than capable of joining the Reds in the deep dark concrete bunker known as the cellar.

I doubt anybody is surprised by that - surely not the 2,800 fans who show up for games. I've read the owner's trying to create some sort of vicious circle to make everybody miserable so they'll just run them off to Vegas or somewhere. (1) put out a bad product; (2) because of having such a sorry team in a run-down stadium, attendance tanks; (3) because the city isn't supporting the team, they have to move. Or believe that if they get a new stadium the owner will buy some new players and win pennants.

Pretty much the same with the Jags in NFL.

Tomorrow the A's meet the Twins in Minnesota at Target Field. Although the Twins are at the top of their central division, at least one sports writer, Andrew Jett, is predicting the A's will win:
PICK: I’m going to take a stab on Oakland here. The bad news for the A’s is that they’ve scored one run or fewer in three of their last five games. The good news is that Irvin is on the hill for this opener. In his last three starts combined, Irvin has just two earned on 13 hits and six walks across 16.0 innings total. If he can post a quality start—and if Oakland can manage a few knocks on offense—I think the A’s have a decent shot at a win.

Andrew Jett's Free Pick:
Oakland Athletics +161

Ouch.

Just got skunked by the Twins, 1-0. The A's left 2 on base in the 9th  . Now 8 losses in a row, 10-17 and just 1 game out of the AL cellar.
