Cooper update: He remains in critical condition following Wednesday’s surgery. When he awoke Thursday morning, there were initially positive signs such as no fever and he was trying to breathe over the vent which is good. As the day progressed, however, the spikes of high fevers, up to 104, returned. A CT scan revealed fluid in his esophagus lungs and now around his pelvis. He remains on a ventilator and a breathing tube. His mother Keely has asked that everyone please keep sending love and prayers as Cooper continues to fight as hard as he can.❤️🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻❤️🙏🏻

It's rough :( . Disease patients can stay critical for a long time, as with Covid. It's touchier with trauma/surgical patients - infections, blood disorders, strokes, hypoxic brain injury, other organs failing, etc. Kids are both resilient and vulnerable, depending.

Document Shows Uvalde Officials Sought Favorable Account of Police Action

... . The clearest picture yet is expected to come Sunday when a Texas House committee is set to report the results of its investigation, one of several overlapping inquiries into what took place.

The committee’s report was expected to spread blame beyond Chief Pete Arredondo, the head of the small Uvalde school district police force who McCraw has said was principally responsible for a law enforcement response that he has called an “abject failure.”

Instead, the committee was expected to find fault broadly among the several law enforcement agencies and officers that responded, including dozens of officers from the U.S. Border Patrol, the local sheriff’s office and the Department of Public Safety, according to a person familiar with the investigation.

The conclusion, the person said, would be that the delayed response was not one person’s failure, but rather that of dozens of trained officers and supervisors. Nobody knew what was going on and nobody tried to take charge, the person said, citing failures of inaction and communication by the agencies.

Such a finding would echo what others have already concluded after studying the sometimes contradictory versions of events offered by state and local officials.

“There was no incident commander, that’s the truth of the matter — it was complete system failure,” said state Sen. Roland Gutierrez, who represents the area and has been critical of the version presented by the state police that holds no other law enforcement agencies accountable. “Why didn’t they take command and control of the situation?” he asked.

Again, the cowardly cops have blood on their hands, but not as much as the gunhuggers that insist on such easy access to these weapons. This will not be mentioned in the investigations of the tragedy, but it should be featured in each.

‘Systemic failures’ in Uvalde school massacre, report finds

Nearly 400 law enforcement officials rushed to a mass shooting at a Uvalde elementary school, but “systemic failures” created a chaotic scene that lasted more than an hour before the gunman who took 21 lives was finally confronted and killed, according to a report from investigators released Sunday.

The nearly 80-page report was the first to criticize both state and federal law enforcement, and not just local authorities in the South Texas town for the bewildering inaction by heavily armed officers as a gunman fired inside a fourth-grade classroom.

“At Robb Elementary, law enforcement responders failed to adhere to their active shooter training, and they failed to prioritize saving innocent lives over their own safety," the report said....

According to the report, 376 law enforcement officers massed at the school. The overwhelming majority of those who responded were federal and state law enforcement. That included nearly 150 U.S. Border Patrol agents and 91 state police officials.
376! :wtf:
... The report noted that many of the hundreds of law enforcement responders who rushed to the school were better trained and equipped than the school district police — which the head of the Texas Department of Public Safety, the state police force, previously faulted for not going into the room sooner.

“In this crisis, no responder seized the initiative to establish an incident command post," the report read.
Incident command is an automatic need, in far more situations than an active shooter. How did they fuck this up?
... “It’s a joke. They’re a joke. They’ve got no business wearing a badge. None of them do,” Vincent Salazar, grandfather of 11-year-old Layla Salazer, said Sunday....

Flowers that had been piled high in the city’s central square had been removed as of Sunday, leaving a few stuffed animal maps scattered around the fountains alongside photos of some of the children who were killed.
"stuffed animal maps"?
No single officer has received as much scrutiny since the shooting as Pete Arredondo, the Uvalde school district police chief who resigned from his newly appointed seat on the City Council after the shooting. Arredondo told the committee he treated the shooters as “barricaded subject," according to the report, and defended never treating the scene as an active-shooter situation because he did not have visual contact with the gunman.

Arredondo also tried to find a key for the classrooms, but no one ever bothered to see if the doors were locked, according to the report.

“Arredondo’s search for a key consumed his attention and wasted precious time, delaying the breach of the classrooms," the report read.
The door was not locked and could not be locked. No one checked. Opps.
... Calls for police accountability have grown in Uvalde since the shooting. So far, only one officer from the scene of the deadliest school shooting in Texas history is known to be on leave.
Is that Arredondo or are they talking about someone else?
...The committee didn’t “receive medical evidence” to show that police breaching the classroom sooner would have saved live, but it concluded that “it is plausible that some victims could have survived if they had not had to wait 73 additional minutes for rescue.”
Why didn't they gather that evidence, and it's CERTAIN. Comment:
Turns out that the only thing that will stop 376 good guys with body armor, automatic weapons, and ballistic shields, is a bad teenager with a gun.

To be fair, cops may face a stressful situation once a month. Kindergarten teachers face 20 kindergartners 5 days a week ;) . Great minds:
Well, for one, they're kindergarten teachers, so they're already tougher than police officers.

*I am not for arming teachers, btw.

:---P
Arming teachers will give the cops someone else to blame for the failure to stop a nut with an AK.
Almost my exact words:
While I certainly do not leave any teacher should be armed, I truly believe a kindergarten teacher is braver and much more able to deal with stressful situations
As we learn the contents of the report from Uvalde massacre…”the good guys with the guns” F A I L E D MISERABLY!!!!!! 19 babies are dead. We are a shameful lot!!!!
to sell more guns. That's all they've got.

When we venture off the island to pick up RV supplies, this is the WalMart we shop. Was an "altercation" not a terrorist event, but still.
A customer and an employee of the Walmart in Mount Vernon, along with three 19-year-old men, were injured in a shooting inside the store Sunday night, according to Mount Vernon police.

Officers were called to the store in the 2300 block of Freeway Drive for reports of shots being fired inside the building shortly before 10 p.m., according to the Mount Vernon Police Department.

Police investigators believe the shooting occurred after a group of men entered the store and got into “an altercation” with a another group of men already inside the store, police said.

A 72-year-old customer and a 24-year-old employee were injured, as were three 19-year-old men who had been involved in the altercation, police said.

5 shot, assuming that all 5 of the injured were shot, qualifies it as a mass shooting. :problem:
