Ftr, Mark Twain was a vicious critic of the government, most visibly its genocidal colonial war in the Philippines. The US had promised to free the Filipinos from Spain. Instead, it reneged and imposed its own imperialist subjugation. The brutal Philippine–American War lasted about 14 years and cost the lives of up to 1 million civilians.

On October 24, 1901, when US Marines landed in Samar during the Philippine-American War (sometimes rather patronisingly referred to as the Philippine Insurrection), Brigadier General 'Hell-roaring Jake' Smith issued his orders: "I wish you to burn and kill; the more you burn and kill, the better it will please me."

Some Americans, notably Mark Twain, strongly objected to the annexation of the Philippines. (Many other Americans mistakenly thought that the Philippines wanted to be 'liberated' by the United States.) Twain was, in fact, the most prominent literary opponent of the bloody war and imperialism in general, and served as a vice president of the Anti-Imperialist League from 1901 until his death. His short story 'The War Prayer' remains one of the world's great pro-peace pieces of literature. The story follows this except from Twain's autobiography (1899):

A classic anti-imperialist indictment from Mark Twain. The contempt, sarcasm, and ‘anti-Americansim’ of this inflamed commentary on reports of the 1906 massacres of Moros in the Philippines by U.S. occupation forces was deemed too incendiary to publish in his lifetime, not seeing print until a decade after his death. If these same words were written today, perhaps about Gaza, Twain might well be facing ‘terrorism’ charges.

The Moro Crater Massacre

On March 8, 1906, an American military detachment attacked a village of Filipino Muslims (Moros) living in the hollow of a mountain in one of the southern islands. Every one of 600 men, women, and children were killed. This was the Moro Massacre, which drew an angry response from Mark Twain and other anti-imperialist Americans. Twain led the Anti-Imperialist League which opposed the annexation of the Philippines by the United States. He wrote 'Incident in the Philippines' (published posthumously in 1924) in response to the Moro Crater Massacre.

On March 22, 1905 Harper's Bazaar rejected Mark Twain's pro-peace short story, 'The War Prayer', as "not quite suited to a woman's magazine". Eight days later, Twain wrote to his friend Dan Beard, to whom he had read the story, "I don't think the prayer will be published in my time. None but the dead are permitted to tell the truth." Unfortunately, Twain had an exclusive contract with Harper & Brothers, so the 1,300-word classic tale remained unpublished until 1923. We reproduce it here:
