Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Group of 4,000 Anonymous Google Employees Urging Company Not to Be “In the Business of War" Voted 2018 Arms Control Persons of the Year

A group of 4,000 anonymous Google employees opposing the company's work on a Pentagon project using artificial intelligence (AI), which could be used to improve drone targeting, was chosen as the 2018 Arms Control Persons of the Year for 2018.

Due to the employees’ actions, which included an internal petition to company management, Google ended its work on Project Maven when the contract expired and announced it would focus on “socially beneficial” AI and avoid work that causes “overall harm.” ...
Cool.

I voted for whichever of the candidates is working to salvage the Iran nuclear deal. I vote in these things (like worst polluter, etc.) based on what I think will have the most impact, but that's just me. The Google employees are amazing, but they already won their fight.

US Government's Refusal to Confirm or Deny It Put American Journalist on Drone Kill List Called 'Chilling'
"The government seeks to shield itself from all inquiry into the process by which it acts as prosecutor, judge, jury, and executioner."

Lawyers for an American journalist who believes he was placed on the government's infamous "kill list" warned Tuesday that the rights of all U.S. citizens are at stake if the country's drone assassination program is allowed to continue....

As Common Dreams reported at the time of the filing, Kareem believes the Obama administration placed him on the kill list and wants President Donald Trump to remove his name, asserting that his inclusion "is the result of arbitrary and capricious agency action, accomplished without due process, and in violation of the United States Constitution and U.S. and international law."

... The government responded that if those included on the U.S. kill list were to be informed and given a trial, national security could be jeopardized during the court case.

Such a claim suggests that the right of the U.S. to operate its drone program trumps Kareem's—and all Americans'—Fifth and 14th Amendment rights, Reprieve said.

"By invoking the state secrets privilege in the context of designating a U.S. citizen for lethal action, the government seeks to shield itself from all inquiry into the process by which it acts as prosecutor, judge, jury, and executioner of plaintiff Bilal Abdul Kareem," said Reprieve and the law firm Lewis Baach Kaufmann Middlemiss, which is also representing Kareem, in a statement Tuesday.

The government, in its motion to dismiss, said that Kareem's due process rights would be satisfied simply by allowing him to present evidence that he has been wrongly placed on the kill list, and that the government was under no obligation to repond.

Reprieve rejected that argument, saying it was akin to "limiting the accused to unilaterally contending that he is innocent of unknown charges in the hopes of persuading a silent, opaque coterie of government officials not to kill him."

"The government's assertion that it has the right to mark its own citizens for death, based on secret information, without affording them the legal protections offered by the Constitution, is chilling," said Jennifer Gibson, co-counsel for Kareem.

"The consequences of this action are too severe," Reprieve added, "and the right [to due process] too foundational to a constitutional democracy, to allow the government to secretly condemn an American citizen to death."

Too bad you don't hold a remarkable resemblance to Lennon and had a chance encounter with David Chapman back in 1980, but never mind that. Did you know that big drug companies are in favor of murdering babies? No shit; I saw a tv ad for a drug just today, Entresto I think it was, and it was all joy and bliss and the promise of a better life but at the end the announcer says that the drug "may cause harm or death to an unborn infant" so they encourage pregnant women not to take it, just as I would encourage a woman not to get an abortion, but never mind that. The fact is that big pharma markets drugs that may harm or kill an unborn infant; and keep in mind that they would not even make that statement unless the (gasp) government made them do so. Aren't you fucking outraged at this? Or do you pick and choose your ethics? I'm just kidding; I know the answer.

            Whistle blowing to responsible journalists so that Americans might be better informed;

Whistleblowers, Journalists, and Free Press Advocates Condemn Espionage Act Charges Against Drone Whistleblower Daniel Hale

... Hale is a veteran of the US Air Force. During his military service from 2009 to 2013, he participated in the US drone program, working with both the National Security Agency and the Joint Special Operations Task Force at the Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan. Hale has been an outspoken opponent of the US targeted killings program and appeared in the Ridenhour-winning documentary National Bird. The US government accuses Hale of providing a journalist with documents that brought to light the decision-making process for targeted killings and revealed that nearly 90% of those killed by drone strikes were not the intended target. If convicted Hale could face up to 50 years in prison.

“Treating whistleblowing as being akin to espionage is absolutely outrageous. Indictments are just unproven allegations by the Government., and everyone is innocent until proven guilty. Nonetheless, it is important to stress that the US government wants to send someone to jail for decades for allegedly helping a journalist expose human rights abuses,” said Chip Gibbons, Policy & Legislative Counsel for Defending Rights & Dissent.

“Hale has been indicted for allegations that constitute whistleblowing in the public interest. The larger concern is not what Hale did or did not do, but what our government is doing, in secret, and lying about. Hale is a military veteran with a strong conscience, and if you look at the armed drone program, it’s easy to understand why someone with integrity would be uncomfortable with its utter lack of accountability,” said Jesselyn Radack, whistleblower attorney for Daniel Hale and Director of WHISPeR.

... The full statement and list of signers can be found here.
Unlike other whistleblower cases we've debated, Hale revealed policy practices and war crimes, not things like surveillance tactics and vulnerable agents. We've hit the slippery slope.

It's always been a slippery slope, because facts and circumstances are different for each event. So it takes a good bit of informed judgement to determine the difference in whistleblowing and unlawful and harmful disclosure of protected information. A lot of it goes back to intent as well as content, and also process of disclosure. But no matter about what or for whatever reason, I'd say that a person who passes along protected information to a publisher should reasonably expect that the justification and consequences of his actions would likely be determined in court. Ellsberg expected as much.

Agreed, but it's also legit for society to deem that the value of the revelation outweighs the offense of revealing. Public interest is what matters, and we're not automatons. Free Hale, he had but one flash drive to give for his country. :D

Idk, Nathan was a revolutionary after all. The govt was the Brits, Obama would be King George and killing civilians was not normal warfare. Ol' Nathan might be proud.

U.S. drone strike kills 30 pine nut farm workers in Afghanistan

This was no "accident". Our homicidal military hit what it was aiming at with extreme precision and devastating effect. Instead, this is the predictable result of a failed 18-year occupation and policy that just doesn't care enough about human life to get it right. Think of all of the families that will never get over this.

If some suicide bomber wipes out a grade school play cast and audience in order to take out the off-duty SoCal drone operator watching his daughter on stage, is that okay because he was “a coward hiding among civilians”?
