What's that about when you get a lemon

Olivia spent her pandemic quarantine time making videos and now with NIL she's about to make some money.

https://nypost.com/2021/10/08/inside-th ... -movement/

"Dunne is currently the most-followed collegiate athlete across the combined social platforms. Her Twitter account also has more than 17,000 followers."

'“I was quarantined in Florida and I just started making content at the beach, doing flips and filming it. My videos started to get on the ‘for you’ page [on Instagram] a lot more, so more people saw them … and it took off,” Dunne said. “Then I went to LSU"

"'At the level of followers that [Dunne] has, she could easily make close to north of $1 million dollars in annual income,” Thompson said."

Ah, to be young, hot, blonde, lithe and now rich . . .

Idk about y'all, but I pictured NIL money flowing to football and men's basketball players. Maybe that's happening, but hot blondes definitely seem to be raking the dollars in. Maybe I shouldn't be surprised.
Money keeps pouring in for Fresno State basketball’s Cavinder twins. New deal is next-level

Fresno State basketball players Haley and Hanna Cavinder, who could earn close to or more than seven figures this year through Name, Image and Likeness endorsements, have landed an innovative deal with a new clothing company that includes a 25% ownership stake and one of three seats on its board of directors, according to Forbes....

The Cavinder twins, who signed a deal with Boost Mobile on the first day college student-athletes could profit from their name, image and likeness and have since landed a number of high-profile deals, are believed to be the first to land a seat on a company’s board of directors....
5′ 6″ guards. Both are pretty good, but 7-9 Fresno State of the mid-major Mountain West is so-so at best. Not exactly elite athletes. However, they do TikTok dance videos and:

It's a whole new world in college sports. We'll see how it goes.

Speaking of $$$:
SEC to distribute nearly $55M to each member after revenue rose to $777.8M in 2020-21

... The total distribution is made up of revenue generated from television contracts, postseason football games, the SEC championship game in football, the conference's men's basketball tournament, NCAA championships and a supplemental surplus distribution.

It does not include a one-time supplement of approximately $23 million given to each school in 2021 to help offset the financial impact of COVID-19....

The contract came on the heels of (commissioner) Sankey overseeing the future growth of the conference to 16 teams, adding historical Big 12 powerhouse programs Texas and Oklahoma.

Oklahoma and Texas plan to remain in their current conference through June 30, 2025, when the current Big 12 media rights deal expires -- but it's possible that the schools will attempt to exit sooner.
Wow, no wonder they want in.

It's official: USC, UCLA to leave Pac-12 and join Big Ten in 2024

:puke-left: Not acceptable.
... Texas and Oklahoma will officially join the SEC no later than 2025. The departures of Texas and Oklahoma spurred the Big 12 to add BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF. Those schools will officially become Big 12 members in July 2023.
... The loss of USC and UCLA is a massive blow for the Pac-12, and it further distances the Big Ten and SEC from the rest of the FBS conferences, particularly on a financial level.

The Big Ten is currently negotiating its next media rights deal, which could be worth billions. The league's existing deals with ESPN and Fox run through the 2022-23 academic year.

The Pac-12 distributed $344 million among its members in the 2021 fiscal year. For the Big Ten, it was $680 million.

The Los Angeles media market is one of the largest in the country and the USC and UCLA brands are attractive ones for viewers. With USC and UCLA in the fold, the Big Ten would extend its traditionally Midwest reach to the West Coast....

USC and UCLA brings the Big Ten to 16 members, the same number that the SEC will have once Texas and Oklahoma officially join the league. And according to USA Today, the Big Ten could look to expand even further.
:wtf:
How will the Pac-12 respond? The conference added Colorado and Utah in 2011 and has had consistent membership since. But the Pac-12 has not had a team reach the College Football Playoff since Washington in 2016.

Other than the obvious money reason, what's the deal with all the conference switching? Or, I suppose, it's all the money.

I can see some mid-major teams moving into the Power Five for prestige and competitive reasons, though there's also big bucks in doing so. However, I think the conference switching among Power Five teams is exclusively about the money. It's not like there's any other reason that the SEC is superior to the Big 12 or the Big 10 is superior to the Pac 12.

College Park, MD < > Los Angeles for in-conference games and meets, sheesh. :angry-banghead:

The better and/or prettier athletes will have a similar motivation in our new Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) universe. They'll necessarily take into account which markets will be most lucrative, not just which schools will provide the best on-field opportunities.

It gets even worse, maybe even the demise of the Pac-12 and ACC in football, and only the SEC and Big 10 left standing. :wtf:

Pac-12, ACC had chance to save themselves. Instead, it was an all-time botch job.

Not to point out the obvious, but with the exception of some historical success of outliers FSU, Miami (pre-ACC) and the hated Clemson, when has the ACC ever been close to on par in football with SEC/Big10? That would, I think, be never. And for some reason, they wouldn't likely get any better just by joining one of them, eh South Carolina/Maryland?

Just had to go there, didn't you? :( :ateeth: ;)

It hasn't, but the point of the article is that it just passed on a sure slot in the playoffs and thus created the conditions for its complete demise from being "Power" anything. It's all a bit intricate for me to know for sure, but the author's dire conclusions seem credible.

OK, this is a horse of a different color. Lia Thomas has been allowed (over a variety of objections) to compete as a female for her team at UPenn. S/he was dominant, and had competed - though not as well - for the Penn mens team for two years. Okfine. So s/he's a transgender person and now he's a she. Seems like there ought to be some medical checks done to assure a fair and reasonable competition, but hey, I don't make the rules.

Now it turns out s/he's still got a dick and balls. He's not a she after all. Just a He taking hormones and wearing a dress. INVHO, that makes an entirely different discussion from what was at least implied before. Definitely ought to forfeit his wins.

I see it no different from any other performance improvement drug in regard to competition. One might ask why there are different divisions for males and females. Because even though there are some females that are stronger than some males, overall males are larger and stronger than females. A female who takes steroids or whatever to get an advantage is disqualified when caught. A male who takes drugs to qualify in female events and gain an advantage should also be disqualified.

I'm not joining the trans-bashers, and I don't care what anybody does in their own personal life, but nobody has a basic right to compete in college sports. If they don't fit the requirements, then join the vast majority of people who for whatever reason were never on a collegiate team.

It's not very PC but I have mixed feelings about even fully transitioned women competing in women's spots. I'm glad that others are deciding.

I'm also a little annoyed by every meeting wasting time with a declaration of pronouns at the outset. I forget most of them, anyhow, and have no problem with just being corrected if I use the wrong one. I tried declaring that my pronoun is "Hey you," but people didn't think it is as funny as I do.

Then again, I'm the one who most of BRN/BRD thought was female for a couple of years or more, even though it was never a claim I made. Does that make me BRD's trans authority?

That would be you.

I've never been emotionally invested in this one way or another. What I guess I don't understand is why someone would want to compete in something at a high-ish level without a level playing field, where's the victory in that?

Or perhaps it isn't about the atheletic competition or a it's a different type of competition and getting in the game equals a win.

You're probably right.
I know it's possible for women to compete directly against men in some sports - and really, a few could compete in any sport. But for the most part, women aren't going to be truly competitive. So if a female wants to try out for football - sure, and some will make the team but they're likely to be in specialist positions. Baseball? Sure, but they're not likely to be great hitters or be able to throw a runner out at third from right field. Basketball? There are a lot of really good WNBA players, but would any of them start on an NBA team? Probably not. So flip it around - if a guy is an NBA starter isn't he going to dominate in WNBA?

So medically, you can turn a male to a female and vice versa, and that person can be socially and culturally whatever gender they make themselves, but they are still genetically where they started.

Speaking of "trans" athletes ;) , SDSU to the Pac-12?
San Diego State's Brian Dutcher: 'Going to be more realignment'

With San Diego State playing in the school's first-ever Elite Eight NCAA tournament game on Sunday against Creighton, Aztecs coach Brian Dutcher said opportunity looms for the basketball program and the school's athletic department, with both USC and UCLA headed to the Big Ten next season....

San Diego State athletic director John David Wicker said that the program, regardless of whether it's in the Mountain West or Pac-12, will be able to sell regional travel to recruits. He sees the amount of travel that USC and UCLA will have to do for league play as a potential recruiting advantage for San Diego State. When the Aztecs were flying to Orlando for the opening weekend, he said he mentioned 2½ hours into their trip that they'd be only halfway to many Big Ten schools.

"I think that's going to be huge for us," Wicker said. "Maybe it doesn't impact football because football is not that many trips, but everything else, that's a lot of travel. I think it helps."

As Dutcher added, "I just feel like you should play regionally. It's better on the kids. It's easier to be a student-athlete instead of just an athlete."
... The turning point for capturing the city's attention came in 2010-11, when Kawhi Leonard was a sophomore on an Aztecs team that went 34-3. Prior to this season, the school's best chance to reach the Final Four might have come in 2019-20, when it finished 30-2 and appeared in line for a No. 1 seed before the pandemic cancelled the NCAA tournament.
:(
The school's football program has a 7-4 record against Pac-12 schools since 2016, and it made bowl games the past 12 full seasons. In five of the past seven full seasons, San Diego State has won double-digit football games. Since 2010, San Diego State has the highest combined winning percentage of any Division I school in football and men's basketball at 73.8%, ahead of Ohio State (72.9%) and Oregon (71.1%).
:o
"I always thought the Pac-12 would not ask us in with UCLA and USC because they would put us on equal footing, and we would be too great a competitor to let in," Dutcher said. "So now that they're gone and Southern California has a really good team sitting in San Diego, I would think we would be desirable for the Pac-12, the Big 12, a lot of conferences."
Hah, UCLA and USC were afraid of SDSU.

The Big 12 is full of RW cities in RW states and some RW schools.
San Diego State has been building toward this moment. The school opened Snapdragon Stadium for football this past fall; it cost $310 million, and it resonates as the hallmark of its facility projects. The environment at Viejas Arena for basketball on campus has long been regarded as one of the most intense and dynamic in the country. The combination of market, success and landscape uncertainty has made San Diego State's jump to a power conference an inevitability, with time as the looming variable....

Both No. 6 Creighton and No. 5 San Diego State are aiming for their first Final Four appearance on Sunday afternoon.
Football and other field sport capacity 35,000 (expandable to 55,000).
About the Arena

... On March 17, 2009, the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians announced the signing of a 10-year naming rights agreement which changed the name to Viejas Arena....

Viejas Arena seats 12,414 for basketball games....
