My grandfather always had a localized similar border collie type mix. They were all named Shep and did what they were supposed to without any commands.

Wish I could take credit. He was special and smart. Showed up at our door and said "Hi, I'm your family dog, what's for dinner?" He chose wisely.

We thought we had one like that. Little JRT mutt showed up at our door on a Christmas morning when the kid was 6. Great little dog and as we accepted him into the family, but as the Found Dog sign in the yard became almost illegible, the owner and his pack of kids showed up.
Our replacement was full Jerk Russell Terrorist, but somehow we loved him.

I've had squirrel / dog problems too. And don't forget how much trouble I had trying to get Short Louis to stop pestering the alligators.
