Man accused of threatening Biden, Harris in note to neighbor

A Maryland man was charged Wednesday with making death threats against Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden and running mate U.S. Sen. Kamala Harris in a letter left on the doorstep of a neighbor who had yard signs supporting the candidates....

Reed was in state custody when a criminal complaint was filed against him in federal court in Baltimore, U.S. Attorney Robert Hur's office said in a news release.

A door camera captured video of a person resembling Reed leaving the letter on his neighbor's doorstep early on the morning of Oct. 4, authorities said. The neighbor said he didn't know Reed but had several yard signs supporting the Democratic candidates for president and vice president.

“We take these types of threats extremely seriously," Hur said in a statement. “Such threats to commit violence are illegal and have no place in our democracy, and we will hold accountable those who make them.”

The letter threatened violence against Democrats and said that “Grandpa Biden” and Harris would both be attacked and executed, the Secret Service agent’s affidavit says.

An anonymous tip to police led to investigators to question Reed at his home last Tuesday, prosecutors said. He initially denied leaving the letter but was arrested two days later after he admitted writing and delivering it to his neighbor, according to Hur's office.

“He then explained his involvement to the agents by saying that ‘This will happen’ (referring to individuals making threatening comments) due to the political climate,” the Secret Service agent wrote.

The agent noted that Reed was “known to” the Secret Service for making a threatening statement against an unidentified person under the agency's protection in 2014....

The federal charge that he faces carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota on Friday announced that the FBI brought charges against a member of the far-right “Boogaloo Bois” group for organizing and participating in an effort to “incite a riot” outside a Minneapolis police precinct in May amid protests against the police killing of George Floyd.

According to the legal complaint filed Monday, Ivan Harrison Hunter, a 26-year-old from Boerne, Texas, who claims to be a member of the Boogaloo Bois, communicated with fellow members in late May ahead of a planned trip to Minneapolis as police had already started clashing with protesters in the city.

The documents claim that federal agents obtained a video from the evening of May 28 showing an individual walking up to the door of the Third Precinct in Minneapolis and firing 13 rounds from “what appears to be an AK-47 style semiautomatic rifle.”

Federal officials said the shooter can be seen in the footage walking up to the camera and high-fiving other individuals before shouting “Justice for Floyd!”

In the hours that followed, the police building was overrun by demonstrators and severely damaged by fire....

Five US states at high risk of election-related violence from militias, report claims

Five states are at a "high risk" of facing election-related armed violence from militia groups, according to a report.

Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Project and MilitiaWatch released a report that claimed Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, Wisconsin and Oregon are at risk of experiencing violence from militia groups during the 2020 US election.

The report is titled "Standing By: Right-Wing Militia Groups and the US Election," a reference to Donald Trump's "stand back and stand by," which was viewed by many as an endorsement of far-right hate group the Proud Boys....

North Carolina, Texas, California, Virginia and New Mexico were all listed as states that were in "moderate" risk of militia violence.

“Militia groups and other armed non-state actors pose a serious threat to the safety and security of American voters,” the study said. “Throughout the summer and leading up to the general election, these groups have become more assertive, with activities ranging from intervening in protests to organizing kidnapping plots targeting elected officials.”

The report warned that militia groups are attempting to position themselves as supplementary law enforcement agents by providing "security" at public events....

Military veterans are deploying their own 'quick reaction force' to counter Trump's 'army' at the polls

Military veterans anticipating disturbance at polling places throughout the US have established a nonviolent "quick reaction force" — a term used in the armed forces for the small teams that respond immediately in an emergency.

In the past few weeks, roughly 200 veterans signed up to train in deescalation techniques with Common Defense, a grassroots organization that opposes President Donald Trump and seeks to elect progressive candidates and advance policies for former service members. The veterans have mobilized in 45 cities to recruit other veterans to join their cause.

Stephanie Flores, a US Navy veteran who is Common Defense's communications manager, told Insider the group's purpose was to "make sure that we have an election that is fair and that is peaceful."

Flores said the organization taught deescalation techniques for the veteran-volunteers to protest safely and to "make sure all of our ballots are counted" during the election season.

"We've heard it everywhere in the media, even the FBI — there is a real threat about armed militias and all of that," Flores said, referring to reports of voter intimidation by armed citizens. "So that's why we're preparing our veterans and our leaders to be ready to deescalate and protest safely. But our main goal and how we're planning to do this is through narrative."

Armed men arrested near Pennsylvania Convention Center identified

Two armed men have been charged after being found near the Philadelphia convention center where an ongoing vote count could decide the presidential election, officials said.

According to Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner, Joshua Macias, 42, and Antonio Lamotta, 61, both of Chesapeake, Va., have been charged with Concealed Firearm Without a License, a third-degree felony, and Carrying a Firearm on Public Streets or Public Property, a first-degree misdemeanor....

On Thursday, the Philadelphia Police Department received a tip that individuals, armed with firearms, were on their way to the Convention Center area in a silver Hummer truck.

The tip involved a group, possibly a family, who drove up from Virginia, intent on "straightening things out" during the vote count at the Convention Center....

The vehicle had a window sticker and a hat with the logo for the internet group QAnon, which is known for spreading conspiracy theories. The FBI has labeled them a domestic terror threat.

At least 24 congressional candidates in this current election have endorsed or given credit to conspiracy theories promoted by the group....

Dallas Heard objected to a state-wide mask requirement—and accused his colleagues of being involved in a “campaign against the people and the children of God.” The stunning accusation came after Heard spoke to protesters outside the Capitol, where he also expressed his frustration with the mask mandate and insisted he is for the “people.” The lawmaker asked residents to vote out his Democratic colleagues.

“If you had not done such great evil to my people and had simply asked me to ear my mask, I would have,” Heard said during the session, after ripping off his face mask. “But you commanded it, and therefore I declare my right to protests against your false authority and remove my mask.”

To date, 1,341 people have died and about 103,000 more have been infected with the coronavirus in Oregon.
