Idiot box thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Theodore Roosevelt

Two-part series on U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt looking at his work as a progressive reformer as well as his contradictions such as being a passionate conservationist who also hunted animals.
History Channel. 5 hours total, including ads. Interesting and well made.

This may be an easy one. Who did the most readers select for the "TIME100: The World's Most Influential People"?
Spoiler:
Volodymyr Zelenskyy  :-|| . All of the gowns and tuxes there and he taped his message wearing a t-shirt. I like it.

Dark Winds

Dark Winds is an American psychological thriller television series created by Graham Roland based on the Leaphorn & Chee book series by Tony Hillerman. The first season will consist of six episodes, and premiered on AMC and AMC+ on June 12, 2022.
 Good show so far. I was a Tony Hillerman addict at one time. RIP.

The Old Man
FX TV Series 2022– TV-MA

A former CIA officer, who's living off the grid, finds himself on the run from people who want to kill him.

72 year old Jeff Bridges still kicks ass.
I've always liked 76 year old comedic genius John Lithgow in dramatic roles. I still remember thinking he was the best thing in 1993's Cliffhanger, which I otherwise wasn't very impressed with.
Nice to see 58 year old Amy Brenneman still at it, and still good.

I've been watching reruns of a show I never caught the first time around:
Da Vinci's Inquest
TV Series 1998–2006

A Vancouver cop turned coroner searches for truth and justice with the help of his friends.
"The series was critically acclaimed as the best television series in Canada after winning the Gemini Award for Best Dramatic Series for five of its first six seasons."

CBC production. Excellent. Low key, limited US-style cop action, thoughtful, biting dry humor, very Canadian.

Looks good. I may have to sign up.

Ist episode of Endeavour Season 8 is tonight.

Endeavour is a prequel to Morse. Morse ended about 20 years ago after Season 8.

Great setting - Oxford
Cool cars - Endeavour had a 59 Mark 1 Jag and Morse a Mark 2.
Plus, cops almost without guns

So if you haven't watched, then, quick like watch the original 15 seasons before tonight's episode.

The Old Man and further back Dark Winds. I don't subscribe to either but am about to drop Netflix.

Have you seen Barry?

No, I don't do any streaming. I'd be too tempted to watch 24/7 - my weakness.

-0-? I'm watching both on cable. The blurb I quoted says Dark Winds is available on AMC+. Old Man probably streams on whoever carries FX.

If your cable has a DVD, it's little different than streaming.

My kid talked me into splitting YouTube TV+. It's way cheaper than Cox and has more channels and unlimited recording. You have to use an antenna for local.

I've shunned having a DVR for the same reason. I regret it sometimes, but not that much. There's plenty to watch in real time, or I can do other things.

This is new to me. I'm beginning to understand that the British are funnier than we are.

I'm watching this right now on BET:
Harriet (2019)

Harriet serves as a sincere tribute to a pivotal figure in American history -- albeit one undermined by its frustratingly formulaic approach.

From her escape from slavery through the dangerous missions she led to liberate hundreds of slaves through the Underground Railroad, the story of heroic abolitionist Harriet Tubman is told.
Idk about "formulaic". My own opinion is that it's a bit melodramatic, but a helluva person and story, pretty well told.

Juneteenth presente!

Citizen Ashe
2021, Documentary/Biography, 1h 36m

Directors Rex Miller and Sam Pollard explore the enduring legacy of tennis great and humanitarian Arthur Ashe in a feature documentary as elegant, meaningful, and poignant as the life he lived. Ashe's widow, brother, friends from his childhood in Richmond to his Grand Slam tournament playing and coaching days, as well as confidantes that nurtured his personal evolution from sports legend to global activist, describe the key events that shaped Ashe's quiet determination to 'use what he had to do what he could.'
