Idiot box thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Another gadget for cord-cutters. USB TV antenna with tuner software. Not much real utility, probably, except for watching TV on your computer outside or away somewhere, but it's not expensive either.

I remember when tv's were like a piece of furniture, as were stereo sets. I also remember when the first remote controls came out. It was back when everybody agreed on what was true and what wasn't.....the good old days.

I'm not saying it was the last non-remote control TV ever in the world, but in about 1983 I did buy the last one in the Circuit City store, and the last one I ever saw for sale new again. Back then, though, it didn't matter much that the TV was non-remote control because the cable service came with a remote controller. It was wired to the TV and you changed channels by pushing buttons on the tiny console. I think that set lasted probably 15 years before being killed in a lightning surge that fried a surge protector. There was a VCR attached that survived the attack unscathed, though.

This is the one I remember as a kid. The buttons were connected to a striker that hit a tuning bar that triggered a motor that turned the channel knob.

I dimly remember seeing one of those at a friend's house in the early 60's. It was treated very gingerly, and as I recall, the kids there were not supposed to touch it.

We just had an old portable Zenith TV, black and white, manual tuner. When it worked.

Tonight:
Dame Judi Dench, Jamie Dornan, Salma Hayek, British rapper Tinie Tempah; Jesy Nelson performs her latest single, and Barack Obama, Bruce Springsteen!

Good drugs were needed to make it out of the 70's.

I'm so glad I have no memory of this.

You probably repressed the trauma of it.

Biographers have IDed this as the absolute low point of Smokey Robinson's life. Gee, I wonder why only 9 episodes were ever aired?

I think the whole Brady Bunch tv show would have been better if the whole family were in a coma in different hospitals while the maid stayed at the house and threw massive drinking parties for the neighborhood kids every night.

But I still think the best thing I ever saw on tv was when the Iraqi journalist threw his shoes at Bush during a press conference. And it saddens me greatly that nobody ever did this sort of thing to trump, but using hand grenades instead of shoes.

Metaphorically, that does describe the show ;) . For example, as far as we can tell the only folks actually having sex are the "dating" Alice and Sam. The butcher always gets the meat.

Eli Roth's History of Horror (Movies)

I'm not even a huge fan of the horror genre, but I find this series to be well made, informative and fascinating.
