Every crisis brings out victims that you never knew of or even imagined exist. Originally a children's backyard game, pickleball is essentially tennis with a wiffle ball.

didn't know that it had a name - we had a badminton net and a small baseball diamond in the back yard. The badminton games often evolved to include whiffle balls and bats.

Obviously I was joking somewhat, although their in-person attendance really has been way down. But it still takes a pretty big crowd of competitor teams to put on their show.

When the limit on crowd size gets under 500, 200 or so, it's hard to keep anything much going. And it's not just the effect on sports and spectators, either. There was a "three-day-run" scheduled for this weekend here that raised money for charities. Last year there were 2,500 competitors and $110,000 raised for area charities. The TPC, cancelled this weekend at Ponte Vedra FL, was expected to raise close to $10 mill for 300 charities in NE Florida, up from $9 mill last year. Sports events will return, but that charity money's not coming back.

Sports today on CBS, Fox, ESPN and FoxSports included re-run college basketball, re-run NFL games, dodgeball, boxing and "wrestling" re-runs, cherry-pit spitting (for real!), re-run arm wrestling championship from 2016, re-run eating championships (brats and burgers), re-run X Games, and dick-measuring contests. (OK, I made the last one up, but the others were really on TV)
