Kelly might shoulda asked himself "what would Saban do" since that's who he's getting evaluated by. I'm not usually in favor of the "win or lose" two point attempt, with an overall average of about 43% successful, but in this case he's got a weak kicker and a legend to live up to/create. Not off to a good start.
I would have guessed higher than 43% and some folks say a little bit higher, but not by much. This article says the SEC extra point success rate is around 97%. So, that creates an 86 to 97 per point ratio, advantage kick. However, at the end of regular time the odds of winning with a kick are cut in half by the 50-50 odds of winning in OT - 48.5%, pretty close to the 43% with the 2 point try. In general, a coach will then consider factors that give one team an edge in OT, but the game so far doesn't indicate there are any and he could be wrong. In specific, LSU's kicking game struggles so far probably took the odds well south of 48.5%. So, I still think the right call was going for 2, but not with as much certainty as at first.

I found this while googling:

Should You Run or Pass When Going For Two?

It's for the NFL but the data says 57.14% success rate for rushes, 45.18% for passes. Have you seen this article, Pete? :D Pete wasn't alone, though. The article says that passes are attempted a lot more often. Weird. Idk if the same ratio holds true for college ball, but if it does an LSU rush try would have had well better than that 43% chance.
Those odds are based on all attempts. Factor in the specifics of this game and Kelly's decision becomes even more super dumbererer.

They were down 14 with 4 minutes left in the game.
They had the game momentum, the Home Field momentum, a loud crazy cajun crowd and had made the vital last 2 touchdowns in that 4 minutes.

Mo rarely lasts forever or through lengthy stopped play, or transitions to tie breaker from regular game.
Their kicking game had been poor.

A successful point after kick tie leaves them facing, in extended play after play, a team that has mostly beat them all night long. They probably lose.
They also lose (lost) with an unsuccessful kick.
Pretty much a lose/lose scenario.

Or

Sustaining the Mo for one more play wins the game.
There's always THAT perfect last crucial play somewhere in the playbook.

To me the choice seems simple and his chosen path inexplicable.

I never watch the teams he has coached, but he has a great resume. Still, this loss is all on him.

I hear that he publicly blamed his kicker. If true, he's even the worserist of all the worser college coaches.

(Please, please, please, don't let Auburn give him truck loads of money)

Could be. Here he blames blocking, apparently without taking responsibility for his own poor decision:

Kelly said he thought the kick would be a "higher percentage" for success, despite already having two field goals blocked and a freshman kicker playing his first game. Opps. 'Hawks send condolences.

Kelly has a very successful record at some good places, including being the all-time winningnest coach at ND, but great coaches don't throw their players under the bus for a loss past saying something general like "we need to play better on defense..." or "we've seen several things we need to work on this week..." etc. Sure, the kicker may have been a split second late or a millimeter off and the blocker may have muffed his assignment, but the play caller without doubt shares responsibility. Kelly is pathetic.

GO Ducks! Best game of the day? Definite Playoff implications.

Crap, 3-49
Ouch, Georgia knocks Oregon out of AP poll entirely, now (#26).
https://sports.yahoo.com/college-football/rankings/
That seems a little uncalled for. The #11 Ducks were supposed to lose to #3 (now #2).

Crap, the only Top 10 team I like at all is #8 Notre Dame, and I'm not a huge fan of it. Go #18 North Carolina State.

Yeah, Notre Dame is OK. Michigan has one of the best fight/touchdown songs ever, but somewhat of an asshole for a coach and a generally ob-nax-yus population. Love to hear it when they score, though.

"somewhat"? Among other things he's an outspoken women's freedom-denying misogynist. Strange that his brother seems to be a decent guy.

Michigan sched:
Colorado St (W 51 - 7)
Hawaii 0-2 tomorrow
Connecticut 1-1, Sep 17
Then conference play beginning with my Maryland 1-0, Sat, Sep 24

I always though that Wolverines were weasels, not pussies.

Full disclosure. Maryland begins with buttercups Buffalo (W 31 - 10)
and Charlotte 0-2 tomorrow
However, it then challenges itself with SMU 1-0 on Sat, Sep 17

Turtles aren't weasels or pussies.

No, his is Eastern Tennessee. Maaaybe also another school like Tennessee. I got the impression that ETSU was for a limited time.

billy.pilgrim has family in central TN, don't know about any MTSU connections, though.

10-10 at the half and Texas left some points on the table, a moral victory whatever happens in the 2nd.

Edit: 10-16 (21-point underdog) Texas 2 minutes into the 4th, already a moral stomping. But, Texas is playing with a hobbled backup QB.

Edit: FG good! 17-19 Texas with 1:34 left. :wtf:

Final edit: Crap, 20-19. :angry-banghead: :angry-banghead: :angry-banghead:

Well, sometimes things don't turn out like you expected.

3-0 actually. Remember Florida A&M?

Gravy boat probably ends next week with Notre Dame.

How 'bout 'dem Terps!

And App State is hanging in with Aggies. Woohoo.

Opps. :-|| Their narrow win over App St looks better after today.

The former #8 Notre Dame? I don't hate Marshall, but it's sad to lose the one team I sorta like in the Top 10.

Meh, vs Charlotte. SMU @ College Park next week, though . . .

17-14 @ 18.5 point favorite #6 Texas A&M!!!
:happy-cheerleaderkid:
