Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Crews search for California fire victims as list of missing passes 600

Oh crap.

Dear Resisters,

We’re so excited to announce our next teach-in in our Forgotten Conflict series. After a powerful talk by Hafsa Kanjwal, Mohamad Junaid, and Amin Hussain on Kashmir’s occupation, our next topic is Militarized Disaster Response, with case studies from the Philippines and Puerto Rico. It will be at WRL’s office at 168 Canal St, New York, NY, on Dec. 8th from 3 pm to 5 pm. We’d love to see you there.

As climate change continues to accelerate, the military and private mercenaries have become more involved in response efforts to disasters. While the US and other governments refuse to do anything meaningful to stop climate change, they use increasing conflict over water, widespread flooding or fires, and desertification to justify the deployment of militaries and mercenaries. We know that people of color and indigenous communities face the bulk of impacts from climate change, and also face the majority of imperialist, militarized repression in the world.

From Blackwater deploying into post-Katrina New Orleans, to prisoners in California fighting wildfires, to the US Military using disaster relief as a justification for increased presence in the Philippines, to private military contractors patrolling the streets of Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria, the relationship between increasing militarization of our planet and climate change receives very little mainstream coverage. We’re pleased to be hosting speakers from the International Committee on Human Rights in the Philippines (ICHRP) and A Call To Action on Puerto Rico, discussing how humanitarian disaster relief is used as a cover for increasing US military presence, and the worrying trend of civilian disaster response agencies contracting with mercenaries. In the drive to deal with the fallout of climate change, militarization can only exacerbate environmental racism.

The US military is the largest polluter on the planet. Climate change is tied up in neo-colonialism and resource extraction that the Pentagon is tasked with defending. Puerto Rico and the Philippines both serve vital economic and geostrategic purposes for the US, which contributes to the US continuing to undermine movements for climate justice and decolonization. Come to WRL and hear from our amazing guests what their communities are asking folks in the anti-militarization and climate justice movements to mobilize around!

Much love,

ICHRP, A Call to Action on PR, and WRL
Interesting. I have seen some of this personally.

Camp Fire Leaves At Least 77 Dead While Almost 1,300 Remain Unaccounted For

The number "missing" keeps growing, not shrinking.

Camp Fire (2018)

... After exhibiting extreme fire behavior, an urban firestorm formed in the densely populated foothill town of Paradise. The fire caused at least 86 civilian fatalities, injured 12 civilians and 5 firefighters, covered an area of 153,336 acres (62,053 ha), and destroyed 18,804 structures, with most of the damage occurring within the first four hours. As of November 19, insured damage was estimated to be $7.5–10 billion. The fire reached 100 percent containment after seventeen days on November 25, 2018.

Still tragic, but was looking like it could have been far worse.

Tsunami triggered by volcano sweeps Indonesia beach; 62 dead

A tsunami apparently caused by the eruption of an island volcano killed at least 62 people around Indonesia's Sunda Strait, sending a wall of water crashing some 65 feet (20 meters) inland and sweeping away hundreds of houses including hotels, the government and witnesses said.

Some 600 people have been reported injured when the tsunami hit 9:27 p.m. Saturday, the Disaster Management Agency said. At least 20 others are unaccounted for.

Scientists from Indonesia's Meteorology and Geophysics agency said it could have been caused by undersea landslides from the eruption of Anak Krakatau, a volcanic island formed over years from the nearby Krakatau volcano. They also cited tidal waves caused by the full moon.

Footage posted on social media showed a pop band named "Seventeen" performing under a tent on a beach as dozens of people sat listening at tables covered in white cloths. As bright strobe lights flashed on stage, a child could be seen wandering through the crowd. Then, in between songs with the drummer pounding, the stage suddenly heaved forward, throwing the band and all their equipment into the audience.

The band released a statement saying their bass player and road manager were found dead, while four other members of their group remained missing.

Tourists were also affected during the holiday weekend ahead of Christmas.

"I had to run, as the wave passed the beach and landed 15-20m (meters) inland," Norwegian Øystein Lund Andersen wrote on Facebook....

"Actually, the tsunami was not really big, only one meter," said Prasetya, who has closely studied Krakatau. "The problem is people always tend to build everything close to the shoreline." ...
Weather Channel in an unrelated flash flood program says that water traveling at 10 mph has the force of a 270 mph wind.

That sucks to get killed by such a "small" tsunami that struck after dark without any warning.

Edit:
222 dead as volcano-triggered tsunami hits Indonesia

... Hundreds of buildings were destroyed by the wave ...

... 222 people confirmed dead, 843 people injured and 28 missing, Nugroho said.

Tsunamis triggered by volcanic eruptions are relatively rare, caused by the sudden displacement of water or "slope failure", according to the International Tsunami Information Centre.

Unlike those caused by earthquakes, which trigger alert systems, they give authorities very little time to warn residents of the impending threat....

Kathy Mueller from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said the toll was likely to rise as the conditions on the ground became clearer....

"it’s urgent that we continue the rescue missions. Last year saw more deaths on the Mediterranean than in 2017. Roughly one out of every five people who try to get to Europe in one of these boats dies. That’s enormous. It’s total chaos. But people would rather risk the sea – even if they don’t know how to swim – than staying in Libya."

"The Aquarius has had to end its operations and they are looking for another boat, because the situation in Libya is not improving and the dangerous departures from there continue – yet testimonies of this are almost completely absent from the central Mediterranean. Let us hope that this new year gives rise to other decisions from the European states, and to a re-consideration of the richness of intercultural exchange."

There but by the grace of god, twist of fate or just plain dumb fucking luck, go I.

Or as trump, republicans and often our own leo see it, - it's all their own fault. These illegal people should have made better decisions. After all, we are all self-made individuals who built our lives independent of our surroundings - Sarah plain and simple and Joe the Plumber told us so.
Trump: “We had the safest border in the history of our country - or at least recorded history. I guess maybe a thousand years ago it was even better.”

Faucets cracked, beef stroganoff made, dog walked (I can't believe it, but he's loving this weather, but it was a balmy 3° today with a mere -20° wind chill, we'll see how tough he is tomorrow!) and no work scheduled until Friday. Bring it on!❄

Woman who called Michelle Obama an 'ape in heels' pleads guilty to FEMA fraud

The West Virginia woman who grabbed national headlines in (Nov.) 2016 for calling Michelle Obama an "ape" has pleaded guilty to embezzling thousands of dollars in federal disaster relief.

Pamela Taylor, 57, admitted to authorities last week that she falsely registered for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) disaster benefits after a deadly 1,000-year flood event in Clay County, West Virginia, in June 2016. Taylor had claimed that her primary residence was damaged by the floodwaters and that she was forced to stay in a rental property.

But Taylor's home was actually not damaged and she still lived there. She received more than $18,000 in FEMA benefits after submitting the fraudulent application, according to a press release from the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of West Virginia....

During her plea agreement hearing last Tuesday, Taylor agreed to pay restitution of $18,149.04. She is scheduled to be sentenced on May 30. She faces up to 30 years behind bars and a fine of up to $500,000....

Taylor was placed on leave from her position as director of the Clay County Development Corporation in November 2016 after posting a controversial comment about then-first lady Michelle Obama on social media.

"It will be refreshing to have a classy, beautiful, dignified First Lady in the White House. I'm tired of seeing a Ape in heels," Taylor wrote on Facebook after Election Day.

Clay County Mayor Beverly Whaling liked Taylor's Facebook post and commented, "Just made my day Pam."

Both women apologized publicly, and Whaling subsequently submitted a letter announcing her resignation, according to ABC affiliate WCHS in Charleston, West Virginia.
:happy-cheerleaderkid:

Pamela Taylor is no beauty queen, herself, and they won't let her wear heels in prison.
