I came across this story today and I think it's a great explanation of the "debt ceiling" idiocy. The significant concept is the fact that the only other country that has a "debt ceiling" is Denmark and that ceiling is set so high that it won't be reached for decades. Ours is a self inflicted nonsensical restriction that is over a hundred years old. The story also points out who the Democrats that are threatening to vote against raising it are, and why they're doing so. Hint; it has to do with their opposition to lowering drug prices. A very instructive article, as well as a disgusting one.

Yeah, a fine example of why nothing will change for the better unless and until corporate lobbying is made illegal. It's nothing more than outright bribery in a six hundred dollar suit or dress. There should be no donations to ANY politician other than donations from individual constituents who are "represented" by those politicians. I sure do wish there would be a groundswell of public support for eliminating this long term continual travesty.

For 85 minutes today a woman held presidential powers for the first time ever (officially, no disrespect to Edith Wilson, née Bolling). It was glorious.

Biden clears way for investigators to obtain Trump’s Jan. 6 White House visitor logs

President Joe Biden has rejected Donald Trump’s effort to assert executive privilege over White House visitor logs from Jan. 6, 2021, ordering the National Archives to deliver the documents to congressional investigators in two weeks.

“As a matter of policy, and subject to limited exceptions, the Biden Administration voluntarily discloses such visitor logs on a monthly basis. The Obama Administration followed the same practice,” White House Counsel Dana Remus said in a letter to National Archivist David Ferriero dated Feb. 15.

“The majority of the entries over which the former President has asserted executive privilege would be publicly released under current policy,” Remus wrote. “As practice under that policy demonstrates, preserving the confidentiality of this type of record generally is not necessary to protect long-term institutional interests of the Executive Branch.”

The decision to reject Trump’s effort to assert executive privilege over those logs is the latest move by Biden to support the investigation of the House Jan. 6 select committee probing Trump’s effort to subvert the 2020 election — and the violent riot at the Capitol that ensued when his effort failed.

Biden has already rejected a string of executive privilege claims over other Trump White House materials, like briefing memos, speech drafts and call records stretching from April 2020 to Jan. 20, 2021. Trump previously sued to prevent the Archives from disclosing the documents to Congress, but he lost a series of court battles, including before the Supreme Court, that resulted in hundreds of pages being delivered to the select committee....

According to the National Archives, one of Trump’s rejected privilege assertions included 46 pages of “daily presidential diaries, schedules, appointments showing White House visitors, activity logs, call logs, and switchboard shift-change checklists showing phone calls to the President and Vice President, all specifically for or encompassing January 6, 2021.”

Did any of you watch the SOTU? What did you think?
Ukrainian parliament member says Biden’s SOTU was ‘a total disappointment’ for Ukraine

A member of Ukraine's parliament called President Joe Biden's State of the Union speech "a total disappointment" on TODAY Wednesday, as she called for a no-fly zone to protect her country from Russian airstrikes....
She and others talk about a no-fly zone as is this was Syria or Libya. In reality, they are calling for an escalation to a full scale air war between NATO and Russia, and all of its predictable and unpredictable consequences.

Do any of you think we should go that route? I don't.

Caught parts. Solid but didn't knock it out of the park. Bipartisan support on Ukraine was actually surprising. Mostly safe and center but this really isn't the time to be too progressive.

Greene and Boebert made fools of themselves.

Can't go that route, direct combat between u.s. and Russian forces has no possible good ending. The Russian doctrine on nuclear weapons is not the same as ours. Tactical usage and first strike usage are part of their battle plans.

Ironically, this makes half of what NATO does rather fruitless.

No first use

No first use (NFU) refers to a pledge or a policy by a nuclear power not to use nuclear weapons as a means of warfare unless first attacked by an adversary using nuclear weapons. This concept is also applied to chemical and biological warfare in case of the NFU policy of India.

NATO has repeatedly rejected calls for adopting NFU policy. During the lifetime of the Soviet Union it argued that pre-emptive nuclear strike is a key option, in order to have a credible deterrent that could compensate for the overwhelming conventional weapon superiority enjoyed by the Soviet Army in the Eurasian land mass. In 1993, Russia dropped a pledge against first use of nuclear weapons made in 1982 by Leonid Brezhnev.
The US and NATO refused to join in. Instead, we deployed Pershing and cruise missiles to Europe - hugely controversial at the time and eventually removed by treaty.
In 2000, a Russian military doctrine stated that Russia reserves the right to use nuclear weapons "in response to a large-scale conventional aggression".

Countries against no-first-use policy

Pakistan, Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States, and France say that they will use nuclear weapons against either nuclear or non-nuclear states only in the case of invasion or other attack against their territory or against one of their allies. Historically, NATO military strategy, taking into account the numerical superiority of Warsaw Pact conventional forces, assumed that tactical nuclear weapons would have to be used to defeat a Soviet invasion.

At the 16th NATO summit in April 1999, Germany proposed that NATO adopt a no-first-use policy, but the proposal was rejected.

Russia ...

United Kingdom ...

United States

The United States has refused to adopt a no first use policy and says that it "reserves the right to use" nuclear weapons first in the case of conflict. The US doctrine for the use of nuclear weapons was revised most recently in the Nuclear Posture Review, released April 6, 2010. The 2010 Nuclear Posture review reduces the role of U.S. nuclear weapons, "The fundamental role of U.S. nuclear weapons, which will continue as long as nuclear weapons exist, is to deter nuclear attack on the United States, our allies, and partners." ...

In August 2016, President Barack Obama reportedly considered adopting a 'No First Use' policy. Obama was persuaded by several Cabinet officials that 'No First Use' would rattle U.S. allies and decided not to take up the policy.

In 2017, there were efforts to either require congressional approval for a pre-emptive nuclear strike or to ban it altogether and impose an NFU policy.
Thanks for nothing, Barack.

I didn't watch it; just decided to wait until the next morning to read about it.
As for the US establishing and enforcing a no fly zone in Ukraine, it would be crazy and only result in more destruction. Besides, that ship has already sailed since there was not a "no tanks and soldiers on trains or roads" zone before this happened.
