... Gaetz then appeared on Tucker Carlson's Fox News program to repeat his denials that the story in the Times was true.

"It is a horrible allegation and it is a lie," Gaetz said. "The New York Times is running a story that I have traveled with a 17-year-old woman and that is verifiably false. People can look at my travel records and see that that is not the case."

Yet Carlson maintained a measure of skepticism about Gaetz's claims that the allegations against him were part of an elaborate extortion plot.

"If you just saw our Matt Gaetz interview... that was one of the weirdest interviews I've ever conducted," Carlson said, adding, "I don't think that clarified much."

The fast-moving developments left more questions than answers about one of the most high-profile Republican politicians in the country. Not lost in the fray is the fact that, in December, Gaetz announced his engagement to 26-year-old Ginger Luckey.

... The investigation into Gaetz stems from a broader investigation into former Seminole County Tax Collector Joel Greenberg, one of Gaetz's political allies in Florida, the sources told The Times.

In August 2020, Greenberg was indicted on fourteen counts, including sex trafficking charges related to a minor between the age of 14 and 17.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, prosecutors allege that Greenberg used his access as an elected official to seek information on women via the Florida Driver and Vehicle Information Database and engage relationships with them.

Greenberg has denied all allegations and charges, and his trial is set for mid-June. Greenberg and Gaetz have been pictured at several political events together, including at the White House during the Trump administration in 2019.

To be fair, I had a 17 year old girlfriend when I was 21 - not a creepy 38. I don't think we crossed state lines before she turned 18, but we broke some other laws and I doubt that I would have hesitated to go out of state. Then again, maybe the sex trafficking laws have changed in 40+ years and I wasn't in Congress.

Luke Ball, Gaetz's communications director, tendered his resignation hours after the New York Times released a second bombshell story detailing cash payments that Gaetz, a Florida Republican and close political ally of former President Donald Trump, made to several women, apparently in exchange for sex.

An ongoing Justice Department investigation is looking into whether Gaetz, 38, had sex with a 17-year-old girl and provided her with anything of value in return. Federal child sex trafficking law prohibits providing anything of value to someone under the age of 18 in exchange for sex.

The Times was shown the records of payments made by Gaetz to a woman on two mobile apps, the paper reported Thursday, but the documented sexual encounters at Florida hotels extended to multiple women who, according to the Times, told friends they were paid for their services.

Gaetz associate Joel Greenberg, a former Florida tax collector, was indicted last year for multiple crimes, including sex-trafficking the same 17-year-old girl who may have been involved with Gaetz. He is also involved in the payments allegedly made to the women in exchange for sex....

With scrutiny of Gaetz growing by the moment, CNN reported late Thursday that he had often boasted of his sexual conquests to other members of Congress, sometimes going so far as to show off naked photos and videos while on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives of women he had slept with.

While serving in the Florida Legislature, Gaetz and other male lawmakers were known to have made a game out of their sexual conquests, establishing a scoring system for those who had sex with women they considered targets, including interns and colleagues, the Miami Herald reported.
