We'll never get rid of no-knock warrants entirely and maybe shouldn't, but one reasonable reform would be to require some minimal prior surveillance before executing them.
Why shouldn't no-knock warrants be banned? They don't have to knock gently; they certainly could yell from outside the door, but how can one possibly justify a resident in his own house, with a legal gun, shooting someone who is inside his house and just broke in? Without prior notice, how could he possibly know it was cops, and even if they said they were cops, how would he know immediately they really were? Fundamental principles in home defence - if they're outside the house, get your gun but hold your fire; if they're inside the house, fire away.
Why is it that basic common sense is lacking in both of these scenarios?

A North Carolina State Highway Patrol trooper has died after being struck by a vehicle driven by his brother, also a trooper, while the two were responding to a traffic stop, authorities say. The detained driver involved in the traffic stop, later identified as Dusty Luke Beck, was also killed....
The Trooper collided with the stationary patrol vehicle and struck Trooper John Horton and Beck, who were both standing along the roadside....
There has been no information released about why Beck was pulled over or what the conditions were at the time of the crash....
I will guess that the reason why "there has been no information released about why Beck was pulled over...." is because the state is not very proud of the fact that they've now lost one trooper, possibly two trooper cars, and a citizen all because of an inoperative tail light or something hanging from the mirror of Beck's car or some other asinine reason. It just makes for a bad equation.

I figured this whole episode was under the influence of improper influence just because the brother called for backup (he must have been skeered) and once the backup arrived and then went off the rails into the non paved surface, he totally fucked up. After all, it's hard to make a sudden stop on grass or dirt at anything over about 30mph. I predict no charges for the brother just from sympathy and corruption. 50% sympathy, 50% corruption. In this case they go hand in hand. I would't be surprised if posthumous awards are not forthcoming. That's how they roll.
