Why didn't they just say "NBA, WNBA" like they did in your paragraph?

It's kind of poorly written.

How difficult is it to write WNBA and NBA as opposed to (W)NBA?

Also, I'm pretty sure the proper way to write their lazy stupidity is 'W/NBA', just like 's/he'. I don't believe that '(s)he' is ever done.

I think it's different. "s/he" means "she OR he, whichever gender applies." In their use, it would have not been OR, but AND, or at least a comma. Poor word-ish choice, blatant though possibly unconscious disrespect for the womens' game.
