One doesn't get to write - or see - this very often, so I thought I better post it before it goes away:
Padres are tied with the mighty Dodgers for first place in the NL West, and with the second-most wins in the National League, behind the Mets.

This season, that has continued. The Cubs don’t have one batter hitting over .250 and third baseman Kris Bryant is their best hitter who is batting just .243. Other players like shortstop Javier Baez, first baseman Anthony Rizzo and outfielders Ian Happ and Joc Pederson are all hitting .200 or below.

Also, the Cubs broke a record for the least amount of hits in a team’s first 10 games. Chicago only had 49 hits through their first 10 games which broke the previous low (51) in 1968.

Now, the Cubs must find a way to get out of this hitting slump. They have not scored more than five runs in any game and have scored less than two runs in five games. Hitting seems to be the Cubs’ biggest downfall to start the season. They need to get out of it or else the Cubs can find themselves at the bottom of the NL Central.

The AL West cellar-dwelling A's, 15-22, have lost 2 and though they have a very slightly better percentage they are now 0 games ahead of your Cubs, 13-20, who have won 2. Who would have guessed? Oh, that's right, almost everybody.

The A's play the winning Twins while the Cubs play the hapless Pirates and could take the irrelevant lead in this loser race.

Go Padres, 22-13, Cubs AND A's!

The Padres have the day off while the Dodgers play so-so AZ.

Someone is conveniently forgetting that the Cubs actually have a worse average than the A's.

Plus the only team in the NLC worse than the Cubs is not the A's, but the Cincinatti Reds, who have a very low average. Were it not for the Reds, the Cubs would be cellar dwellers.

Cubs: 13/20 .384
Reds: 9/25 .257

A's: 15/22 .405

In other words, the Cubs suck more than the A's.

The Dodgers won, 22-12. Slightly better percentage than the Padres - .647 vs .629 - and they are now 1/2 game ahead. :(

The Cubs won, 14-20. The A's lost, 15-23.The Cubs are now a game ahead of the A's and their percentage is better - .412 vs .395. Worse than the Cubs, how humiliating!

Ouch, the middle of May, cellar dwellers, nine games back and packing their bags for Vegas. I guess they suck and it sucks to be an A's fan these days.

A's fan loyalty seems to be dropping like a rock, from what I read. I'm not a huge baseball fan, and my interest in the A's is only from the standpoint of entertainment from the city/team/fan dysfunction. Living in a city where the Chargers had a very strong fan base, good years and bad, loyal fans and some might say rabid; with a decent sometimes-good team; yet the asshole owner moved up to LA. You see other stories about team moves and the effect on their cities and fans, but when you look at the A's it's hard to understand why they'd stay there at all - or for that matter why any city not totally desperate for a team would want them. Management is awful, the fans are perpetually mad and now mostly don't show up, and the city isn't offering much real help.

Some fair-weather A's fans have even magically switched their allegiance to the Giants.

I've read the start of the downslide was the (real) Moneyball and that overall approach to running a low-budget team. Don't know the history of the team before then, though, and that was 20 years ago. They've had some good years since then, however, so maybe it's just crappy fan-deaf management.

Two best baseball movies ever.

Field of Dreams

Bull Durham

If I'm not mistaken, Kevin Costner made them back to back.
