I don't think all "conservatives" are any more homogeneous than "the libs" that are such terrors to the right are. Further, I don't think those who have hijacked the name "conservative" are any more authentic than those who call themselves "Muslim" and join Al Qaeda are. But those who are most vocal about their "conservationism" do create and live in a world of their own. It's a scary world, too. Basically the same world that primitive tribes live in - one where outsiders or anyone different is a threat. Where superstitions are more powerful than reason and those who cast doubt are seen as heretics. Where reliance on the past is strong because they don't have the abilities and adaptive skills to handle change. Case studies are abundant, such as how Amish do when they jump the rez. Even though they want "out" they tend to seek out each other and have a hard time adapting to "English" life. It's a life of constant fear, constant suspicion, constant frustration and anger. Not really I life I'd like.

Conservatives are usually mostly in touch with reality, but most of these folks
aren't conservatives, they're wingnuts, which is a different thing. There is
some overlap, but the nutters are the ones that specialize in nonsensical
fantasy worlds, as anyone with a touch of common sense can see. Why the
stupid? I don't think they are all idiots, so I'm guessing that their poltical views
have gradually taken over any of the smarts they orginally had. Yes, a mind is
a terrrible thing to waste (for that person), but entertaining for the rest of us.
