The LEO thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

It's a shame that stupid lies aren't crimes, Uncle Tim.
Republican Fact-Checked About Crime Under Joe Biden During Interview

Senator Tim Scott, a South Carolina Republican, was fact-checked by ABC News' This Week host Jonathan Karl on Sunday when he claimed that violent crime has seen the "greatest increase" under President Joe Biden's tenure.

During the interview, Karl asked Scott about his views on the Supreme Court's recent decision to strike down a federal ban on bump stocks, which allows some guns to fire more rapidly. Scott shared his respect for the Court's decision, but quickly shifted the focus to the issue of violent crime and said, "Under Joe Biden, we've seen the greatest increase in violent crime in my lifetime."

However, Karl promptly corrected the senator, pointing out that the latest statistics on violent crime and murder rates show a decrease over the past year. "Actually, Senator, as you probably know, the latest stats on violent crime and on the murder rate, they're actually down this past year," Karl said....

... A study published by Poynter last month found that official data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), although lagging, shows an overall decrease in violent crime during Biden's presidency. In a speech at a national police memorial service in May, Biden stated, "It's no accident that violent crime is near a record 50-year low."

Poynter's analysis of FBI data, compiled by analyst Jeff Asher of AH Datalytics, confirmed that Biden's statement is accurate. The violent crime rate, which comprises homicide, rape, robbery, and aggravated assault, peaked in 1991 and has been falling since, with a few upward blips, notably during the COVID-19 pandemic (TRE45QN admin).

Using two different 50-year time spans, the study found that the 2022 violent crime rate of just under 370 per 100,000 residents is indeed near the lowest levels in the past five decades....

Criminologists and experts have weighed in on the findings, with Northeastern University criminologist James Alan Fox telling the Tampa Bay Times earlier this month, "Biden's statement about violent crime is absolutely true. Despite a spike in murder in 2020 amidst the emergence of COVID (TRE45QN admin), even homicides have declined."...
Opps.

Video: Bike-Borne Robbers Attempt To Rob Woman In Argentina, Get Dose Of Instant Karma

Opps.
... In the video, one of the bike-borne muggers is seen dismounting off the bike and moving towards the victim. The woman quickly turns and draws her service weapon and then fires three shots.

The first bullet struck the approaching mugger who collapsed immediately.

The policewoman, now on the ground, swiftly focused towards the other mugger, still on his bike.

The shooting stopped the robbery attempt and forced the muggers to flee and the policewoman escaped without injuries.

The thieves were arrested later when they visited a nearby hospital to seek treatment for gunshot wounds. One of the muggers arrived at the Iriarte Hospital. Cops arrested him after he matched the description of the attackers.

Hours later, staff at the Almirante Brown reported that another male with a minor wound on his left arm had been admitted to Oñativia Hospital in Rafael Calzada.
They'll be the laughingstocks of the prison.

Minneapolis, worst PD in the nation?
Journalist On Death Bed After Police Shot Her With ‘Non-Lethal’ Bullets
Linda Tirado lost her eye when Minneapolis police shot her with a foam bullet in 2020. Now, she’s dying from dementia, the National Press Club says.

A freelance photojournalist who lost her eye when police shot her with a foam bullet in 2020 is now receiving end-of-life care as a result of that injury. A professional journalism organization shared this week.

Linda Tirado, 42, “is at life’s end and receiving palliative care,” the National Press Club said in a release, because the strike to her face also caused a traumatic brain injury and corresponding dementia. Police struck her with the supposedly “non-lethal” bullet while she was covering the 2020 anti-racism protests in Minneapolis following the police murder of George Floyd.

“Tirado took all precautions trying to hold the line where police instructed, wearing protective goggles and mask against tear gas, which filled the air,” Emily Wilkins, president of the National Press Club, said. “During the chaotic action, officers aimed a gun firing ‘non-lethal’ foam plastic bullets at journalists including Tirado. The projectiles struck several journalists. Tirado was hit in the eye despite her protective goggles. She lost the eye.”...

Image
The photo Linda Tirado featured in her viral 2013 piece for HuffPost.

... “I will not regain sight in my left eye. I will need more surgeries. But I have not been crying for my lost vision; rather, it feels as though my body is reacting to what is happening to my country,” she wrote for The New Republic.

“I have lost half of my vision, but I lack no clarity: There can be no peace without justice, and no justice without full-throated, damningly righteous anger,” she continued. “I am asked over and over again why are people burning and looting, and I wonder what anyone thinks they would do if they spent their whole lives being told they were lesser than and not equal, and then one day they woke up to a police state.”

Tirado also contributed to HuffPost in 2013 and 2014. A piece she wrote entitled "This Is Why Poor People’s Bad Decisions Make Perfect Sense" went viral, and the discussion it sparked about poverty and pregnancy remains relevant today as GOP lawmakers slash access to reproductive care and skewer women’s decision-making. In a follow-up piece, she referred to herself as “the woman who accidentally explained poverty to the nation.”

The National Press Club honored Tirado with its John Aubuchon Press Freedom Award in 2020 following her shooting.

A $600,000 settlement she received from the Minneapolis Police Department was largely absorbed by her medical bills, which continue to accrue, the National Press Club said, and her inability to work or earn an income following the shooting has put immense financial pressure on her family.

My condolences. But you have to admit there's always an exception to any rule. When I was in my first house in NC the next door neighbor was a former FL deputy who retired. His son became a NC state trooper. At the time he was assigned to Polk County. His mane is McGraw so I hope he wasn't the one you are talking about. My best effort was with the Buncombe County deputy who pulled me over one day for nothing. His name was David Allison. A true asshole. I won that battle. I'm sure that asshole is either retired or dead by new. But I'd sure enjoy seeing him again in case he forgot how I feel about him.

For example:
Prosecutors say they plan to retry Karen Read after mistrial declared in murder case
Read was charged with second-degree murder and other crimes in the 2022 death of John O'Keefe. Read's lawyers said she was framed by other officers.

... Her lawyers alleged that she was framed by officers who sought to conceal a beating that they said O’Keefe suffered during a gathering at the home where his body was found.

The defense alleged that the lead investigator in the case, Massachusetts state Trooper Michael Proctor, manipulated evidence, failed to properly investigate O’Keefe’s death and sent a series of slurs and vulgar messages about Read to friends, family and supervisors....

Read's lawyers were allowed to present a third-party culprit defense — a theory of O'Keefe's death that differed from the prosecution's — and they pointed to an agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives who'd traded flirtatious texts with Read as a possible suspect in O'Keefe's death.

Jackson suggested the agent, Brian Higgins, became angry after Read ignored him at a bar before the gathering at Albert's home. At Albert's house, Jackson said, there could have been skirmish between Higgins and O'Keefe over Read that could have ended with O'Keefe falling and hitting his head....
I haven't followed this case very closely, but know enough that this mistrial is a huge humiliation for LEOs and prosecutors.

The family and allies are still bird dogging him:
Officer who fatally shot Tamir Rice resigns from police department in West Virginia amid public outrage
Tamir Rice was playing with a pellet gun outside a recreation center in Cleveland on Nov. 22, 2014, when he was shot and killed by Timothy Loehmann.

... Timothy Loehmann had been hired to work as a probationary police officer and an at-will employee for the city of White Sulphur Springs in southeastern West Virginia, Mayor Kathy Glover said in a statement to NBC News on Monday announcing his resignation. White Sulpher Springs is about 370 miles from Cleveland and has a population of roughly 2,220....

This is the second time Loehmann has resigned from a police department since he left Cleveland....

Tamir, who was Black, was playing with a pellet gun outside a recreation center in Cleveland on Nov. 22, 2014, when he was shot and killed by Loehmann seconds after Loehmann and his then-partner, a veteran training officer, arrived....

The shooting sparked months of protests over police treatment of Black people. A state grand jury decided not to indict Loehmann or Garmback. In May 2017, about three years after he killed Tamir, Loehmann was fired by the Cleveland Police Department, which said his 2013 application contained inaccuracies....

... He has twice before left jobs at small police departments. In 2022, he resigned from a position with the police department in Tioga, Pennsylvania, after his hiring drew backlash, his attorney Henry Hilow said at the time. And in 2018, he withdrew his application to become a part-time police officer in Bellaire, Ohio, the department’s police chief said then following protests from Tamir’s mother and others....

Cleveland settled a lawsuit with Tamir’s family for $6 million. There was no admission of wrongdoing in the settlement.

Subodh Chandra, an attorney who represented the estate of Tamir Rice and his family, said Loehmann should never again be entrusted with a badge and gun and questioned why he insists on working as a police officer.

“Timothy Loehmann should be radioactive to any sensible member of law enforcement or any community,” Chandra said.

'She Had Limited Value': Officer Caught Laughing About Grad Student Killed By A Cop Doing 74 In A 25
Officer Daniel Auderer said the city of Seattle should just "write a check" to the family of killed 23-year-old.

 :puke-left:

There will always be individual assholes, but the important question is why this pig was still on the streets:
... It’s being reported that Auderer has a history of trouble inside SPD. He was named in a range of civil cases and has been the subject of a number of complaints of misconduct, excess force and bias. Some of these situations include him being one of several officers who stopped two Mexican immigrants under false pretenses, him being part of a group beating of a mentally ill man (causing pertinent brain damage), and using force against a Black woman while she was handcuffed.

The Post reports that Seattle’s civilian-led Community Police Commission said the incident is an example of concerns they have “repeatedly raised about elements of Seattle Police Department culture and SPOG resistance to officer accountability measures including the landmark 2017 Police Accountability Ordinance.”

“The people of Seattle deserve better from a police department that is charged with fostering trust with the community and ensuring public safety,” the CPC said, according to the outlet....
The article doesn't say whether heartless Officer Daniel Auderer and murdering Officer Kevin Dave are still on the streets. 1312.

... The body-worn camera footage was provided to the King County Prosecutor’s Office as part of the fatality case, according to Rahr. The office announced in February it would not file criminal charges against Dave – whose patrol vehicle struck Kandula – saying it “lacks sufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Officer Kevin Dave was impaired by drugs or alcohol, driving in a reckless manner, or driving with disregard for the safety of others.”
... “Jaahnavi, a young soul full of dreams and hopes, came to the United States with the aspiration to pursue her master’s degree and be a beacon of support for her family,” the association said in a statement to its Seattle community and members. “Her future was a shining light, cruelly extinguished.”
