"The only difference in being in prison and in a ship at sea is the added danger of drowning." I think that quote was originally meant about a navy ship, not necessarily a super-luxurious cruise ship, but somehow it still seems appropriate when you imagine that if it's quarantined, you're not gonna be in the casino, the pool, or the bar, you're gonna be mostly in whatever accommodation you booked, which might even be an inside one without a porthole.

I'm in Budapest for a few days then off to Poland. Ive been having some interesting political conversations with people from different walks of life. The common thread between them all is "what the fuck is going on in the United States". The Canadian I spoke with on the train today said its hard to fathom any of its actually real. The kebab man I had a lengthy convo with yesterday expressed similar sentiments. Most are hopeful and optimistic that we'll come out the other end okay once this nightmare is over. I hope theyre right. One thing I can assure you of is we're certainly not "respected" again like the orange piece of shit likes to claim. But (most) of us here already knew that.

Re: Traveling
I figured foreigners pay8ng attention would be wondering wtf about the US lately. For a while I've been using an old Twight Zone line to describe it...."too incredible to be real; too real to be a nightmare." That pretty much covers it.I bet the folks in Greenland feel even more or that wtf stuff. Anyway, have a safe trip back and make sure you got your papers to get back in this coitus tub.Whack9 wrote: ↑Thu May 14, 2026 4:25 pmI'm in Budapest for a few days then off to Poland. Have you talked with anyone about the war in Ukraine? Poland might be a good place to do so.

I have not. The brick wall behind the Soviet monument in Vienna was painted with the colors of the Ukranian flag. I thought that was funny.
Not so fun fact: After this monument was built shortly after world war 2, Viennese would refer to it as the "monument to the unknown father" due to all of the rape perpetrated by soviet soldiers.
Behind the Soviet memorial here in Budapest is a statue of Ronald Reagon.

Are there any Zsa Zsa Gabor statues around there? I always liked it when she would be on the phone at the top of the telephone pole in the Green Acres tv show. The neighborhood I grew up in was named Green Acres. Before the tv show came along.

Re: Traveling
So we've been up at Mammoth since Tuesday and it's for the most part been a spectacular trip. Sunny skies, 60s, great scenery, snow on the mountains. Eastern California has some of the most diverse geological conditions in the world. We toured huge fissures from earthquakes, climbed up the rim of a volcano crater, sat out on the beach of June Lake, toured Mono Lake, an inland sea with 10 percent salt and crystal clear.
And then today it turned cold - it's 30 outside now and snowing lightly. Snow in the middle of may. Anyway, we head toward home tomorrow. Can't believe we waited this long to visit the Eastern Sierras - it's eye-boggling.

Re: Traveling
Depends on what you mean by "there." Around Mammoth Lakes, its high because its a major ski and outdoor sports resort. I looked up the condo we're staying in on Zillow. It's a lifted 1br built in 1972 with 615 sq ft. Nicely maintained for a. Vacay rental but nothing to justify the half mill. Price Zillow had on it.But places like Bishop are a bit better. Groceries about the same as home. Gas higher, now over $7 for reg.
