It's hard to imagine the devastation. Biltmore Village always flooded some, but it looks like this may have been "the big one" for them. And how long has the strip there at Chimney Rock been there? Probably almost as long as there's been a park there, like from early 1900's. And even if the Lake Lure dam survived, I wonder if they'll be able to safely repair it and will likely have to mostly drain the lake to do it.

The River Arts district in Asheville is a real shame. They spent a decade transforming it from urban blight into a destination 'hood. All gone.

... The amount of rain and flooding was unimaginable. There's still very little information coming out. I think the Times News is effectively shut down, they seem to just be running Citizen Times articles with none of their own....

That's been going on awhile. HT-N was down to a single reporter before Helene. They've also ended Saturday publication. Ironic that banni, we and BRD outlasted the everyday HT-N!

I took a nap then stayed up 10/27 to see how bad it would get.
- The local creek was higher than I've ever seen it. Way out of its banks and fast, a true torrent from what's usually a trickle.
- The little bridge lost its railings, but the concrete deck survived intact. Otherwise, 16 condos in 4 buildings would have been SOoL.
- At one point the neighbor's shed floated by. Not a cheap piece of tin, this is a solid 12'x12' foot structure with fiberglass/plastic siding. It ended up on top of a couple of trees it took out, without any apparent damage to the shed. They look like the Wicked Witch of the East.
- One huge tree fell taking out a sizable chunk of our driveway. It could have hit one of our buildings. It could have crushed cars in 2 directions. It could have hit the neighbor's house. Instead, it feel harmlessly in their yard. Wow.
- A different neighbor had a tree obliterate their carport. It was sitting on their car's hood, not sure how much damage was done. 2 other trees landed on their house. It's now tarped, but didn't look that bad.
- Downtown got power AFTER me I walked to the library to use their computers, but it didn't have power yet. The cafes had WiFi, but I hadn't brought my laptop since I was counting on the library. Opps.
- I'll look at neoplacebo's old place once I get my car running (alternator?).
- Idk what the volunteer needs will be at that point. We've had people come from all over. Yay.
- Maybe the Haus Heidelberg did okay. Nothing about flooding or closure on their website:

So many conspiracy theories being spread around about this hurricane. It's insane.

- FEMA is only giving out 750 bucks and telling everyone to get fucked.

- The gov is trying to take the land around chimney rock to Mike lithium

- the hurricane was caused by the deep state or some other shadowy entity.

- FEMA money was diverted from disasters to illegal immigrants and now none is left.

- People trying to help are being arrested by the government.

- FEMA is stealing goods donated and hoarding them and not helping.

And so forth.

- Relief is being prioritized to Dem voters and counties It pisses me off the way true disasters get highjacked.

Unbelievable. Used to be people knew to band together in a disaster and political/religious issues were put aside at least temporarily. Now it's just another excuse to point a finger of blame.

He also claimed, falsely, that Harris had busted the Federal Emergency Management Agency budget to house undocumented migrants and could therefore not help victims of the storm. And Trump and his running mate, Sen. JD Vance, misled the country by claiming that the federal government was only offering $750 in aid to citizens who lost their homes. Some of Trump’s claims were debunked by Republican leaders in Georgia and Tennessee. But from Trump’s point of view, it doesn’t matter whether his claims are nonsense. It’s all about making inroads with voters who may not know nuances of the federal relief effort but might take away an unflattering portrayal of Harris....

The Harris campaign on Monday sought to revive memories of his checkered disaster management record, debuting an ad featuring two former Trump administration officials, Olivia Troye and Kevin Carroll, claiming that the former president once tried to withhold disaster relief funds from Democratic states....

It's their job to warn residents about destructive storms — but political polarization has made them targets online

As Hurricane Milton approaches Florida, meteorologists are staying awake for days at a time trying to get vital, life-saving information out to the folks who will be affected. That’s their job. But this year, several of them tell Rolling Stone, they’re increasingly having to take time out to quell the nonstop flow of misinformation during a particularly traumatic hurricane season. And some of them are doing it while being personally threatened.

“People are just so far gone, it’s honestly making me lose all faith in humanity,” says Washington D.C.-based meteorologist Matthew Cappucci, in a phone interview conducted while he was traveling down to Florida for the storm. “There’s so much bad information floating around out there that the good information has become obscured.”

Cappucci says that he’s noticed an enormous change on social media in the last three months: “Seemingly overnight, ideas that once would have been ridiculed as very fringe, outlandish viewpoints are suddenly becoming mainstream and it’s making my job much more difficult.”

He says meteorologists and disaster relief experts have to strike a balance between putting out helpful, high-quality information while also squashing misinformation. “Nowadays, there’s so much bad information out there that if we spent our time getting rid of it, we’d have no more time.”

This hurricane season, Cappucci and the other meteorologists I spoke with say, conspiracy theories have been flooding their inboxes. The main one that people have seemed to latch onto is the accusation that the government can control the weather. This theory seems to be amplified with climate change creating worsening storms combined with a tense election year, and the vitriol is being directed at meteorologists. “I’ve been doing this for 46 years and it’s never been like this,” says Alabama meteorologist James Spann. He says he’s been “inundated” with misinformation and threatening messages like “Stop lying about the government controlling the weather or else.”

“For me to post a hurricane forecast and for people to accuse me of creating the hurricane by working for some secret Illuminati entity is disappointing and distressing, and it’s resulting in a decrease in public trust,” says Cappucci. He says he hasn’t slept in multiple days and is exhausted. This last week he received hundreds of messages from people accusing him of modifying the weather and creating hurricanes from space lasers.

“Ignorance is becoming socially acceptable. Forty or 50 years ago, if I told you I thought the moon was pretend, people would have laughed at me. Now, people are bonding over these incredibly fringe viewpoints.”

Ive noticed in times of stress many turn to their interpretation of Jesus, the gospel and general batshittery. Often they go hand in hand.

There is the influence of Russians and others, but mostly it's that DonOLD unlocked the gates of the asylum. Reminds me of when the Ghostbusters containment vault broke down and all the ghosts escaped at once.
