Single hurricane thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Florida’s home insurer of last resort is in serious trouble. Will Milton put it over the edge?

https://www.cnn.com/2024/10/11/business ... index.html

An exodus of national insurance companies from Florida, combined with local private insurers canceling plans, has left many homeowners there with only one option: Citizens Property Insurance Corp.

The state-backed nonprofit home insurance company was set up to be an insurer of last resort for those who can’t find coverage in the private market. With 1.3 million policies in force as of last month, three times as many compared to five years ago, Citizens is by far the largest provider in the state.

But now, with Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton both making landfall and devastating homes in Florida within just days of each other, the insurer will almost certainly have to pay out billions of dollars in claims.

Can Citizens stay afloat?

The answer lies in the insurer’s structure – which might be reassuring to policyholders, even if it ultimately leads to higher premiums.
I wonder if it'll be near impossible to insure your home in Florida at some point in the future.

I just got my monthly bill from Optimum phone/TV/internet - 21 cents. I was wondering if they were going to discount for the long outage. Helene must have cost them a bundle.

As many as 100,000 people in Western North Carolina don't have running water after Helene

:problem: :( I keep several gallons of drinking water and a couple of 5 gallon buckets for washing and flushing, but not enough to go more than two weeks. I suppose if relief wasn't available I could filter or boil creek water, but what a mess for Asheville and northern Henderson County!

"Officials have said they don't anticipate water fully returning to customers for weeks at a minimum."

If they have water: "Boil water notice remains in effect for Asheville area"

Opinion: Helene's destruction left NC election officials scrambling. Trump isn't helping.
North Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee are among those Southern states dealing with the tragic aftermath of Helene – and the potential for election disruption.

... Georgia did have to deal with the Republican presidential nominee's visit Monday, when his rhetorical crosswinds showed an incapacity for compassion in the face of disaster. Trump, in a post on his social media site Truth Social, said he would also visit North Carolina soon and accused the federal government and the governor of that state, a Democrat, of "going out of their way to not help people in Republican areas."

But in a bored and monotonous reading of a speech in Valdosta, Georgia, Trump claimed to be striving for unity: "We're not talking about politics now. We have to all get together and get this solved."

Trump was pointedly asked by NBC News for evidence to substantiate his allegations about withheld help. The former one-term president could only mutter a meek "take a look" in response.

Trump also lied Monday about the Republican governor of Georgia, whom he has attacked and embraced, having trouble getting the White House on the phone. Gov. Brian Kemp had already said earlier in the day that he had no trouble getting in touch with President Joe Biden....

If José Andrés comes to your town, you know something unfortunate probably is going on.
Understatement :problem:
But he's going to make it better by doing what he does best: making sure the people who are reeling from a traumatic event get a good meal.

That's why one of the best-known chefs in world was in Western North Carolina on Monday. The multiple James Beard award winner is the founder of World Central Kitchen, a chef-driven relief organization drops into communities around the globe to provide meals following natural disasters and other crises....

World Central Kitchen is now working in North Carolina, Florida, Georgia and Tennessee, all impacted severely by Helene. Between North Carolina and Tennessee, WCK is working with 16 restaurant partners and, as of Oct. 1, had served 23,251 meals. Another 40,798 meals had gone to Florida and Georgia.

WCK also has activated two helicopters to scour Florida and North Carolina for cut-off residents.

In Asheville, where infrastructure damage caused acute potable water shortages, the group has deployed five 6,200-gallon water tankers....

What an excellent report, thanks. They sure found perfect people to interview - kayaker, warehouse girl, Megan. Idk if you followed the links but the couple, Project Atticus, had been low-budget sailing in the Med for a couple of years and producing a video journal. That's how they got so good at it. I got this much from intro snippets to their paywall. They're now settling down, possibly an hour from Asheville?
