Yeah, that could be, even just out of compassion along with blunting any bad PR from fighting a potential suit. Not that I think mega-corps are typically compassionate but damn, this thing really, really sucks. I get the creeps just thinking about it.

In this case there were no alligator warning signs. Only "No Swimming." "But the entertainment giant is reviewing whether to add gator warning signs."O Really wrote:Typically, there are "Beware the alligators" signs or a "Don't feed the alligators" sign with a drawing of one hauling away a dog or kid. But there's a chance of finding an alligator in any puddle of water in Florida - parks, golf courses, housing development retention ponds, whatever.
The family was from Nebraska. It's not unreasonable for them to not expect alligators at the Seven Seas Lagoon Disney World beach. It's the sort of thing tourists would be warned about at the very least.

As a lawyer and a Floridian, O Really, what do you think the responsibility is to post gator warning signs given the rarity of attacks and that, as you say, gators can be and are anywhere there's fresh or brackish water? I'm not trying to take a position, just curious.

If there had to be a specific warning for everything dangerous that a visitor could encounter in Florida, the list would be long. I"m thinking "Beware: Q-tips driving" or "Warning - idiot legislators at work." But in this case, I think there should have been a real "alligator" warning, not just "no swimming." Even if there were no alligators close by, it would give a warning there could be as well as enforcing and providing some rationale for the "no swimming." Decent legal discussion here... http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/legal- ... &ocid=iehp

Thanks. I wonder if such signs would stop parents from letting their toddlers splash in ankle deep water only a foot offshore. I have swum in alligator water, though less so after seeing scores of them.
JTA would have appreciated a skeeter warning sign at the border.

I'm sure some would let the kid wade. The ones who walk their bite-size dogs past the ones on the trail probably would. I think maybe the difference in the instance, though, is that the lagoon was apparently man-made and totally a part of the Disney experience, unlike an open park or swamp with trails. But even in some of those wilderness type parks, there are beware the gator signs. Even so, I don't think not having the sign reaches the point of negligence. Probably some plaintiff attorneys will disagree, particularly since it's Disney.

You should sue, JTA. I'll testify as to both the health effects of skeeters and heat and to how distressed you were by them . . . for a cut of your award.
Yeah, that's what I was wondering. You're probably right that Disney will settle, possibly before a lawsuit's ever filed, so we'll never know for sure.O Really wrote:I'm sure some would let the kid wade. When I was down there I was messing with people so hard. I was complaining about the heat when I was in the keys. I told them I thought it was supposed to be cool this time of the year. They looked at me like I was a moron and I told them it's because Florida is in the southern hemisphere and in the Southern hemisphere it's winter whilst in the Northern it's summer, and that's why all the people flock to Florida in winter time and head back North in the summer.Vrede too wrote:You should sue, JTA. You reminded me of a weird thing it took me awhile to adjust to as a mariner: Unless the sun is directly overhead outside of the tropics, in the Northern Hemisphere it travels from left to right across the sky. In the Southern Hemisphere it's right to left.

Also another fun fact: in the southron hemisphere, on traffic lights green means stop and red means go.

You're messing with us like we're Floridians. They don't have traffic lights in the Southern Hemisphere, they use mechanical flags.
If you're outside the tropics in the Southern Hemisphere and the sun is not directly overhead, you're generally looking somewhat north to see it. So, its east-west track is right to left because east is now on your right as you face north.

No idea. Sounds hokey to me. But it seems in any case "right" or "left" would depend on which direction you're facing. As to the sun rising in the west, no. The apparent movement of the sun comes from the Earth's rotation and would be the same no matter where you stand. In Florida, the sun always sets at the end of Duval street.JTA wrote:

Also flush toilets in the Southern Hemisphere have to have air-tight lids because when you flush them, they flush upwards instead of downward.JTA wrote:Does not compute. I'm having trouble visualizing this.Vrede too wrote:![]()

That's the point. To face the sun here we generally face south, so east is left. Imagine mid winter. To face the sun there they generally face north, so east is right. If you're not facing the sun, it doesn't matter, east is east. The only weird thing is that how we perceive the sun tracking across the sky is different in the hemispheres - left > right here, right > left there.O Really wrote:... Re: Guns, race, religion, terror, wingnut thread
John McCain today blamed President Obama for the Orlando shooting, calling him “directly responsible” for the attack.
It's nice to see Republicans rallying around Trump. Even McCain is willing to embarrass and disgrace himself in order to make Trump look like intelligent and reasonable.
