'Baby' found dead near park turns out to be realistic doll

Horror and alarm over the discovery of what appeared to be the body of a dead baby at a New York City park turned to relief, and probably some embarrassment, Tuesday when the blue-skinned corpse was later revealed to be a realistic-looking doll.

Police and paramedics rushed to Crocheron Park in the Bayside neighborhood of Queens at around 7:40 a.m. after a woman out for a morning jog found the "baby" lying face-down in the grass.

Detectives descended on the park in droves to look for evidence. A crime scene tent was set up. Yellow tape blocked off the area where the discovery was made.

Police initially reported the child was three months old and had been pronounced dead at the scene of an undetermined cause.

At some point, though, a closer inspection showed the object in the grass was a doll or some sort of theatrical prop, with its skin apparently purposely colored to resemble decomposing skin.

One giveaway was the baby's T-shirt, which read, "the crawling dead."

The red lettering wasn't initially visible because the doll was on its stomach.

"It appeared to be a baby with discoloration consistent with signs of prolonged death, but thankfully, it was actually a lifelike prop," Fire Department spokesman Myles Miller said.

The error was discovered when personnel from the city's medical examiner arrived to retrieve the body.

Police said the episode is under investigation. The Fire Department's Emergency Medical Service was also doing a medical review, Miller said.

Thousands urge Netflix to cancel 'Good Omens.' It's on Amazon Prime

... Return to Order, a campaign affiliated with right-wing Catholic group the American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property, objected to the “blasphemous” show, BBC News reports....

Following the announcement of the petition urging the cancellation of the show, the Twitter account for Netflix U.K. and Ireland tweeted, "OK we promise not to make any more."

Amazon Prime’s Twitter account floated a possible deal with its competitor, tweeting, “Hey @netflix, we’ll cancel Stranger Things if you cancel Good Omens.”

Gaiman himself responded to the petition on Twitter, writing, “I love that they are going to write to Netflix to try and get #GoodOmenscancelled. Says it all really.”

That's a petition they can all safely ignore, being quite certain they're not losing any customers.
On the other hand, maybe it was intentional. Their petition got lots more attention than it would have if it had been right, and then nobody would have ever heard of "Return to Order." Or maybe that would have been better.

Yep. 8.4/10 on IMDb, not going anywhere.

It would also be a great prank for the "Return to Order" PR people to pull.

Cool pic. I'm more intrigued than horrified.

Due to an oversight by Return to Order staff, this petition originally listed Netflix as responsible for the offensive series "Good Omens." Amazon Video released the series on May 31. We regret the mistake, and the protests will be delivered to Amazon when the campaign is complete.

If god didn't want you to make fools of yourselves, s/he would have prevented this.

The Amazon series "Good Omens," based on a book by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, portrays the agents of Good and Evil as fighters in an arbitrary struggle devoid of meaning and truth. This series presents devils and Satanists as normal and even good, where they merely have a different way of being, and mocks God's wisdom in the following ways:

    • An angel and demon are good friends, and are meant to be earth's ambassadors for Good and Evil respectively.

    • This pair tries to stop the coming of the Antichrist because they are comfortable and like the earth so much.

Wait, the coming of the Antichrist is a good thing and liking "the earth [sic]" is a bad thing?

    • God is voiced by a woman.

I thought that Frances McDormand was god before this show.

    • The Antichrist, who will oppose the Kingdom of God, is portrayed as a normal kid that has special powers and a mission to destroy the world which he doesn't really want to do.

    • There are groups of Satanic "nuns" that are chosen to raise the Antichrist.

Now they're just turning me on.

    • The four riders of the Apocalypse, God's means of punishing sinful earth, are portrayed as a group of bikers.

That is what they find to be too fanciful?

In the end, this is a denial of Good and Evil:

:confusion-scratchheadblue: They've both got starring roles.

morality and natural law do not exist, just humanitarianism and an ultimately useless creed. This is another step to make Satanism appear normal, light and acceptable.

:confusion-scratchheadblue: That's what believers have always done. Atheists are the ones that don't think any of those things.

We must show our rejection. Please sign our petition, telling Amazon that we will not stand silent as they destroy the barriers of horror we still have for evil.

:D Several comments about Weekend at Bernies.
... The trooper had no choice but to break the bad news — cars are only allowed in the carpool lane when they’re carrying at least two “living, breathing people.”

“He’s not with us” he told the driver, then clarified, “This body was in the rear cargo and that doesn’t qualify as a seat.” ...
He only got a warning, but if he'd gotten a ticket he might have had a case. I'm too lazy to look up the wording of the law, but the NVDOT says:
HOV lanes are dedicated lanes to be used exclusively by vehicles with two or more people ...
Nothing about “living, breathing", not being "cargo", or being in "a seat.” The cop probably made all of that up.

Yeah, the cop made it up as he went along, because he'd never seen that "excuse" before. But taking him at his word, that would mean that even a live person who was riding in the back wouldn't count. I think the warning was appropriate. Good thing the hearse driver wasn't black, though. He might have been shot when he couldn't get his passenger to get out and stand beside the vehicle.

While the hearse driver’s excuse was a unique one, it certainly wasn’t the first time someone has tried to navigate their way into the carpool lane using a bogus story.

A Northern California man once tried to argue that the articles of incorporation for his business counted as a second passenger, as the Supreme Court regards corporations as individuals in legal matters.

I've seen several stories in the past where people have gotten tickets driving in the pool lane with dummies or mannequins. I think they were all found guilty......the drivers, not the dummies. They got off with a warning, as there was no collusion.

It's a huge screw up when there are portable devices for fingerprinting in the field, and there will be some large settlements, BUT life support was NOT "accidentally" cut off and there was no "wrongful death". The plug just doesn't get pulled unless it should be, even if the wrong family makes the heartbreaking decision.
