Face-Eating Leopards

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

The bottom line is this debate exposes what a sham Obamacare is. Now the truth is coming out. If not for the subsidies the folks would have been outraged.
Now do Medicare Advantage, invented by Bush II.....hundreds of millions going to insurance companies instead of being paid back into the system.
".hundreds of millions going to insurance companies instead of being paid back into the system."

Advantage plans are like all private insurance plans and are voluntary. Companies place their profits back into the economy through dividends and investments in the market.

What does "back into the system" mean?

:wtf: It was never a "sham". They were always called ACA subsidies so that more Americans would be insured, and money has been appropriated to do just that. It's like SoupySales has been asleep for 13 years.

Not to explain insurance to an insurance guy, but "back into the system" means the Medicare system, which is tax funded and held within the government. Medicare supplements are private insurance plans funded directly by the subscriber and, other than benefits coordination, is not directly connect to Medicare. The so-called "Advantage" uses the tax money and keeps the profit. While limiting access to benefits established for the Medicare Plan.

And if you recall or have read, the reason Medicare was established in the first place was because private insurance companies at the time refused to cover people over 65 or else maybe did so with totally unaffordable premiums.

The concept of for profit medical coverage is abhorrent.

To be fair, most of the world is single payer for profit. Only a few countries like the UK are fully socialized.

""The concept of for profit medical coverage is abhorrent."

Why?

It serves as an option for folks who choose to buy it.

I know they're voluntary. With a big assist from non stop television ads that are designed to be misleading and promise all kinds of additional "benefits" but they don't tell you about all the prior approval procedures and the limited availability of providers. And just over the last few months, United Health Care and a couple of others are dropping these plans in certain areas.

And O Really already explained to you what "back into the system" means.....it means that the Medicare system is losing massive amounts of money by the money going to private companies instead of being used to support the system. I've been on Medicare for nearly six years and have never used it. But I'm glad that none of the money I pay into Medicare each month is not contributing to the collapse of the system.

... Companies place their profits back into the economy through dividends and investments in the market....
:D

"Dividends" which benefit fatcats more than regular folk, and which are taxed at a lower rate than wages.
"investments in the market" which benefit executives and other fatcats more than regular folk, and which are taxed at a lower rate than wages.
Then, there are diversions of profits to massive executive wages and board member compensation which are plowed into the economies of offshore bankers and sellers of luxury goods.
Medicare, otoh, places its excess back into providing healthcare for American clients.

For example, UnitedHealthcare, whose CEO was executed by folk hero Luigi Mangione on December 4, 2024, is accused of Medicare Advantage overbilling and other corrupt activities.
... UnitedHealth Group has faced investigations, lawsuits, and fines, including SEC enforcement for stock option backdating, Medicare over-billing, unfair claims practices, mental health treatment denials, and anticompetitive behavior.

... In 2017, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) fined UnitedHealthcare $2.5 million after discovering issues in Medicare Part D leading to delays or denials in a 2016 audit.

... A study by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that in 2021, Medicare Advantage programs provided insurers with double the gross margin of insurance for individuals, groups, or Medicaid Managed Care....
:puke-left: Refusing care is obscene, as is gaming the system.

Let's ask Rupert Murdoch and Pam Bondi about it:
In July 2024, the Wall Street Journal concluded that UnitedHealth was the worst offender among private insurers who made dubious diagnoses in their clients in order to trigger large payments from the government's Medicare Advantage program. The patients often did not receive any treatment for those insurer-added diagnoses. The report, based on Medicare data obtained from the federal government under a research agreement, calculated that diagnoses added by UnitedHealth for diseases patients had never been treated for had yielded $8.7 billion in payments to the company in 2021 – over half of its net income of $17 billion for that year. In July 2025, the Wall Street Journal reported that DOJ officials were interviewing former UnitedHealth employees in connection with the investigation, and later that month, UnitedHealth confirmed that it was under criminal and civil federal investigation for its Medicare practices.

The reason companies quit selling the product is they are not profitable which, in and of itself, tells us a lot about health insurance.
