Coronavirus

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

... Meanwhile the R's are trying to recall Governor Newsom (D). General consensus is that the recall effort will fail, but I suspect he's none too happy about it.
Idk, the political embarrassment and financial waste for the Repugs may be a good thing for Newsom and the Dems.

That's amazing!
:happy-cheerleaderkid:
I wonder what the best CA county and best state is. I think I heard something about AK bragging. WV, too. SNL says it was because of the "Free Meth" signs.
Here ya' go.

Dunno about states, but Vermont is high and WV, too. Not to take away from their effort, but they didn't have very many people. Of course, in WV, they had to truck doses out and dig people out of the hollers. (fer real)

I should have known, Marin is the fully vaccinated best.
SF is 2nd best.
Alameda is great, but it's 7th best behind 5 other Bay Area counties and the 1,500 doses given in Alpine County.
San Diego is 12th, way better than Santa Barbara, hah!
Worst is Yuba County, NE of Ulysses.

Your link links to the national data.
https://ncovtrack.com/vaccine/usa/states
However, the interactive function is screwed up. As you say, VT is great, but none of the columns bump it to the top where it should be. :x

Dammit, the CA graph has similar, but mostly minor glitches. Lassen County is really the worst.

The US link from your CA link says 70.28%, still best in the nation but a big gap from 77.9%. -0-?

Statistics never lie. Statisticians do.
Or maybe there's smoke and mirrors. Or creative accounting.

I checked a few of the stats and they don't even match each other on that site, let alone stats from other sites.

It's sort of difficult finding stats, but then I was looking specifically for Alameda County. I'm getting sleepy so maybe I'll post some mañana.

So Faucis emails have been released to the press.

And as expected, there is already tons of misinformation being spread regarding them.

Here's one example:

"Fauci said in his emails that masks don't work"

The reality: he said that they don't protect you from contracting the virus, but do protect others if you're infected by helping stop the spread.

This is consistent with what they were saying the entire time.

But people will run with this.

Yup.

I shared a video over on LNF with some guy who does a lot of science type videos. It's Joe Hanson with his "It's OK to Be Smart" videos. According to him - and he has the science to back it up - the primary mode of covid transmission is through droplets, not individual virus particles. He said the masks are about 90% effective at blocking the droplets getting out of an infected person in to the ambient air more than three feet away. And the masks are about 60% effective at protecting an uninfected person from same. Naturally the idiots over on LNF poo-poo'd the guy.

Here's one of his videos about how masks help stop covid from spreading:

 :o  :o This whole place is like some sort of religious conclave with oppressive overtones of savage whiteness....... polluting the clean waters of reason. I just made that up while under the influence of what law enforcement refers to as dangerous and illegal substances. But it's true all the same. They hate me for it but we stay out of each others way. So far so good.

'Lockdown' states like California did better economically than 'looser' states like Florida, new COVID data shows

... One assumption many Americans seem to make is that the more a government limits gatherings, mandates masks, restricts business activity and advises residents to stay at home, the more economic damage it will do.

Among the loudest of these voices is Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican who raised his national profile by allowing bars and restaurants to operate at full indoor capacity during America’s horrific holiday surge, then effectively banned mask mandates once Florida started to recover — all in the name of supporting business....

Yet for much of the past year, some experts have quietly advanced a counterargument: that economic activity is mainly affected by the rising and falling severity of the pandemic itself — not the relative strictness of the measures implemented to mitigate it. In fact, these experts argued, nonpharmaceutical interventions, or NPIs — a set of 20 government responses such as business closures, mask mandates and stay-at-home advisories that Oxford University rates according to stringency — can have an economic upside. The more the virus seems to be under control, the more eager people will be to participate in the economy.

Last week, this argument got a boost with the publication of a new report by economists at the University of California, Los Angeles. According to the latest quarterly UCLA Anderson Forecast, not only did big states with more stringent COVID measures end 2020 with fewer infections per capita, they also tended to post better economic growth numbers last year than states with fewer restrictions.

In other words, California’s economy actually fared better than Florida’s....
:obscene-birdiered: , DeSantis.

National "vaccine passport" now becoming available - including Florida - privately developed, and there's not a damn thing DeSantis can do about it.
Still in roll-out, but so far so good.

How will the existence of a vaccine passport (I already have one in my wallet) stop FL and TX from preventing businesses and govt from requiring them?

Pending any court decisions that may or may not affect it, he might be able to fine businesses that require them, but would have a much harder time preventing the offer of rewards for having them. While I personally favor requiring vaccines, I'm guessing compliance will be gained more by social means.
