You think the folks caught up in that shit had any idea they would be driving during a riot?

I'm saying that non-rioter civilians weren't hurt in Charlotte as far as I know, and that it's rare for non-rioter civilians to be hurt in other riots here. Of course, I can't predict for every scenario but I think in most you would increase the danger to yourself by brandishing, even if you did take a few with you. A riot is not comparable to taking out, say, one or more home invaders. Then, in general you increase the danger to yourself by being armed. Is that worth the remote possibility of driving into a riot?

I'd be more inclined to show my hands and shout, "ER nurse, Black Lives Matter!" Which of us do you think is more likely to survive? ...

A recent working paper by two Louisiana State University economists revealed that the state's juvenile court judges dole out harsher sentences on weeks following a loss by the LSU football team (among those judges who matriculated at LSU). The differences in sentences were particularly stark in those seasons that LSU's team was nationally ranked. (All sentences from 1996 to 2012 were examined, for first-time juvenile offenders, except for murder and aggravated-rape cases.) [New York magazine, 9-9- 2016]

Listened to Charlotte Talks on public radio this morning. Several witnesses said that the demos. were peaceful both nights until the cops got super aggressive. Then, there was rioting. The next night the cops let protestors have the streets other than the interstate - no rioting. I don't know if it's true and am not bothering to research further, but I have personally seen this exact same type of thing before. Not that I've ever rioted, but people do when they're pushed or see other civvies get hurt.

... GQ: We’re in the middle of a huge national discussion right now about the relationship between police and minority communities. You’ve said elsewhere that, in your experience, cops aren’t individually racist, but they are actors in a racist system. Can you explain what that means?

Raeford Davis: That’s part of the disconnect, and that’s why you see law enforcement officers get so upset when they’re called out as just a bunch of racists. In North Charleston we had black leadership in my department, and Charlotte has a black chief. These guys would not tolerate overt racism. They work very hard to maintain a good rapport with the black community and they would get really upset when you did things to mess it up. However, they kind of operate under the same illusions. They put their murder and robbery rates over a map of the city and that’s mostly in poor and minority neighborhoods, and they say, “That’s why we’re there, it has nothing to do with race.” But we know that from the outset drug enforcement was just a covert continuation of Jim Crow-type oppression laws. The laws apply to everyone in theory, but we know they were used to target minority communities. Those efforts have a destabilizing effect on the community, and destabilized communities have more crime, then you have more police presence and activity, and that further destabilizes the community. No additional racism from individual officers is necessary....
