Black veteran says he was refused free Veteran's Day meal at Chili's after man in Trump shirt questioned his service

... "I was approached by an old white guy, maybe in his 70s, with a Trump shirt, at Chili's on Veteran's Day yesterday... He said he was in Germany, and that they did not let Blacks serve over there," Walker wrote in a Facebook post on Saturday.

Walker told Dallas News he was stationed in Hawaii in the 25th Infantry Division during the late 1980s. Black soldiers have fought in every American war since the Revolutionary War, including World War II, though often in segregated units.

Walker said that as he prepared to leave with a to-go box of food, he was approached by the Chili's manager, Wesley Patrick. Walker said Patrick told him that another customer had reported he was not a real veteran, and that his dog, who was with him at the restaurant, was not an actual service dog....

Twitter's problems will only get worse after Trump's win

... Hate speech on the rise on Twitter

In June, the the Anti-Defamation League formed a Task Force on Harassment and Journalism, “in response to a disturbing upswing in online, anti-Semitic abuse of reporters.” In October, the task force released its findings. It confirmed “a significant uptick in anti-Semitic tweets from January 2016 to July 2016,” and found that the hateful tweets were “disproportionately likely” to come from Trump supporters.

In total, the ADL found 2.6 million anti-Semitic tweets since August 2015—two months after Trump announced his candidacy. Those tweets got an estimated 10 billion impressions (reflective of reach), which ADL believes “contributed to reinforcing and normalizing anti-Semitic language—particularly racial slurs and anti-Israel statements—on a massive scale.”

This is all, obviously, bad for Twitter. No social media platform wants to be responsible for offering a platform for or “normalizing” anti-Semitic hate speech. But the ADL also pinpointed a source of the hateful tweets: Trump supporters.

Those tweeting out hate speech, the ADL says, were “disproportionately likely to self-identify as Donald Trump supporters, conservatives, or part of the ‘alt-right,’ a loosely connected group of extremists, some of whom are white supremacists.”

Trump’s win does little to temper those people; rather, it arguably empowers them....
ADL Task Force Issues Report Detailing Widespread Anti-Semitic Harassment of Journalists on Twitter During 2016 Campaign
Some 800 Reporters Targeted; 1,600 Accounts Responsible for Two-Thirds of Hateful Tweets

... The report, the first of its kind, presents findings based on a broad set of keywords (and keyword combinations) designed by ADL to capture anti-Semitic language on social media. Using this metric, a total of 2.6 million tweets containing language frequently found in anti-Semitic speech were posted across Twitter between August 2015 and July 2016. Those tweets had an estimated 10 billion impressions (reach), which ADL believes contributed to reinforcing and normalizing anti-Semitic language – particularly racial slurs and anti-Israel statements -- on a massive scale.

There was a significant uptick in anti-Semitic tweets from January 2016 to July 2016 as coverage of the presidential campaign intensified.

Of the 2.6 million total tweets, ADL focused its analysis on tweets directed at 50,000 journalists in the United States. A total of 19,253 anti-Semitic tweets were directed at those journalists, but the total number of anti-Semitic tweets directed at journalists overall could be much higher for a variety of factors noted in the report.

The report also shows that more than two-thirds (68 percent) of the anti-Semitic tweets directed at those journalists were sent by 1,600 Twitter accounts (out of 313 million existing Twitter accounts). These aggressors are disproportionately likely to self-identify as Donald Trump supporters, conservatives, or part of the “alt-right," a loosely connected group of extremists, some of whom are white supremacists. The words that appear most frequently in the 1,600 Twitter attackers’ bios are “Trump,” “nationalist,” “conservative,” and “white.”

... The ADL Task Force study shows that a small cohort of journalists bore the brunt of the online abuse. The Task Force identified that some 19,253 overtly anti-Semitic tweets were sent to at least 800 journalists in the U.S. during the 12 month study. The top 10 most targeted journalists – all of whom are Jewish – received 83 percent of those 19,253 tweets. The top 10 includes conservative columnist Ben Shapiro, Tablet’s Yair Rosenberg, the Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg and The New York Times’ Jonathan Weisman, and CNN’s Sally Kohn and Jake Tapper....

“The spike in hate we’ve seen online this election cycle is extremely troubling and unlike anything we have seen in modern politics. A half century ago, the KKK burned crosses. Today, extremists are burning up Twitter,” said Jonathan A. Greenblatt, ADL CEO. “We are concerned about the impact of this hate on the ability of journalists to do their job and on free speech, which is why we established this Task Force....

ADL has been able to identify individuals and websites in the white supremacist world that have played a role in encouraging these attacks. While much of the online harassment of journalists was at the hands of anonymous trolls, ADL has identified two of the neo-Nazis responsible for some of the attacks. They are Andrew Anglin, founder of the popular white supremacist web site “The Daily Stormer” and Lee Rogers of Infostormer (formerly “The Daily Slave”). While both are banned from Twitter, they have encouraged their followers to tweet anti-Semitic language and memes at Jewish journalists....

"Childishly screeching" ? Kinda early for a new "Phrase of the Month", isn't it?
"Childishly screeching about people wetting their pants over the Nazis." So who, pray tell, was cheering on the Nazis?

I've heard turtles can breathe out their ass; you and rstrong are the only ones I know that can talk out yours.

What's your sudden obsession with my father? Firstly, my father was too young to fight Nazis, secondly, my father was a career Naval submariner.
His last assignment was SCPO(ET) aboard the USS Daniel Webster (SSBN-626); he retired in 1973 and died in 1976 at age 50. Had he lived, I'm sure he would be proud that his oldest son chose his own path in life with personal convictions (and values) that he will not allow to be compromised by worldly opinions and 'political correctness'.

Now what?

Hate incidents spreading in wake of Trump win

On Friday, a Muslim-American high school teacher in central Georgia received a handwritten letter regarding her hijab.

“Your headscarf isn’t allowed anymore,” read the anonymous note. “Why don’t you tie it around your neck and hang yourself with it.”

On Saturday night, a church offering Spanish-language services in Silver Spring, Md., was vandalized with the message, “Trump nation. Whites only.”

And over the weekend, several college students at the New School in New York City awoke to find swastikas scrawled on their dorm-room doors.

These are just a few of the incidents of hate speech, harassment and intimidation that have been reported in the wake of last week’s presidential election. As of Friday evening, the Southern Poverty Law Center had counted 201 hate incidents in the first three days after the election, citing local news stories, social media posts and submissions through the SPLC’s website. By Monday, that number had more than doubled, to 437.

“We feel strongly that this outburst of hate crimes is directly related to Donald Trump’s victory,”Mark Potok, SPLC senior fellow, told Yahoo News, noting that “a very large proportion” of these cases included direct references to Donald Trump, his campaign or the presidential election.

Image

According to the SPLC, immigrants have been the object of most post-election hate reports, followed by African-Americans and LGBT persons. The group also counted 41 “pro-Trump” incidents of intimidation and vandalism targeting no one person or group in particular — such as the sign promoting unity in Connecticut that was spray-painted with the words “Trump 2016” — as well as 20 reported cases of anti-Trump harassment.

“My feeling is that Trump absolutely encouraged this,” Potok said, referring to the divisive rhetoric — including the claim that most Mexican immigrants are “rapists” and “criminals,” his promise to “build a wall” on the United States’ southern border and a proposed ban on allowing Muslims to enter the the country — that came to define Trump’s White House campaign.

“The man has spent the better part of 18 months attacking minorities of all kinds, so it should hardly be a surprise that people who despise minorities are now celebrating and acting out,” he said.

In fact, the recent outpouring of animosity seems to fall in line with what the SPLC and other anti-discrimination groups have described as a rising tide of hate over the past year or so leading up to the election....

Image

... “It’s all very well for Trump to disavow violence and say stop the hate, but the fact is, he’s been feeding this beast for a year and a half,” said Potok, calling Trump’s directive “a day late, a dollar short and completely disingenuous.” ...

“The fear is that if Donald Trump does not move away from these extremists, that the violence and political situation will become even worse,” said Potok.

Megyn Kelly chides Trump advocate who cites Japanese internment camps as precedent for Muslim registry

Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach, an anti-immigration hardliner, is part of President-elect Donald Trump's transition team, and according to Reuters, he would like Trump to consider instituting a registry and tracking system for visitors to the U.S. from some Muslim countries....

"We did it during World War II with Japanese, which, you know, call it what you will, maybe...." ...
Let's call it what Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush called it:
Internment of Japanese Americans

... In 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed into law the Civil Liberties Act, which apologized for the internment on behalf of the U.S. government and authorized a payment of $20,000 to each individual camp survivor. The legislation admitted that government actions were based on "race prejudice, war hysteria, and a failure of political leadership." The U.S. government eventually disbursed more than $1.6 billion in reparations to 82,219 Japanese Americans who had been interned and their heirs....

On September 27, 1992, the Civil Liberties Act Amendments of 1992, appropriating an additional $400 million to ensure all remaining internees received their $20,000 redress payments, was signed into law by President George H. W. Bush. He issued another formal apology from the U.S. government on December 7, 1991, on the 50th-Anniversary of the Pearl Harbor Attack, saying:

"In remembering, it is important to come to grips with the past. No nation can fully understand itself or find its place in the world if it does not look with clear eyes at all the glories and disgraces of its past. We in the United States acknowledge such an injustice in our history. The internment of Americans of Japanese ancestry was a great injustice, and it will never be repeated."

Mike Pence booed at 'Hamilton'; addressing him, cast says it fears Trump team 'will not protect us'

“I see you walking out but I hope you will hear us. Nothing to boo here, we’re all sharing a story of love. We welcome you, and we truly thank you for joining us here at Hamilton: An American Musical — we really do. We are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights, sir. But we truly hope this show has inspired you to uphold our American values, and work on behalf of all of us.”

‘Apologize!’: Trump hits ‘Hamilton’ cast for confronting Pence

Adam Yauch Park Defaced With Anti-Semitic, Pro-Trump Graffiti

The latest shocking hate crime to be committed in President-elect Donald Trump’s name has taken place at a surprising location: a children’s playground. On Friday, the equipment at Brooklyn Heights’ Adam Yauch Park, which was renamed three years ago in honor of the late Beastie Boy, was defaced with graffiti of two swastikas and the words “Go Trump.”

It should be noted that Yauch (also known as MCA) was Jewish, as are surviving Beasties Michael Diamond (Mike D) and Adam Horovitz (Ad-Rock).

Yauch, who died of parotid cancer in 2012 at age 47, was also an advocate for peace. He was a practicing Buddhist and founder of the Milarepa Fund, a nonprofit organization behind several all-star Tibetan Freedom Concerts to benefit the cause of Tibetan independence. And when he accepted the Beastie Boys’ Video Vanguard Award at the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards, he spoke out about America’s wars against Muslim countries and prejudice against Middle Easterners.

“It’s very important that the United States start to look toward non-violent means for resolving conflicts,” Yauch said during his VMAs speech, adding, “Another thing America needs to think about is our racism – racism that comes from the United States towards Muslim people and towards Arabic people. And that’s something that has to stop.” ...
