Re: The car thread ...
As I recall, it didn't "fit" me very well. I'm six feet and it seems I might have had a little bit of a hard time getting adjusted so that I had room and vision. Also, I think it seemed to ride a bit "light" on the road. But that would have been over 5 years ago - they're probably better now, and my issues might not be the same as others.

That makes sense. I drive a really small vehicle now that rides loud/bumpy, accelerates super slow amongst many other things. Anything will be a huge upgrade for me. What's your usual ride?O Really wrote: ↑Wed Jun 05, 2024 1:46 pmAs I recall, it didn't "fit" me very well. But if we had a different lifestyle, I'd probably pick something else.

There are several of those that drive around here. "Ugly" doesn't start to describe them. And then there are the stories like the guy whose cybertruck bricked itself going through the carwash.

If there's a car you like, rent one and take it out for a couple of days or so under varying conditions.

Japanese cars tend not to fit me well. I actually had back problems from my 98 Subaru Outback. Maybe they're better now but it was the hard short seats and lack of lumbar for the overweight American
.
I've been driving a Ford Escape since 2019. Comfortable enough, a little underpowered, it's the first four cylinder I've had since the 80's, 30 mpg on the highway and zero problems with it.
Bought it at Carmax and it was a fair deal and the least painful car purchase of my life. In and out in 90 minutes and no haggling.

What do you look at when buying a used car to make sure you're not getting a POS? I bought my last used car from a dealership and it's been a beast in terms of reliability. 200k miles on that bad boy. Seems like most dealership used cars have some sort of warranty, in addition to the manufacturer drivetrain warranty.GoCubsGo wrote: ↑Wed Jun 05, 2024 10:21 pmJapanese cars tend not to fit me well. Carmax does warranty their cars (90 days?) and provides a carfax as well as going over them pretty thoroughly. I think there was a three day return policy too. Plus it still had a year of factory warranty. Without taking it to a mechanic it's always a bit of a crapshoot and they might miss something. But it was a newer used car with only 30,000 miles so I felt pretty good. I actually looked under the hood and tapped the body looking for bondo and examining screws and bolts looking for wrench marks (having been burned in the past) as that would show unregistered bodywork. The salesman laughed and said hardly anyone does that anymore.Whack9 wrote: ↑Thu Jun 06, 2024 7:24 amWhat do you look at when buying a used car to make sure you're not getting a POS? But heck, you can buy a new car and still get a lemon. Also, those little Subaru's are supposed to be top notch in terms of reliability.

Re: The car thread ...
Makes sense. The last car I bought had 60k. Certified pre owned from Toyota. The one I'm looking at now has about 30k miles. The Carfax seems clean. I know what to listen/feel for now in regards to things like wheel bearings and so forth. I'm not impressed with bells and whistles and all that type of stuff since I'm already a clown. Basic bitch base model is all I need.GoCubsGo wrote: ↑Thu Jun 06, 2024 7:50 amCarmax does warranty their cars (90 days?) and provides a carfax as well as going over them pretty thoroughly. I think the factory drivetrain warranty usually lasts till 60k miles right? I think if you add on 30k miles and have no issues you're likely ok.

Re: The car thread ...
That's my thinking.
Yeah, full warranties are usually three years, 60k miles. Some drivetrains are five years 100k miles, at least pre pandemic. Don't know about now.

I bought my Jeep from CarMax. Very satisfied with everything. They shipped it in for me to drive for 2-3 days, ($100 fee, but no obligation). long list of what they checked over. Fair price. And they have an in-house shop where they'll service it or fix anything that occurs. Maybe not everywhere, but the CarMax I dealt with were good people.

Same, the only pressure exerted was from the sales guy to buy the extended warranty on which he got a commission. A look in the eyes and a firm no shut that down.O Really wrote: ↑Thu Jun 06, 2024 10:36 amI bought my Jeep from CarMax. Very satisfied with everything. Hertz is having a fire sale. I know some people don't like rentals but when I had them I took extra care to avoid financial hits. The prices seem really low and if you want to go electric most used electrics under 25000 qualify for an instant 4000 dollar credit. They also have a rent to buy program where you rent the car for three days and if you buy there is no rental charge. They also have a free 3 hour test drive. If there is lot by you it might be worth it to look.

I've had (I think) two cars that were previous rentals. No problems with either of them. I might hesitate to buy one of the sporty type cars that might encourage driving hard by the renters, but I don't think most renters significantly abuse their cars.
