Re: NFL Football
There are also a couple of arguments from the statisticians - all season long, no previous pass was intercepted when the ball was on the one; Beast had 5 chances from the one during the season and only made one of them. Still, IMNVHO, WCE!

Re: NFL Football
There's also consideration of self-preservation. Run the Beast, and if he doesn't make it, fans are disappointed, but pretty much realize somebody is going to lose, and maybe remember the GB game and how they got to the Super Bowl anyway. But nobody would be calling it the WCE. Carroll would still be in high esteem as the coach to got them to two Super Bowls and is likely to be a contender next year. Architect of a dynasty. Pass and get intercepted when you've got Beast standing there with a couple downs to go and it's instant goat, to be pilloried for years to come. Like the poor guy who used to tumble down the hill as the "agony of defeat."

Re: NFL Football
Personally, I prefer a team that is consistently good, always in contention for playoffs, maybe get to the big one now and then - instead of a team that gets deep in the playoffs one year and then tanks for the next three or four. I certainly wouldn't call for Carroll's head. But in a sport where a team can go to the Super Bowl four times without a win and be called a "loser" and a quarterback like Peyton Manning can be labeled a "choker," then you can expect this loss will be remembered and a goat will be remembered for it.

Re: NFL Football
One of the most depressing endings to a game in my experience. Yuck. Bill Cowher said that
the OC called the plays, but that Carroll, as head coach, takes full responsibility. Either way,
I would have gone with Lynch on second down, pass on third if he didn't get in, and then
run or pass on fourth, if necessary. OTOH, I would have gone for the safer field goal than
the touchdown at the end of the first half, so it evens out anyway. The Seahawks really blew
it in the fourth quarter. All they had to do is prevent the Pats from scoring more than once
and they couldn't do it. Their offense didn't do much in the fourth quarter either, except in
that last two minutes. So if they had gotten the job done during the fourth, they wouldn't have
had to worry about making a last minute score. Oh well.

He still gave it away; he could have told 'em to keep it because he didn'y need it.Vrede wrote:"It is classy but to put it into perspective the $20-40K 2015 Chevy Colorado is about 0.2% of Brady's 2014-15 $14,800,000 pay. In relative terms I spent more than that on my niece's last birthday present, an REI gift card for hiking boots."
"Maybe he prefers his $303,300 Rolls Royce Ghost or his $114,900 Audi S8."
"The Chevy Colorado would be slumming it."
It wasn't as much as the value of the gift that's important; it's the thought behind the giving that counts.
It's amazing how people who envy what others have so scrutinize and criticize and look down their noses at the gifts they give.
I'm certain Butler was highly pleased to get the truck.

You still hangin' on to that...?What part of "in my other life" did you miss?
Surely you don't believe in reincarnation...!?
"I hope Brady is paying the taxes on the truck. Otherwise, it's a rather costly gift from the 15 Million Dollar Man."
In the morning news, there was a report that he was giving away the truck, but didn't speculate to whom. The report did say he would pax the taxes along with the taxes due on his MVP prize money.

Before I was a teacher, I was a womanizer in Europe and Asia. I had Roman hands and Russian fingers...
The truck may not go to Butler?
Unsure right now. It was originally reported that it would.
Paying the taxes on such a pricey gift is indeed even classier.

Pete Carroll, head coach of the Seattle Seahawks, is reported to be very near to signing on as a special consultant to The Pope in Vatican City. The Pope looks to recruit Carroll to be a spokesman for the Catholic Church because he is the first man in history that made 100 million people jump up and yell "Jesus Christ!" at the same time.
More information will be reported as this story is followed.

Just when I was getting over that thing. I have put it way
back in the memory bank, plus it's almost time to play ball.

Re: NFL Football
Daniel Snyder's fight over Washington's nickname is a lost cause
Eventually the nickname and logo of Washington's NFL franchise is headed to the dustbin of history, where future generations will look back in bafflement that it was ever allowed.
This is undeniable.
You can support the name and logo all you want. You can decry the excesses of political correctness (no "Dukes of Hazzard"?) You can find a Native American cloaked in an RG3 jersey in an attempt to prove your point. That's fine. This column isn't about trying to change anyone's opinion because too many opinions have already changed that it doesn't matter....
Last year no one would have predicted South Carolina politicians would vote in a bipartisan manner on the issue of removing the battle flag of the Army of Northern Virginia from the state capitol grounds. Let alone Alabama would do it via decree of its governor ...
This is a whole new day and Daniel Snyder is on the wrong side of quickly moving public sentiment.
That's the backdrop to Wednesday's decision by U.S. District Court in Virginia, ruling against Snyder and affirming a 2014 Trademark Trial and Appeal Board decision that deemed the name and logo offensive to Native Americans and thus ineligible for trademark protection.
How fast are things moving? In his ruling, Judge Gerald Bruce Lee rejected the franchise's First Amendment argument. He cited a U.S. Supreme Court decision that allowed the state of Texas to ban Confederate battle flags on license plates. That decision came last month....
It is hard to imagine they won't appeal. Then again, it was hard to imagine how quickly views changed on symbols of the Confederacy, where even a couple months ago just broaching the subject was considered a political third rail in certain places. Or how hard it was to foresee businesses distancing from Donald Trump so quickly, or the public embracing marriage equality or everything else that is happening in 2015.
Sometimes these things all come in an avalanche and the rocks sure are sliding right now. The battles will undoubtedly continue, but the so-called Culture War is over. The question is if Snyder is smart enough to realize it.
If anything, the District Court decision gives Snyder an easy out. He can throw up his hands and blame activist judges and overreaching bureaucrats, and find a new name without looking weak. Such a move would save him from historical scorn for defending what society increasingly sees as bigoted....
"A Redskin is a football player," Snyder continued. "A Redskin is our fans. The Washington Redskins fan base represents honor, represents respect, represents pride. Hopefully winning. And, and, it, it's a positive. Taken out of context, you can take things out of context all over the place. But in this particular case, it is what it is. It's very obvious."
This sounds exactly like the old defense of Confederate symbols that is losing momentum by the day. Oh, some will always make it, some will always believe it, but when the tipping point comes, most smartly retreat....

Well, not exactly.
Sure, "redskin" was originally a derogatory term for indigenous Americans. But whereas the battle flag of Northern Virginia has been used regularly in the context of white supremacy and segregation, the "Redskin" logo or its flags have never, as far as I know, been used by persons or groups intending to denigrate or discriminate against the Indians. And unlike "Chief Wahoo," the Redskin logo has never been cartoonish - one version actually looks like it was copied from a nickel.
Anyway, given the quality of the teams since Snyder owned them, I think "Deadbugs" would be a good name. And it still fits the rhythm of the fight song.

With all the wins this summer, Sanders running for POTUS and even Republicans talking economic justice it's getting harder to feel like a radical.
