Certainly the Democracy index has plateaued. But China makes up almost half the non-democracy part. While not a democracy, people have a lot more freedom than they used to. Capitalism has largely replaced communism. They're serious about attacking corruption. The standard of living has gone way up.

Two or three decades ago the US vs China was Democratic capitalism vs. Authoritarianism Communism. They're both slowly converging on Authoritarian Capitalism.

Thai rescuers locate missing boys and coach alive in cave

Rescuers found all 12 boys and their soccer coach alive deep inside a partially flooded cave in northern Thailand late Monday, more than a week (9 days) after they disappeared and touched off a desperate search that drew international help and captivated the nation.

Chiang Rai provincial Gov. Narongsak Osatanakorn said the 13 were in the process of being rescued, but he cautioned that they were not out of danger yet.

"We found them safe. But the operation isn't over," he said in comments broadcast nationwide, referring to the complicated process of extricating them....

Wow, I'd pretty much given up. I hope there's no tragedy now that they've come so close.
