Gun Legislation

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

I've been thinking of posting to the right-wing groups on reddit and various "conservative" forums: "Obama wants to stop people from using their guns for Russian Roulette!!!"

Between the far right's "Oh yeah, well let's see him come and stop me" attitude and their new-found love of Vladimir Putin, it would turn into a Monty Python skit.

Wasn't Roland in here not long ago arguing that the recently enacted gun-carrying law in Chicago had already had a measurable effect on shootings?

Gun violence mars holiday for Chicago

Aamer Madhani

@AamerISmad USA TODAY

CHICAGO At least 14 people were killed and dozens more wounded in Chicago over the holiday weekend, breaking a relative lull in a city that has been fighting a highprofile battle against the scourge of gun violence.

Chicago has been under scrutiny since 2012, when it was the only city in the nation to record more than 500 homicides. This year, Chicago had 172 homicides through June 30 — nine fewer than the same period last year and 82 fewer than during the first six months of 2012. While homicides are slightly down, shooting incidents have increased in Chicago during the first half of this year. Police reported 833 shooting incidents at the end of June 2013 compared with 880 shootings as of June 29. The 14 killed over the holiday weekend are among 82 shot in Chicago from late Thursday to early Monday morning.

“Going into a holiday weekend like this, we obviously had a plan — [the] plan included putting hundreds of more officers on the streets at the times that we needed them and in the places we needed them,” said Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has made reducing violence a top priority for his administration. Over the holiday weekend, Chicago police beefed up patrols, and McCarthy said police seized more than 100 illegal guns.

Most of this weekend’s incidents were on the city’s west and south sides, areas that suffer a disproportionate amount of Chicago’s gun violence.

The burst of violence came on the same weekend in which Chicago police officers were involved in eight shootings, including two that left civilians dead. In each incident, police said the civilians pointed guns at the officers. In three of the incidents, police officers were shot at by suspects, McCarthy said.

Of course lead ammunition is deadly....over 90% of gunshots deaths are the result of lead poisoning.

That just means the bullets are twice as effective.

Maybe legislation isn't necessary if they keep self-culling... http://www.examiner.com/article/man-sho ... picks=true

Perhaps it will turn out to be that he should have shot himself instead. Twice, or with both barrels. Drunk people can be crazy, but usually things can be settled short of lethal action. But it was Detroit.

True that, but I can't help but wondering what influence the Zimmerman case might have had on the jury; did they fear delivering an innocent verdict and the potential repurcussions that would result? Or was the Zimmerman case not even a consideration? I'm not defending the guy, but it just seems to me to be a potential influence on the thinking of the jury.

I don't know if the "Zimmerman effect" made a difference, but the circumstances are certainly different. In this case, the guy may have been frightened by somebody banging on his door at night, but he had a lot of options, plus a good bit of safety. He could tell the person was knocking, not trying to kick in the door. He (probably) could tell she was alone and female. He could have called 911, even if he got his shotgun in case she broke through. He could have stuck the shotgun out the door into her face and asked WTF do you want. There were lots of options other than shooting her. There were no allegations that she attacked him in any way - other than in his fertile imagination.

Even if you accept that argument, he gets no sympathy from me. Living in a high-crime or dangerous area (such as I lived close to in Miami) is a good incentive to get good firearms and home/self-defense training. It's no excuse for shooting a non-threatening person.

Too bad Roland Deschain isn't here to tell us how the far less training civilians get is sufficient.
Yeah, but he'd also be sure to remind us that none of the current or proposed gun laws would have stopped that incident because as a deputy, he'd have had his firearm anyway and, (implied but surely not spoken) would have still been as negligent.

I'll start. The girl deserved anything that happened to her because she snuck out. Don't wanna get shot? Don't do things burglars do. If he hadn't wussed out he wouldn't have to pay for car repairs, too.

How's that? ;)
Well, that's certainly a good point. But even if she had just got up to go to the bathroom, a guy has a right to stand his ground when he fears for his life. Somebody walking around in the middle of the night can be really scary. Look at Pisorious - he wuz definitely skeered, and did his best to protect his home against that intruder using his bathroom. I mean, if somebody's in your house and holding something in their hand - hell, you don't know if it's a gun or a cellphone. Especially if it's female. Hell, have you seen how much a hair dryer looks like a gun? Lots of people have been killed because they didn't shoot first.

Yeah, but IRL the other side is as smart as me and has a quick logical mind. Coming up with what the loons might do is much more difficult. I am regularly amazed at what they say, and probably wouldn't think up some of that stuff in my most Onionish frame of mind.

Where's ol' Roland when you need him to tell us about how "the good guys" don't contribute to the gun violence problem.
