One Last Time: An Evening with Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga, that's featured at the end of the 60 Minutes report will be shown on CBS Sun 11/28 8pm - 9pm ET.

... A firm believer in the Civil Rights Movement, Bennett participated in the 1965 Selma to Montgomery marches. Years later he would continue this commitment by refusing to perform in apartheid South Africa.

... Bennett broke the individual record for the longest span of top-10 albums on the Billboard 200 chart for any living artist; his first top-10 record was I Left My Heart in San Francisco in 1962. Bennett also broke the Guinness World Record for the oldest person to release an album of new material, at the age of 95 years and 60 days.

Bennet's final live performances were on August 3 and 5, 2021, when he presented a pair of shows with Lady Gaga at Radio City Music Hall. A television special, One Last Time: An Evening with Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga debuted on November 28, 2021, at CBS, which contained select performances from the two shows. Bennett's last televised performance was also with Gaga on December 16, 2021, in MTV Unplugged. The special was filmed the previous July in front of an intimate studio audience in New York City, and included duets from Love for Sale....

On February 12, 1952, Bennett married Ohio art student and jazz fan Patricia Beech, whom he had met the previous year after a nightclub performance in Cleveland. Two thousand female fans dressed in black gathered outside the ceremony at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan, New York, in mock mourning....

... Bennett was sent into the Battle of the Bulge to reinforce Allied troops, according to Military.com. He wrote in his autobiography "The Good Life" that the front was "a front-row seat in hell."

His final mission was liberating a concentration camp in Germany.

"I'll never forget the desperate faces and empty stares of the prisoners as they wandered aimlessly around the campgrounds," Bennett wrote in his autobiography.

After the war, Bennett faced discipline for spending time with a Black friend while soldiers were still segregated.

Bennett, who was at the time a corporal in the US's Special Services, invited his Black friend, Frank Smith, to dinner during the post-war occupation period, according to PBS News.

In response, a senior officer in the US Army cut off Bennett's corporal stripes and threw them on the floor, the report said, citing Bennett's autobiography.

The officer also spat on Bennett's stripes and he was demoted from corporal to private.

Reflecting on his time in the US armed forces, Bennett wrote that the "unbelievable" incident demonstrated "the degree of prejudice that was so widespread in the army during World War II."

"Black Americans have fought in all of America's wars, yet they have seldom been given credit for their contribution, and segregation and discrimination in civilian life and in the armed forces has been a sad fact of life," he wrote.

When Bennett returned to the US in 1946, he devoted the rest of his life and career to pacifism and the arts.

"Anybody who thinks that war is romantic obviously hasn't gone through one," Bennett wrote in his autobiography.

On July 23, 2020, Naomi uploaded a video where she was covering The Sound of Silence - Simon & Garfunkel. Unbeknownst to her, a young deer heard her harp, started wagging its tail, and began advancing slowly towards her. However, Naomi didn't notice it until it ran away. It became her most viewed video and has led to jokes that Naomi is a "Disney Princess" as she attracts animals with her music.

A vocal minority sets the agenda
Online narratives distort real life more often than you might realize.

Research consistently shows that a small minority of people who have social media accounts post the vast majority of content.

In what’s termed the “90-9-1 rule,” 90% of users on these websites only “lurk” or read content, 9% of the users reply or re-post with occasional new contributions, and only 1% of the users frequently create new content.

Pioneered by Jakob Neilson, the 90-9-1 rule is one of many theories within internet studies that describe participation rates, and different scholars find support for different variations of this rule. Reddit, for example, has over 1 billion monthly active users, but according to a 2017 conference paper, an overwhelming majority of Reddit users are lurkers. X, the website and app formerly known as Twitter, had around 350 million users as of 2023; however, research from 2019 found that 75% of its users were lurkers.

In other words, most of the discussions happening on websites like Reddit and Twitter come from a vocal minority of users – whose posts are then curated and boosted by algorithms.

Nonetheless, in the past decade, the news media have increasingly constructed narratives about collective reality based on what happens in these websites.

Of course, toxic online behavior exists in all online communities. But it represents the words of a smaller minority of users within the already small minority of people who post content online. Media narratives that emphasize certain groups as toxic based on online behavior – whether they are describing fandom or politics – fall into the trap of confusing the internet with real life.
