Yeah, the more chaos they stir up, the less actually gets done. Ordinarily that wouldn't be good, but considering what sort of stuff they'd like to get done, I'd say it's a good thing. Go stubborn ignorant irascible curmudgeonly rabble rousers!

I could be mistaken, but I'm guessing there aren't many meaningful bills that the repugs can get 100% on without any defections. And if you figure that even with replacements, they can only afford 4 or so defections. Fair chance they'll involuntarily be their own "guardrails."

Will Dolt .45 and the sycophants get shamed? Fingers crossed... Johnson faces a tight vote Friday with a narrow House majority and at least one Republican lawmaker, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.), vowing to vote against him. He can only afford to lose one GOP vote, assuming all members are present and voting for a candidate.
However, several other Republicans, such as Reps. Chip Roy (R-Texas), Victoria Spartz (R-Ind.), Andy Harris (R-Md.) and Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.), still appear to be on the fence.

The fact he was elected on the first vote, although extended, suggested the GOP may be able to handle the slim majority.

The bar is pretty low.

It's the loonies of the loons who oppose him so strongly - largely for trying to do his job. Those same loons aren't going to go along with much - at least not much that a majority will pass. When the very act of negotiating with/cooperating with members of the other party is grounds for excommunication, you've got a long rocky hill to get anything much done.Supsalemgr wrote: ↑Sat Jan 04, 2025 6:23 amThe fact he was elected on the first vote, although extended, suggested the GOP may be able to handle the slim majority.

Much of any success will depend upon Trump and his influence. No question his involvement was instrumental in Johnson being elected to Speaker.O Really wrote: ↑Sat Jan 04, 2025 12:11 pmIt's the loonies of the loons who oppose him so strongly - largely for trying to do his job. Sure Trump twisted arms, but also likely even the densest congresscritter realized that stalling the process and delaying certification of the election served no one well, except Dems. But still, they were rewarded for the obstruction with a list of blather so there's little incentive for them to be more cooperative in future votes. It's gonna be "you need my vote, and it's gonna cost you" every bill that comes up.Supsalemgr wrote: ↑Sat Jan 04, 2025 1:36 pmMuch of any success will depend upon Trump and his influence. You must admit sanity prevailed in this situation. Time will tell about future legislation. If Trump and Johnson remained aligned I expect a lot of legislation will come out of the House. We shall see what happens when it gets to the Senate. I don't know how Thune will do, but I am glad McConnell is no longer Leader.

I must admit no such thing. While I agree the correct political move was to keep Johnson, warts and all, I'd say it falls more along the line of a broken clock being right twice a day or even a blind squirrel finds a nut sometimes.Supsalemgr wrote: ↑Sat Jan 04, 2025 2:36 pmYou must admit sanity prevailed in this situation. Re: SINO Johnson the johnson
As you insinuated, this vote is to allow the House to certify trump on January 6 more than anything. The thirty odd members that detest Johnson for reaching across the aisle to keep the government open twice haven't changed their spots. They've showed no inclination to compromise on spending in the past no matter who they hurt. I see no reason to think that will change, even with trump who they have bucked previously on budget matters.O Really wrote: ↑Sat Jan 04, 2025 3:16 pmI must admit no such thing. Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) kept his gavel amid a threat from the right flank of the House GOP, but managing the House GOP is not going to get any easier from here.
The dramatic Friday Speaker vote on the House floor – in which three Republicans nearly kept Johnson from the gavel before two of them reversed course to support him – showcased the challenges ahead as Johnson aims to usher President-elect Trump’s ambitious legislative agenda through a razor-thin House majority.
Around a dozen Republicans had withheld support for Johnson ahead of the vote, demanding that Johnson make commitments on spending reductions and a more open process for crafting major legislation.

Yeah they still rewarded the rabble rousers for their efforts even knowing they'd probably come around. But no, nobody has changed their spots and they're not going to make life easy for Johnson and the rest. Pass the popcorn.
