O Really's link:
... According to Tiger Droppings, the legend goes like this: Big 12 opponents of Nebraska called their fans corn dogs because their mascot is the “cornhusker.” An Auburn fan heard this and then posted an extended rant on an online message board about how LSU fans are very sensitive about how they smell like corn dogs....
Tiger Droppings, an LSU fan site, does not have a search feature or one has to register to use it.

So, I searched: Tiger Droppings Nebraska corn dogs . Tons of links to discussion of the matter. Many repeat the Nebraska story, but there are other versions involving other SEC, Big12 and even Big 10 teams. Some have links to similar article's to O Really's, but no actual verifying source material that I can find.

Whether the origin was a plagiarized idea or not, it does have LSU fans worked up. Mission Accomplished.

Lots of folks say it's stupid because corn dogs smell and look great.
Others say it's stupid because corn is really a Prairie state thing.
Still others say it's stupid because of Louisiana's real cuisine, like this one:
So What Is the Deal with Corndogs Anyway?

… A little background. Corndogs are not, in any sense of the word, a typical Louisiana food. In fact, I do not know a single Louisianian who eats corn dogs regularly. I for one doubt I've had one since my age was in single digits. Yet, despite this, Auburn fans insist we smell of corndogs….

It's like if LSU fans decided to start calling Bama fans "the hippies" because of their progressive attitudes towards race relations and the environment.
:laughing-rolling:
If you go to an LSU game, you will see endless tailgates featuring a variety of gumbos, jambalayas, etouffes, soups, grilled meats, and seafood featuring local ingredients prepared in distinctly local ways. And in response to this variegated culinary attack on the senses, the Auburn fans, bizarrely, decided we smelled of corndogs. It's strangely brilliant in how it cuts right at our pride in local culinary achievement. Despite our famous skill in combining ingredients and adding heat, it is all a waste because we may as well have just had corndogs for all of its effect on outsiders. I don't know if they meant it to be this complicated of a form of humor, but that's how I see it.

Yeah, it's strange. Derogotory names created by rivals usually are some reasonable derivative of something real-ish. Like "Dook" or billy.p's "Bammer." But to create a whole odor concept that has nothing to do with actual food eaten, cultural features, or school mascot or nickname is unusual as well as creative. Of course, these are the people who are most creative with their own mascot and nicknames.

And then there's LSU itself, thinking up a word like "geaux" that means nothing in English or French. If they want to tie into the French history of Louisiana, what's wrong with "Allons"? "Allons Tigers" would fit in very well in a place that is full of English/French mangling.

"Geaux" is readily understandable whereas "Allons" requires a knowledge base and/or initiative not often found in the SEC :D .

Thank you, we never said that they eat corn dogs.

Final Yahoo! spreads.

Go:

(20)Iowa -9.5 -10.5 @Northwestern.
Vegas dropped the spread to just 8, ut-oh.
(13)Wisconsin +14 @(3)Ohio St. Big game for both.
(21)Appalachian St -25.5 -26.5 @South Alabama. Jan. 13 in New Orleans :D .
Vegas increased the spread to 27.5. 26.5 is a good deal.
@(23)Iowa St -8.5 -10.5 Oklahoma St.
@Michigan St +5.5 +6.5 (6)Penn St. Ugh, dislike them both and the spread seems too small, but I really want PSU out of the top 10. Thoughts?
Thanks for the help ;) .Vegas dropped the spread to 4.5. 6.5 is a good deal. My biggest oddball pick of the day. 16 of 19 took PSU -6.5.
@(17)Minnesota (7-0) -15 -17 Maryland (3-4). Yeah, I'm a traitor. Go Gophers, Jan. 13 in New Orleans.
Vegas dropped the spread to 16, ut-oh.
@(2)LSU -12 -10.5 (9)Auburn. Ouch, big spread = no respect. This could end your playoff hopes. Could also move LSU to #1. Like Clemson, Bama has not played a ranked team.
7 players took Auburn +10.5.
(15)Texas -1.5 -1 @TCU. Austin > god. Practically straight up.
Arkansas +33 +32 @(1)Alabama. Since Bama wins regardless, thoughts on the bet? Darn, I may need that point.
14 players took Alabama -32.
Boston Coll (4-3) +33.5 @(4)Clemson. Won't do a thing for the weak Clemson resume.
Vegas increased the spread to 35, ut-oh. 14 players took Clemson -33.5.
(8)Notre Dame +2.5 +1 @(19)Michigan. Hmmm, higher rank = underdog. Very uncertain about this one. Help me out? Practically straight up.
@UCLA +3 +3.5 (24)Arizona St.
California +18 +21.5 @(12)Utah. Homies vs Mormons.
@(11)Oregon -13.5 -14 Washington St (4-3). Won't help the Ducks' resume much.
Maybe some top tens will flop. LSU or Auburn is certain.

I forgot to check Vegas before the games started. Luckily, it would not have changed any of my marginal choices.

3 games between ranked teams, seems to be about the norm. 6 4 games with single digit spreads, cool could be worse is worse.

New Rule 1: when the QB in the pocket throws a pass at his receivers feet behind the line, it is intentional grounding

New Rule 2: when the QB outside the pocket throws the ball past the line of scrimmage in the area of his reciever, it is intentional grounding

Who knew.

We came close, but our true freshman QB played like a true freshman. 5 or 6 missed passes to wide open receivers, 2 of them were to receivers standing still. He just never really got in the game.

That wasn't pessimism, that was realism that we havea freshman QB.

It shows, as you say.

Here's some optimism ung

There will be no seismic activity in Baton Rouge on Saturday.

They were loud, but no seism. Just a sigh of relief.

WDE all orange and blue sky at sundown

For the defense, not quite for the team
Close. Auburn did beat the spread. LSU and OH St should be #1 and 2 or #2 and 1.

I'm 4-5 and out of the money with 6 games left to play. :(

3 point favorite North Carolina beat Duke 20-17. North Carolina leads the Coastal! Bring on the Clemson kitties for the Championship!

Hey, it’s the ACC.

Lost:
(5)Oklahoma
(8)Notre Dame
(9)Auburn
(13)Wisconsin
(15)Texas
(23)Iowa St
(24)Arizona St

Wow, that's a rankings-busting day.

Remaining undefeated, rankings to change later today:
1 Alabama (8-0) Should fall, imo.
2 LSU (8-0) Should rise, imo.
3 Ohio State (8-0) Should rise, imo.
4 Clemson (8-0) Should fall, imo.
6 Penn State (8-0) Will rise.
14 Baylor (7-0) Will rise.
16 SMU (8-0) Will rise.
17 Minnesota (8-0) Will rise. Playoffs!
21 Appalachian State (7-0) Will rise. Playoffs!

(9)Auburn may not drop too much having played a close game and with (5)Oklahoma and (8)Notre Dame both losing.
These 3 teams losing is the break that (11)Oregon has been looking for. But no, Wazoo wins with 1:00 left, arrggghhh.
The number of teams that can jump past Auburn has been thinned, too.
But wait, Oregon marches down the field in no time, FG for the win! Funny that it will likely now pass the one team to have beaten it, Auburn. Playoffs still possible?

8-0 PSU, ugh, should knock AL or Clemson out of a playoff spot, having beaten ranked Iowa and Michigan. Then come some 1 loss teams that can make the case that they’ve played the real competition that AL and Clemson have not, but I won’t hold by breath for any of this.

FL - GA on 11/2 will be THE big game.
Undefeateds LSU - AL and PSU - MN on 11/9 (all 4 have byes next week) will be THE big games.
Lotsa chances for Auburn and Oregon to move up.

I really sucked down the stretch, going 1-5 vs the spread, only winning with UCLA while Oregon was only a straight up win. I finish tied for last at 5-10 while the winners are 11-4.

Remaining undefeated, rankings to change later today:
1 Alabama (8-0) Should fall, imo. Did, not far enough.
2 LSU (8-0) Should rise, imo. Check.
3 Ohio State (8-0) Should rise, imo. Robbed.
4 Clemson (8-0) Should fall, imo. Didn't, poser.
6 Penn State (8-0) Will rise. Did, not far enough, and I don't even like PSU.
14 Baylor (7-0) Will rise. Check.
16 SMU (8-0) Will rise. Check.
17 Minnesota (8-0) Will rise. Playoffs! Check, 4 slots!
21 Appalachian State (7-0) Will rise. Playoffs! Check, barely.
AP Rankings

1 LSU (8-0)
2 Alabama (8-0)
3 Ohio State (8-0)
4 Clemson (8-0)
5 Penn State (8-0)
6 Florida (7-1) Beat #8 Georgia.
7 Oregon (7-1) Nice, up from #11, gettin' close.
8 Georgia (6-1) Ugh.
9 Utah (7-1) Ugh.
10 Oklahoma (7-1) Down from #5, nice.
11 Auburn (6-2) Down from #9, coulda been worse, highest ranked 2-loss team.
12 Baylor (7-0) Ugh.
13 Minnesota (8-0) All the way!
14 Michigan (6-2)
15 SMU (8-0)
16 Notre Dame (5-2) All the way down from #8 after getting pasted by Michigan, as it should be.
17 Cincinnati (6-1)
18 Wisconsin (6-2) Down from #13, sigh.
19 Iowa (6-2)
20 Appalachian State (7-0) 2019-20 Champs!
21 Boise State (6-1)
22 Kansas State (5-2)
23 Wake Forest (6-1)
24 Memphis (7-1)
25 San Diego State (7-1)
Former #15 Texas got knocked all the way to #26, the shame of losing to TCU.
Washington is #29 :( .
Texas A&M, Alabama and Clemson's best win, is #30.

I'm confused. North Carolina has lost conference games to Wake Forest, Clemson and Virginia Tech, yet NBC, ESPN, USA Today AND the NCAA all say that it's 3-2 in the conference :wtf: . I think that I was wrong earlier, Virginia - UNC's 11/2 opponent - still leads the ACC Coastal.

I dropped all the way to a tie for 11th out of 19 in the season tally for the pool, 12 points from the lead, a steady slide for a few weeks now :( .

Ah, thanks, if I'd known that such a thing was possible I would have googled it.
This one doesn’t count in the ACC standings. The teams had agreed in 2015 to play this year and in 2021 instead of waiting until 2022 for their next ACC matchup amid the 14-team league’s scheduling rotation for teams in opposite divisions.
Okay, Virginia and North Carolina are both 3-2 in the conference. Virginia is listed first, either some intra-conference tiebreaker or just because it's 5-3 overall compared to North Carolina's 4-4. Whatever, settled Sat night when they play each other.

Virginia Tech and Pittsburgh are 2-2, could be players later.

Go:

(14)Michigan -17.5 @Maryland. Yeah, I might be a traitor again. What do y'all think?
@(23)Wake Forest Off (0) N.C. State. Vegas says Wake Forest -8.5.
@Kansas +6.5 (22)Kansas St. Knock it out of the rankings. Opinions?
@(6)Florida +3.5 (8)Georgia. Hmmm, Florida at home and it's higher ranked, yet it's the underdog  . Who do y'all hate more?
@(4)Clemson Off (0) Wofford. Ooooh, challenging game for a Playoffs poser  .
@Washington +2 (9)Utah. Hmmm, spread seems low, but I'll go with Stoners > Mormons.
Mississippi +18.5 @(11)Auburn. Might let any late Vegas wiggle decide this one for me.
@(24)Memphis -3 (15)SMU. Blues > Shrub.
(7)Oregon -4.5 @USC. I can't get over Oregon being #7  . The Florida - Georgia winner will stay higher ranked and no other higher ranked teams are playing a real game. So, it will stay #7 unless it loses.

A lot of teams have a bye this week, only 12 games have at least one ranked team playing. Just 2 games between ranked teams, but there are a healthy 6 with a single digit spread.
