In 2016, he co-authored an amicus brief in the Supreme Court case of Whole Woman's Health v. Hellerstedt, arguing in favor of imposing medically unnecessary standards on health facilities that offer abortion. These regulations would have forced a majority of Texas abortion providers to shutter their doors....

NASA posts video of a Mars landing for all to see, or someone else makes a viral video. Network news shows report on it. And then their bots, assuming that anything on the network belongs to the network, do DMCA takedowns on the originals. Increasingly people who rely on their YouTube channels for income are having their channels shut down or ad revenue stopped by false takedowns. It's standard practice and there's no penalty. The big players are of course exempted.

Vice re-played the video on their own channel, so a takedown was predictable.

Most of Idaho is rightwing. Coeur d'Alene just got extra attention because of the Aryan Nations HQ north of there in the 1980s.

I would guess that the plutonium was probably dealt with responsibly, but the record keeping was just lax. However, it could have been actually lost, or stolen by pretty much anyone including neonazis.

So, when radioactive weapons-grade plutonium goes missing should we be concerned?

That plutonium is probably in a landfill, scrapyard or unsuspecting person's basement. A big concern, but a very local one. (And fortunately, scanning scrap metal for radioactivity before reuse is already a thing. There have already been plenty of scares, like the discovery of radioactive tissue boxes at Bed, Bath & Beyond stores in 2012.)

The first terrorist dirty bomb is going to be a psychological weapon. (Hence the name "terrorist.") It'll be effectively cleaned up and washed down, but people will avoid the area for generations regardless. Making it also an economic weapon as people refuse to live in or visit a downtown.

I expect it to be made from americium-241, the radioisotope used in smoke detectors. It's no problem to collect a huge number of them and extract the radioisotopes. The bomb will have little health effect, but the increase in radiation will be *detectable* and that's all that matters.

The increase in background radiation on the North American left coast was detectable after the reactor meltdowns in Japan. That increase was less than the normal increase in any rainfall - utterly insignificant - but the conspiritards still freaked.

The significant change outside the area will be attempts to track the use of smoke detectors, and a sudden demand for non-ionization detectors.

The "two million people" figure is for "a pound (454 grams) of plutonium". I just did the math to get "more than 4500 people" for a gram. You can withdraw your "Thanks".

The Wiki source, Bernard Cohen (physicist) in PLUTONIUM AND BOMBS, is actually very conservative in his risk estimates, so much so that he's still disputed by most experts.

True. But it doesn't change the fact that an RTG isn't going to be powderized, let alone magically evenly distributed.

A dirty bomb is a bigger risk; the terrorists could grind the plutonium* (just over 1 cubic inch) to powder *before* putting it into a bomb. But it's still not going to be magically evenly distributed, one grain per person.

* This would probably go very, very badly for the terrorists. As I understand it, the plutonium would burn as it converts to plutonium-oxide and ruin their whole day.
