Gun Legislation

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

"Mrs. O Really" says she was once confronted by a guy in the library waving his stiffie at her. She pointed and laughed. The offending part went limp and the guy took off. She followed him as far as the main desk and told the people working what he had done. Don't know if they ever caught him, but in any case it would take more than a wacko waving his wienie to get any "hysterical shrieking" out of her.

88-year-old Arlene Orms was at home alone in Miami, Fla. when an intruder kicked in her door.
Orms responded by retrieving a .25-caliber pistol and firing at the invader, prompting the criminal to flee.

Yep, there are self defense uses. However, that does not negate the fact that having a gun increases risk to self and family, not decreases it.

In Miami, she shoulda had better than a .25 caliber. Usually getting shot with that just makes them mad.

for every single instance of a gun saving someone, there are hundreds of people hurt.

kinda like saying the Paris concert goers would have been safe if they had been carrying (makes sense if you don't consider that overall gun deaths would soar and that more people would have probable been killed by gun nut fire than by the sky fairy nut fire.

Plus, even here in the US few gunhuggers argue that allowing guns in a venue with booze is a good idea.

History makes it clear that that's one of the least likely reasons for being shot by a concealed weapon holder. Unarmed people shot by concealed weapon holders are FAR more common.

The notable exception: When the gun pointed at the concealed weapon holder is their own. Triggered accidently by themselves, by a toddler reaching into a purse, by the dog stepping on it, etc.

Saw this today. Makes sense to me.

Some words to the wise. If you own a gun, you will appreciate this. If not, you should get one and learn how to use it:

A: Guns have only two enemies: rust and politicians.

B: Its always better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

C: Cops carry guns to protect themselves, not you.

D: Never let someone or something that threatens you get inside arms length.

E: Never say "I've got a gun." If you need to use deadly force, the first sound they hear should be the safety clicking off.
( most preferably the sound of a slug being chambered when you cock your gun)

F: The average response time of a 911 call is 23 minutes, the response time of a .357 is 1400 feet per second.

G: The most important rule in a gunfight is: Always win - cheat if necessary.

H: Make your attacker advance through a wall of bullets . . .
You may get killed with your own gun, but he'll have to beat you to death with it, cause it'll be empty.
If you're in a gun fight:
1. If you're not shooting, you should be loading.
2. If you're not loading, you should be moving,
3. If you're not moving', you're dead.

J: In a life and death situation, do something . . . It may be wrong, but do something!

K: If you carry a gun, people call you a paranoid gun-hugger. Nonsense! If you have a gun, what do you have to be paranoid about?
(It's called being prepared)

L: You can say 'stop' or 'alto' or any other word, but a large bore muzzle pointed at someone's head is pretty much a universal language.

M: You cannot save the planet, or prevent mass shootings by owning a gun, but you may be able to save yourself and your family.

"Between October 1996 and September 1997, Australia responded to its own gun violence problem with a solution that was both straightforward and severe: It collected roughly 650,000 privately held guns. It was one of the largest mandatory gun buyback programs in recent history."
Now read the article and notice the dates.

What about them?
The average firearm suicide rate in Australia in the seven years after the bill declined by 57 percent compared with the seven years prior. The average firearm homicide rate went down by about 42 percent.
[...]
Non-gun suicides didn't increase to make up the decline.

Okaaay, the article was published on December 3, 2015, it refers to ongoing effects and specifically cites and links praise as recently as 2013:
... In the end, we won the battle to change gun laws because there was majority support across Australia for banning certain weapons. And today, there is a wide consensus that our 1996 reforms not only reduced the gun-related homicide rate, but also the suicide rate. The Australian Institute of Criminology found that gun-related murders and suicides fell sharply after 1996. The American Law and Economics Review found that our gun buyback scheme cut firearm suicides by 74 percent. In the 18 years before the 1996 reforms, Australia suffered 13 gun massacres — each with more than four victims — causing a total of 102 deaths. There has not been a single massacre in that category since 1996.

Few Australians would deny that their country is safer today as a consequence of gun control.
