I mostly bite my tongue here because, despite holding my job for 6+ years and being one of the best at it, I can be canned for no reason at all with 2 weeks notice. My only loyalty is to my patients and other hard-working staff, I don't give 2 figs for my employer.
Here's my personal philosophy when it comes to work.
I sign a contract with my employer. They pay me X amount of money to get the job done. I do the job, and I do the best job I can. I'm on salary so any time I spend working over 40 hours is money out of my pocket, so I strive to get my tasks done within 40 hours every week because any time extra spent working means I'm getting paid less. If I can't get it done in the allotted time, I work over 40 hours and do what needs to be done. I also take every bit of my vacation time every year. On the other hand, some my fellow co-workers who like to boast about how they barely ever take any vacation time, and how they still work even when on vacation. Not I.
Why is this my philosophy? Because I know my company wouldn't hesitate to drop any of us if things went south. I'm a resource for them, and they're a resource for me. We've reached an agreement, I fulfill my part and they fulfill theirs. I produce X amount of value for them, they produce X amount of value for me in terms of pay, vacation time, benefits, etc. Its mutually beneficial for both of us.
When I'm lying on my death bed about to kill over, will I be saying "Gee, if only I had spent more time at my workplace...", or "Gee, I wish I spent more time with friends and family and seeing the world and living"? (I think it was George Carlin that said something along those lines)
You aren't doing it wrong if no one knows what you are doing.
