For most people, a "pimp and ho" costume is as recognizable as a cowboy costume or a construction worker costume, or a police uniform, or an Indian costume, or whatever anybody else who sings "YMCA" would wear. It's a costume!

I once went to a costume party with the theme "Come as you aren't." People were supposed to wear a costume that was different from what they were really like. I went as an Idaho-type militia guy; one guy wore his regular business suit (that was clever, actually), but one of the funniest was a guy who wore regular clothes with a piece of 2x4 hanging from his belt. He was (not) a "hung stud." The women's costumes were good, too. One gymnast-size woman wore a fat suit, and one came decked out in LBD glitter carrying a hiking pole and rope. (Not a "social climber")

I don't recall anybody not knowing the difference in what was a costume and what was not.
