I like this idea - we could write a series of books and sell them in various countries. Like "The Third Reich Lives: How Hitler Won the War" or maybe "Secrets of the Soviets: How Revisionism Still Lets Them Rule All of Eurasia." Maybe "North Korea: World Leaders in Democracy."

I just finished reading "We Bomb Pearl Harbor, They Never Fuck With Us Again," a spirited but romantically tragic account of how Imperial Japan defeated the United States beginning with the Battle of Midway and covering everyting in spectacular detail up to the point where Japan deployed their "divine wind of the Emperor" (or nuclear weapon) thus achieving glorius victory and honorable mention. It had me on the edge of my seat......

Tennessee to remove monument of KKK leader from state Capitol

The Tennessee Historical Commission on Tuesday voted 25-1 in favor of removing the bust of Ku Klux Klan leader and Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest from the state Capitol, per the Tennessean.

Why it matters: "This is the first time the state has contemplated the removal of a monument or statue in the capitol under the Tennessee Heritage Protection Act," the state's Lt. Gov. Randy McNally said in a statement sharing his concerns over the precedent, per News Channel 3....

What they're saying: The ACLU of Tennessee said in a statement Monday calling for the monument's removal that when visitors to the state Capitol are "greeted by a monument to slavery and white supremacy, it sends a clear message that our government endorses the oppression and inequality that the bust represents."

"Removing the bust of Nathan Bedford Forrest from the capitol would move us a step closer toward ensuring that the history we choose to celebrate and honor in our public spaces reflects respect and dignity for all Tennesseans," it added.

Driving the news: Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee (R) asked the State Capitol Commission last July to consider placing the bust of Forrest in the Tennessee State Museum "where it can be part of an exhibit that can be studied, learned from, and seen in full context."

Following the vote and an hours-long meeting on the issue, the statue will now be moved to the museum. Lee tweeted Tuesday that "this process should begin as soon as possible."

No word on whether it will be a position of honor and reverence, what "in full context" means, or whether visitors will be able to spit on the bust. There's no mention of the Fort Pillow massacre on the Tennessee State Museum website and citation of the KKK is nearly nonexistent.

... To be sure, what to some seems like a sudden quickening of the pace of historical change is disorienting. Since white supremacist Dylann Roof opened fire on a Bible study class at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, S.C., on June 17, 2015, killing nine Black parishioners, more than 140 Confederate monuments have been removed. But to hear the people who had lived for so long with the symbols and mythology that inspired Roof, that change seems long overdue.

“When we decide that these memorials don’t represent our values, changing them seems appropriate,” Sheehan-Dean (professor of Civil War history at the University of North Florida) said. “I think that these are local decisions, and they should be. It would be great if it entailed robust arguments about how to understand the past.”

Though Malcom, the 1993 graduate from the school, says she feels relieved that her old school now goes by its new name, Westside High School, she also knows there’s much more work to be done before the mindset that led people to want to honor Nathan Bedford Forrest is extinguished.

“It’s going to take a whole lot of time. To be honest, I don’t think racism is going to go anywhere,” Malcom said. “It seems like more people are getting madder about cancel culture. We have one side that wants to stay the same and another that wants to progress. It’s going to always be a tug of war.”
