So - unless somebody else in our little group spent their long Labor Day weekend hiking the Cumberland Gap and Daniel Boone National Forest, I'd guess that I've been to Harlan County more recently than Mr.B or most anybody else here. When you see where and how some of the people live, you can't possibly believe that they'd find any free or free-ish food to be be bad. But here's the thing - they know they're poor, but they are also protective of their culture. (nevermind that "culture" makes them fat, toothless, ignorant, and perpetually poor) So their objection to the healthier type food really isn't in how it tastes, but that it is an imposed change to their culture. It's not political per se, and it's not whether or not the brown bread is good. It's not even a resistance to change. It's a resistance to being changed.

Similar principle (or principal). They're used to getting salty pizza with chips and cookie side dishes. Why wouldn't they complain about healthier selections? Of course, complaining about school cafeteria food isn't new.
