The Hiking Thread

Generally an unmoderated forum for discussion of pretty much any topic. The focus however, is usually politics.

Mosquitos are nothing compared to the yellow flies in Florida.
Deer flies, too. And noseeums. Not to mention fire ants and palmetto bugs (really huge roaches). And Rick Scott.

There's Nothing in the Middle of the Road but Yellow Stripes and Dead Armadillos

- Jim Hightower

So, they're the things that aren't yellow stripes. ;)

Have you ever stepped on a palmetto bug and had a 3 inch parasite worm crawl out.

So, lose weight but without exercise, drink wine and don't get pregnant, or hang out with fat, sweaty, beer drinkers and pregnant women with type O blood so the mosquitos go for them instead of you.

Hanging with the attractant people works best. I rarely get bit unless I'm alone.

No point in spraying them - it just makes them stronger.

In Alabama people used a smudge pot - 5 to 20 gallon bucket or barrel filled with rags soaked in used motor oil - the lead was free - it would provide a heavy cloud of smoke for a lovely evening on the front porch while causing all thinking mosquitos to run away. Some people would toss in a few pieces of old tires as needed.

Likely responsible for many cancers and lung disease, but at least no one had to swat skiters.

Well, I guess I'm in store for a fine case of zika since I have O positive blood and have an affinity for beer. However, in my defense, I tend to stay away from pregnant women.

Camping at the eastern shore of Virginia/Maryland. Nice place not too shabby.

Today:
THE GORGE zipline

During your experience at The Gorge, you’ll ride the treetops on over a mile of cable covering 11 zip lines dropping 1100 feet in the breathtaking Green River Gorge, America's steepest and fastest. Additional elements are included in the tour such as a suspension bridge, 3 free fall rappels and a short hike down hill. From departure time our course takes 3-3.5 hours to complete.

The High Falls - Triple Falls loop from the Visitor's Center, plus Hooker Falls. I've been much more ambitious there, but it was late after ziplining and lunch at the Co-op.
